Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in March. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 2.9% compared to the same month in the previous year to 123,817 units. By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 63,090 units (51.0% market share), an increase of 0.9% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 2.0% increase to 50,006 units (40.4% share). Total global sales for the five companies declined by 1.6% y/y to 702,525 units. Notably, Kia achieved its highest first-quarter sales since it began vehicle production in 1962.
For the period January through March 2024, Hyundai’s global sales volume fell by 0.7% y/y to 999,626 units, while Kia’s rose by 1.5% to 771,463 units. GM Korea’s sales declined by 10.1% to 112,517 units, KGM’s dropped by 11.3% to 26,009 units, and Renault Korea’s increased by 14.4% to 18,172 units.
