New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea down 2.8% in December, down 10.8% in 2021
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales. In December, new vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 2.8% compared to the same month in the previous year to 129,392 units, while 2021 full year vehicle sales in Korea decreased 10.8% year-over-year (y/y) to 1,433,605 units.
In 2021, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 726,838 units (50.7% market share), a decrease of 7.7% y/y, followed by Kia Motors with a 3.1% decrease to 535,016 units (37.3% share).
Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) came in third place with a 36.3% decline to 61,096 units (4.3% share). Ssangyong Motor sales decreased by 35.9% to 56,363 units (3.9% share), and fifth place GM Korea experienced a decline in sales of 34.6%, to 54,292 units (3.8% share).
Overseas sales in 2021, including exports, for four Korean OEMs increased, by 7.0% y/y at Hyundai, 9.1% at Kia, 254.3% at RSM and 44.1% at Ssangyong. GM Korea saw a sales decline of 36.0%. In total, overseas sales increased by 6.6% to 5,688,741 units.
For 2021, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 3.9% y/y to 3,890,981 units, Kia increased by 6.5% to 2,777,056 units, GM Korea decreased by 35.7% to 237,044 units, RSM increased 14.3% to 132,769 units, and Ssangyong decreased 21.3% to 84,496 units.
In terms of sales by model in 2021, the Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter is ranked first with 92,218 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s premium sedan Grandeur in second place with 89,084 units sold. Kia’s minivan Karnival was third in sales with 73,503 units sold.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea decrease 14.2% in November
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in November. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 14.2% compared to the same month in the previous year to 123,136 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 62,071 units (50.4% market share), a decrease of 11.4% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 8.9% decrease to 46,042 units (37.4% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 32.3% decline to 6,277 units (5.1% share). Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) sales dropped by 15.0% to 6,129 units (5.0% share), and fifth GM Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 60.1% to 2,617 units (2.1% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in November: sales decreased 18.4% at Hyundai, 14.3% at Kia, 34.9% at GM Korea and Ssangyong at 3.4% y/y. Sales increased by 1,254.4% at RSM. In total, overseas sales declined by 15.2% to 450,622 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in November were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales down 17.1% y/y to 312,602 units, Kia's sales at 222,232 units down 13.3%, GM Korea’s sales at 12,274 units dropped by 42.6% and Ssangyong’s sales decreased 26.0% to 8,778 units. RSM’s sales increased 121.4% to 17,872 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 573,758 units, a decrease of 15.0%.
For the period January through November 2021, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 5.4% y/y to 3,552,180 units, Kia increased by 7.6% to 2,570,588 units, GM Korea decreased by 29.9% to 225,513 units and Ssangyong decreased 21.8% to 75,711 units.
In terms of sales by model in November, Kia’s compact SUV Sportage is ranked first with 7,540 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter in second place with 7,288 units sold and Hyundai’s premium sedan Grandeur was third in sales with 6,918 units.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in October. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 21.5% compared to the same month in the previous year to 106,424 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 57,813 units (54.3% market share), a decrease of 12.0% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 21.2% decrease to 37,837 units (35.6% share). Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) came in third place with a 30.0% decline to 5,002 units (4.7% share). Ssangyong Motor sales dropped by 56.9% to 3,279 units (3.1% share), and fifth GM Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 64.7% to 2,493 units (2.3% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in October: sales decreased 22.5% at Hyundai, 18.4% at Kia, 82.0% at GM Korea and Ssangyong at 42.0% y/y. Sales increased by 1,590.1% at RSM. In total, overseas sales declined by 22.4% to 441,768 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in October were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales down 20.7% y/y to 307,039 units, Kia's sales at 217,872 units down 18.9%, GM Korea’s sales at 6,875 units dropped by 78.1% and Ssangyong’s sales decreased 53.1% to 4,779 units. RSM’s sales increased 54.3% to 11,627 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 548,192 units, a decrease of 22.2%.
For the period January through October 2021, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 8.1% y/y to 3,235,048 units, Kia increased by 10.0% to 2,346,392 units, GM Korea decreased by 29.7% to 211,239 units and Ssangyong decreased 21.2% to 66,933 units.
In terms of sales by model in October, Hyundai’s compact sedan Avante is ranked first with 9,448 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s midsize sedan Sonata in second place with 6,136 units sold and Genesis’s full-size sedan G80 was third in sales with 6,119 units.

By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 43,857 units (47.8% market share), a decrease of 34.6% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 30.1% decrease to 35,801 units (39.0% share). Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) came in third place with a 25.8% decline to 4,401 units (4.8% share). GM Korea sales dropped by 36.5% to 3,872 units (4.2% share), and fifth Ssangyong Motor experienced a decrease in sales of 53.0% to 3,859 units (4.2% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in September: sales decreased 19.4% at Hyundai, 10.1% at Kia, 71.3% at GM Korea. Sales increased by 612.5% at RSM and 28.6% y/y at Ssangyong. In total, overseas sales declined by 17.3% to 447,446 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in September were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales down 22.3% y/y to 281,196 units, Kia's sales at 223,593 units down 14.1%, GM Korea’s sales at 13,750 units dropped by 66.1% and Ssangyong’s sales decreased 39.5% to 5,950 units. RSM’s sales increased 99.7% to 7,386 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 539,236 units, a decrease of 20.7%.
For the period January through September 2021, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 12.3% y/y to 2,925,859 units, Kia increased by 14.1% to 2,127,756 units and Ssangyong decreased 16.9% to 62,154 units.
In terms of sales by model in September, Hyundai’s compact sedan Avante is ranked first with 5,217 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s midsize sedan Sonata in second place with 5,003 units sold and Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter was third in sales with 4,916 units.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea decrease 5.0% in August
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in August. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 5.0% compared to the same month in the previous year to 106,247 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 51,034 units (48.0% market share), a decrease of 6.5% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 6.6% increase to 41,003 units (38.6% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 28.4% decline to 4,861 units (4.6% share). GM Korea sales dropped by 19.5% to 4,745 units (4.5% share), and fifth Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) experienced a decrease in sales of 24.6% to 4,604 units (4.3% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in August: sales decreased 7.8% at Hyundai, 1.4% at Kia, 45.7% at GM Korea. Sales increased by 189.4% at RSM and 132.7% y/y at Ssangyong. In total, overseas sales declined by 6.1% to 438,745 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in August were mixed as well, with Kia's global sales up 0.1% y/y to 217,204 units, RSM's sales at 8,846 units up 16.9%. Hyundai’s sales decreased 7.6% to 294,591 units, GM Korea’s sales declined 40.1% to 16,616 units and Ssangyong saw a sales decline of 3.6% to 7,735 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 544,992 units, a decrease of 5.9%.
For the period January through August 2021, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 17.6% y/y to 2,639,236 units, Kia increased by 18.7% to 1,904,031 units, GM Korea decreased by 16.5% to 190,614 units, RSM decreased 9.9% to 75,805 units, and Ssangyong decreased 13.4% to 56,204 units.
In terms of sales by model in August, Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter is ranked first with 7,424 units sold, followed by Kia’s compact SUV Sportage in second place with 6,571 units sold. Kia’s minivan Carnival was third in sales with 5,611 units.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea decrease 14.5% in July
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in July. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 14.5% compared to the same month in the previous year to 123,512 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 59,856 units (48.5% market share), a decrease of 22.6% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 2.4% increase to 48,160 units (39.0% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 15.7% decline to 5,652 units (4.6% share). Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) sales dropped by 21.3% to 4,958 units (4.0% share), and fifth GM Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 30.1% to 4,886 units (4.0% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in July: sales increased 4.2% at Hyundai, 10.4% at Kia, 131.7% at RSM, 218.0% at Ssangyong. Sales declined by 48.2% y/y at GM Korea. In total, overseas sales increased by 4.5% to 466,191 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in July were mixed as well, with Kia's global sales up 8.7% y/y to 241,399 units, RSM's sales at 11,033 units up 23.6%, Ssangyong’s sales increased 8.9% to 8,155 units. Hyundai’s sales decreased 2.4% to 309,901 units, and GM Korea saw a sales decline of 44.5% to 19,215 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 589,703 units, a decrease of 0.1%.
For the period January through July 2021, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 21.6% y/y to 2,341,094 units, Kia increased by 21.5% to 1,685,506 units, GM Korea decreased by 13.3% to 173,998 units, RSM decreased 12.6% to 66,959 units, and Ssangyong decreased 14.8% to 48,469 units.
In terms of sales by model in July, Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter is ranked first with 8,804 units sold, followed by Kia’s midsize SUV Sorento in second place with 6,339 units sold. Kia’s midsize sedan K8 was third in sales with 6,008 units.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in June. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 23.6% compared to the same month in the previous year to 134,761 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 68,407 units (50.8% market share), a decrease of 18.3% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 17.9% decrease to 49,280 units (36.6% share). GM Korea came in third place with a 38.6% decline to 5,740 units (4.3% share). Ssangyong Motor sales dropped by 41.3% to 5,724 units (4.2% share), and fifth place Renault (RSM) experienced a decrease in sales of 59.0% to 5,610 units (4.2% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, increased for five Korean OEMs in June: sales increased 26.5% at Hyundai, 35.4% at Kia, 27.1% at GM Korea, 1,345.3% at RSM and 539.1% at Ssangyong. In total, overseas sales increased by 32.5% to 522,786 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in June were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales up 14.4% y/y to 354,409 units, Kia's sales at 253,592 units up 20.2%, GM Korea’s sales increased 3.4% to 26,876 units. RSM sales decreased 0.7% to 14,166 units, and Ssangyong saw a sales decline of 16.5% to 8,504 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 657,547 units, an increase of 15.1%.
For the period January through June 2021, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 26.2% y/y to 2,028,974 units, Kia increased by 23.9% to 1,443,637 units, GM Korea decreased by 6.8% to 154,783 units, RSM decreased 17.3% to 55,926 units, and Ssangyong decreased 18.4% to 40,314 units.
In terms of sales by model in June, Hyundai’s premium sedan Grandeur is ranked first with 9,483 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter in second place with 9,208 units sold. Kia’s minivan Carnival was third in sales with 6,689 units.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in May. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 15.0% compared to the same month in the previous year to 124,145 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 62,056 units (50.0% market share), a decrease of 12.4% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 6.4% decrease to 47,901 units (38.6% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 34.6% decline to 4,956 units (4.0% share). Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) sales dropped by 56.2% to 4,635 units (3.7% share), and fifth place GM Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 23.3% to 4,597 units (3.7% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in May: sales increased 67.7% at Hyundai, 74.2% at Kia, 320.7% at RSM and 442.1% at Ssangyong. Sales declined by 37.0% y/y at GM Korea. In total, overseas sales increased by 65.6% to 480,564 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in May were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales up 42.7% y/y to 323,129 units, Kia's sales at 245,994 units up 49.2%, GM Korea’s sales decreased 33.7% to 16,428 units. RSM sales decreased 13.3% to 10,348 units, and Ssangyong saw a sales increase of 6.3% to 8,810 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 604,709 units, an increase of 38.6%.
For the period January through May 2021, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 28.9% y/y to 1,672,660 units, Kia increased by 24.7% to 1,189,271 units, GM Korea decreased by 8.7% to 127,907 units, RSM decreased 20.5% to 53,406 units, and Ssangyong decreased 18.9% to 31,810 units.
In terms of sales by model in May, Hyundai’s premium sedan Grandeur is ranked first with 7,802 units sold, followed by Kia’s minivan Carnival in second place with 7,219 units sold. Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter was third in sales with 6,930 units.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea decrease 6.6% in April
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in April. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 6.6% compared to the same month in the previous year to 135,601 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 70,219 units (51.8% market share), a decrease of 1.2% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 1.5% increase to 51,128 units (37.7% share). GM Korea came in third place with a 18.4% decline to 5,470 units (4.0% share). Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) sales dropped by 50.4% to 5,466 units (4.0% share), and fifth place Ssangyong Motor experienced a decrease in sales of 44.9% to 3,318 units (2.4% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in April: sales increased 185.1% at Hyundai, 120.9% at Kia, 87.2% at RSM and 33.5% at Ssangyong. Sales declined by 27.5% y/y at GM Korea. In total, overseas sales increased by 134.1% to 495,090 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in April were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales up 106.2% y/y to 345,777 units, Kia's sales at 249,734 units up 78.0%, GM Korea’s sales decreased 25.4% to 21,455 units. RSM sales decreased 28.6% to 9,344 units, and Ssangyong saw a sales decrease of 35.7% to 4,381 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 630,691 units, an increase of 76.9%.
For the period January through April 2021, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 25.7% y/y to 1,346,060 units, Kia increased by 19.1% to 939,724 units, GM Korea decreased by 3.3% to 111,343 units, RSM decreased 21.6% to 41,477 units, and Ssangyong decreased 25.7% to 23,000 units.
In terms of sales by model in April, the Hyundai’s premium sedan Grandeur is ranked first with 9,684 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter in second place with 9,182 units sold. Kia’s minivan Carnival was third in sales with 8,670 units.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea decrease 6.7% in March
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in March. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 6.7% compared to the same month in the previous year to 140,971 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 73,810 units (52.4% market share), an increase of 2.3% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with flat at 51,011 units (36.2% share). GM Korea came in third place with a 31.4% decline to 6,149 units (4.4% share). Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) sales dropped by 52.6% to 5,695 units (4.0% share), and fifth place Ssangyong Motor experienced a decrease in sales of 37.2% to 4,306 units (3.1% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in March: sales increased 28.6% at Hyundai, 11.0% at Kia, and 14.5% at Ssangyong. Sales declined by 18.9% y/y at GM Korea and 6.8% at RSM. In total, overseas sales increased by 18.1% to 531,672 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in March were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales up 22.4% y/y to 375,924 units, Kia's sales at 251,362 units up 8.6%, GM Korea’s sales decreased 21.8% to 29,633 units. RSM sales decreased 43.2% to 8,572 units, and Ssangyong saw a sales decrease of 23.5% to 7,152 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 672,643 units, an increase of 11.9%.
For the period January through March 2021, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 10.5% y/y to 997,882 units, Kia increased by 6.1% to 688,409 units, GM Korea increased by 4.0% to 90,024 units, RSM decreased 22.3% to 22,068 units, and Ssangyong decreased 22.9% to 18,619 units.
In terms of sales by model in March, the Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter is ranked first with 11,213 units sold, followed by Kia’s minivan Carnival in second place with 9,520 units sold. Hyundai premium sedan Grandeur was third in sales with 9,217 units sold.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in February. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 24.0% compared to the same month in the previous year to 101,356 units. The 2021 new year holiday in Korea was in February, while the 2020 new year holiday was in January. Sales in February 2021 reflected substantial year-over-year (y/y) growth due to a low sales base in February 2020 when sales declined heavily due to the coronavirus pandemic.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 52,102 units (51.4% market share), an increase of 32.6% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 31.0% increase to 37,583 units (37.1% share). GM Korea came in third place with a 2.4% increase to 5,098 units (5.0% share). Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) sales increased by 6.2% to 3,900 units (3.8% share), and fifth place Ssangyong Motor experienced a decrease in sales of 47.6%, to 2,673 units (2.6% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in February: sales increased 2.5% Hyundai, 2.9% at Kia, and 1.8% at RSM. Sales declined by 17.2% y/y at GM Korea and 94.3% at Ssangyong. In total, overseas sales increased by 1.2% to 443,467 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in February were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales up 6.7% y/y to 300,248 units, Kia's sales at 210,177 units up 7.0%, GM Korea’s sales decreased 13.7% to 24,265 units. Ssangyong sales decreased 60.9% to 2,789 units, and RSM saw a sales increase of 4.1% to 7,344 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 544,823 units, an increase of 4.8%.
For the period January through February 2021, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 4.3% y/y to 621,616 units, Kia increased by 4.5% to 435,910 units, GM Korea increased by 24.2% to 60,391 units, RSM increased 1.6% to 13,496 units, and Ssangyong decreased 22.5% to 11,467 units.
In terms of sales by model in February, the Hyundai premium sedan Grandeur is ranked first with 8,563 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter in second place with 7,626 units sold. Kia’s minivan Carnival was third in sales with 6,153 units sold.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in January. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 16.7% compared to the same month in the previous year to 116,270 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 59,501 units (51.2% market share), an increase of 25.0% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia with a 12.0% increase to 41,481 units (35.7% share). GM Korea came in third place with a 19.7% increase to 6,106 units (5.3% share). Ssangyong Motor sales increased by 1.6% to 5,648 units (4.9% share), and fifth place Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) experienced a decrease in sales of 17.9%, to 3,534 units (3.0% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in January: decline by 2.5% y/y at Hyundai. Sales increased 0.6% at Kia, 95.2% at GM Korea, 44.6% at Ssangyong and 35.6% at RSM. In total, overseas sales increased by 2.3% to 480,943 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in January were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales up 1.6% y/y to 319,959 units, Kia's sales at 226,298 units up 2.5%, GM Korea’s sales increased 76.4% to 36,126 units. Ssangyong sales increased 13.4% to 8,678 units, and RSM saw a sales decline of 1.3% to 6,152 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 597,213 units, an increase of 4.8%.
In terms of sales by model in January, the Hyundai premium sedan Grandeur is ranked first with 8,081 units sold, followed by Kia’s minivan Carnival in second place with 8,043 units sold. Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter was third in sales with 7,952 units sold.
