Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales. In December, new vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 12.9% compared to the same month in the previous year to 114,290 units, while 2023 full year vehicle sales in Korea increased 4.6% year-over-year (y/y) to 1,449,885 units.
In 2023, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 762,077 units (52.6% market share), a increase of 10.6% y/y, followed by Kia Motors with a 4.6% increase to 563,660 units (38.9% share).
KG Mobility (Ssangyong Motor) came in third place with a 7.7% decrease to 63,345 units (4.4% share). GM Korea sales increased by 4.1% to 38,755 units (2.7% share), and fifth place Renault Korea experienced a decline in sales of 58.1%, to 22,048 units (1.5% share).
Overseas sales in 2023, including exports, for four Korean OEMs increased, by 6.2% y/y at Hyundai, 6.7% at Kia, 88.6% at GM Korea and 17.2% at KG Mobility. Renault Korea saw a sales decline of 29.7%. In total, overseas sales increased by 8.9% to 6,535,601 units.
For 2023, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 6.9% y/y to 4,216,680 units, Kia increased by 6.3% to 3,080,043 units, GM Korea increased by 76.7% to 468,059 units, Renault Korea decreased 38.5% to 104,276 units, and KG Mobility increased 2.2% to 116,428 units.
In terms of sales by model in 2023, the Hyundai’s premium sedan Grandeur is ranked first with 113,062 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter in second place with 97,675 units sold. Kia’s midsize SUV Sorento was third in sales with 85,811 units sold.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea increase 4.1% in November
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in November. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 4.1% compared to the same month in the previous year to 132,021 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 72,058 units (54.6% market share), an increase of 18.3% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 3.6% decrease to 50,022 units (37.9% share). KG Mobility (former Ssangyong Motor) came in third place with a 21.4% decrease to 5,050 units (3.8% share). GM Korea sales increased by 46.6% to 3,016 units (2.3% share), and fifth Renault Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 66.2% to 1,875 units (1.4% share). Hyundai and GM Korea, which has a low base of comparison, grew, but other manufacturers saw declines due to consumer sentiment weakening due to high interest rates and production interruptions etc.
Overseas sales, including exports, increased 2.1% at Hyundai, 3.0% at Kia, 111.9% at GM Korea. Renault Korea and KG Mobility overseas sales decreased 77.5% and 59.4% respectively.
Global sales of five automakers in November were mixed, with Hyundai's global sales up 5.0% y/y to 365,576 units, Kia’s sales up 1.7% to 259,659 units and GM Korea’s sales increased 106.1% to 47,104 units. KG Mobility’s sales decreased 37.6% to 7,000 units and Renault Korea’s sales down 73.9% to 4,523 units.
For the period January through November 2023, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 7.6% y/y to 3,869,947 units, Kia increased by 7.6% to 2,866,993 units, GM Korea increased by 72.8% to 416,692 units, KG Mobility increased 4.7% to 109,820 units and Renault Korea decreased 39.1% to 97,469 units.
In terms of sales by model in November, Kia’s mid-size SUV Sorento was ranked first with 9,364 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter in second place with 9,255 units sold and Hyundai’s mid-size SUV Santa Fe was third in sales with 8,780 units.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in October. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 2.3% compared to the same month in the previous year to 117,012 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 64,328 units (55.0% market share), an increase of 5.9% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 0.4% increase to 42,960 units (36.7% share). GM Korea came in third place with a 9.8% increase to 4,469 units (3.8% share). KG Mobility (former Ssangyong Motor) sales declined by 51.5% to 3,804 units (3.3% share), and fifth Renault Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 66.6% to 1,451 units (1.2% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, increased 10.4% at Hyundai, 9.2% at Kia, 83.8% at GM Korea. Renault Korea and KG Mobility overseas sales decreased 71.2% and 51.0% respectively. KG Mobility’s vehicle production was affected by ongoing integration of assembly lines at the Pyeongtaek plant, which resulted in decreased sales.
Global sales of five automakers in October were mixed, with Hyundai's global sales up 9.6% y/y to 377,986 units, Kia’s sales up 7.6% to 257,099 units and GM Korea’s sales increased 72.6% to 46,269 units. KG Mobility’s sales decreased 51.3% to 6,421 units and Renault Korea’s sales down 70.2% to 5,745 units.
For the period January through October 2023, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 7.9% y/y to 3,505,024 units, Kia increased by 8.3% to 2,607,343 units, GM Korea increased by 69.3% to 369,588 units, KG Mobility increased 9.8% to 102,820 units and Renault Korea decreased 34.8% to 92,946 units.
In terms of sales by model in October, Kia’s mid-size SUV Sorento was ranked first with 8,777 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter in second place with 8,578 units sold and Hyundai’s mid-size SUV Santa Fe was third in sales with 8,331 units.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea decrease 6.2% in September
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in September. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 6.2% compared to the same month in the previous year to 106,386 units. Although the semiconductor shortage has eased, sales declined due to sluggish sales of electric vehicles (EVs), no new vehicle launches, and the long Chuseok holidays starting September 28 that include other holidays.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 53,911 units (50.7% market share), a decrease of 5.3% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 11.0% increase to 44,123 units (41.5% share). KG Mobility (former Ssangyong Motor) came in third place with a 47.0% decrease to 4,069 units (3.8% share). GM Korea’s sales declined by 34.4% to 2,632 units (2.5% share), and fifth Renault Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 67.3% to 1,651 units (1.6% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, increased 0.9% at Hyundai, 3.5% at Kia, 62.2% at GM Korea and 51.2% at KG Mobility. Renault Korea overseas sales decreased 46.3%.
Global sales of four of five automakers in September were mixed, with Hyundai's global sales down 0.1% y/y to 357,151 units, KG Mobility’s sales down 15.4% to 9,583 units and Renault Korea’s sales down 51.9% to 9,105 units. Kia’s sales increased 4.7% to 260,691 units and GM Korea’s sales increased 49.6% to 36,544 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 673,074 units, an increase of 1.8%.
For the period January through September 2023, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 7.7% y/y to 3,127,001 units, Kia increased by 8.3% to 2,350,020 units, GM Korea increased by 68.9% to 323,319 units, KG Mobility increased 19.8% to 96,399 units and Renault Korea decreased 29.3% to 87,201 units.
In terms of sales by model in September, Kia’s mid-size SUV Sorento was ranked first with 10,190 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s mid-size sedan Grandeur in second place with 8,159 units sold and Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter was third in sales with 5,781 units.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea increase 1.5% in August
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in August. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 1.5% compared to the same month in the previous year to 106,482 units. Vehicle delivery time has been shortened in accordance with the ease of the semiconductor shortage.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 55,555 units (52.2% market share), an increase of 12.9% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 2.4% increase to 42,225 units (39.7% share). GM Korea came in third place with a 8.2% decrease to 3,297 units (3.1% share). KG Mobility (former Ssangyong Motor) sales declined by 43.6% to 3,903 units (3.7% share), and fifth Renault Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 62.0% to 1,502 units (1.4% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, increased 1.5% at Hyundai, 5.8% at Kia, 94.4% at GM Korea and 84.4% at KG Mobility. Renault Korea overseas sales decreased 9.9%.
Global sales of four of five automakers in August were increased, with Hyundai's global sales up 3.2% y/y to 347,377 units, Kia's sales increased 5.3% to 255,107 units, GM Korea’s sales increased by 74.2% to 31,716 units, KG Mobility’s sales increased 1.4% to 10,823 units. Renault Korea’s sales decreased 27.6% to 8,414 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 653,437 units, an increase of 5.5%.
For the period January through August 2023, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 8.6% y/y to 2,765,554 units, Kia increased by 8.8% to 2,088,797 units, GM Korea increased by 72.0% to 286,727 units, KG Mobility increased 25.6% to 86,816 units and Renault Korea decreased 25.2% to 78,096 units.
In terms of sales by model in August, Hyundai’s mid-size sedan Grandeur was ranked first with 8,820 units sold, followed by Kia’s mid-size SUV Sorento in second place with 7,176 units sold and Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter was third in sales with 5,987 units.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea decrease 5.8% in July
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in July. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 5.8% compared to the same month in the previous year to 114,818 units. Automobile demand seems to have declined due to the termination of special consumption tax cut (from 5.0% to 3.5%) for passenger cars in the end of June and continued high interest rates.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 57,503 units (50.1% market share), an increase of 2.1% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 7.2% decrease to 47,424 units (41.3% share). GM Korea came in third place with a 0.6% increase to 4,143 units (3.6% share). KG Mobility (former Ssangyong Motor) sales declined by 33.7% to 4,043 units (3.5% share), and fifth Renault Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 59.9% to 1,705 units (1.5% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, increased 1.1% at Hyundai, 2.1% at Kia, 66.6% at GM Korea and 31.0% at KG Mobility. Renault Korea overseas sales decreased 74.8%.
Global sales of all five automakers in July were increased, with Hyundai's global sales up 1.2% y/y to 334,968 units, Kia's sales increased 0.2% to 259,932 units, GM Korea’s sales increased by 56.2% to 40,705 units, KG Mobility’s sales increased 0.9% to 10,848 units and Renault Korea’s sales decreased 71.0% to 4,835 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 651,288 units, an increase of 1.2%.
For the period January through July 2023, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 9.3% y/y to 2,416,508 units, Kia increased by 9.3% to 1,833,338 units, GM Korea increased by 71.4% to 255,011 units, KG Mobility increased 30.0% to 75,993 units and Renault Korea decreased 24.9% to 69,682 units.
In terms of sales by model in July, Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter was ranked first with 8,670 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s Grandeur in second place with 8,531 units sold and Kia’s compact SUV Sportage was third in sales with 6,625 units.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in June. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 10.5% compared to the same month in the previous year to 133,803 units. There was a demand surge prior to the termination of special consumption tax cut (from 5.0% to 3.5%) for passenger cars since July 2018.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 70,163 units (52.4% market share), an increase of 17.9% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 13.3% increase to 51,002 units (38.1% share). KG Mobility (company name changed from Ssangyong Motor on March 22) came in third place with a 25.6% increase to 5,758 units (4.3% share). GM Korea sales increased by 16.4% to 5,159 units (3.9% share), and fifth Renault Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 77.1% to 1,721 units (1.3% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, increased 7.7% at Hyundai, 5.8% at Kia, 100.7% at GM Korea, 24.0% at Renault Korea and 31.0% at KG Mobility.
Global sales of all five automakers in June were increased, with Hyundai's global sales up 9.5% y/y to 375,113 units, Kia's sales increased 7.1% to 277,633 units, GM Korea’s sales increased by 86.7% to 49,831 units, KG Mobility’s sales increased 27.9% to 10,243 units and Renault Korea’s sales decreased 39.2% to 7,297 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 720,117 units, an increase of 11.0%.
For the period January through June 2023, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 10.8% y/y to 2,081,462 units, Kia increased by 10.9% to 1,573,170 units, GM Korea increased by 74.6% to 214,306 units, KG Mobility increased 36.5% to 64,965 units and Renault Korea decreased 14.8% to 64,847 units.
In terms of sales by model in June, Hyundai’s Grandeur was ranked first with 11,528 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter in second place with 8,250 units sold and Kia’s midsize SUV Sorento was third in sales with 6,978 units.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in May. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 8.8% compared to the same month in the previous year to 130,300 units. Sales increased due to the easing of supply shortages of semiconductors and parts, and the contribution of new models launches including Hyundai Motor’s all-new Grandeur midsize sedan.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 68,680 units (52.7% market share), an increase of 8.4% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 10.3% increase to 50,275 units (38.6% share). KG Mobility (company name changed from Ssangyong Motor on March 22) came in third place with a 12.5% increase to 4,809 units (3.7% share). GM Korea sales jumped by 71.9% to 4,758 units (3.7% share), and fifth Renault Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 52.3% to 1,778 units (1.4% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, increased 7.7% at Hyundai, 15.2% at Kia, 172.7% at GM Korea, 175.1% at Renault Korea and 26.1% at KG Mobility.
Global sales of all five automakers in May were increased, with Hyundai's global sales up 7.8% y/y to 349,194 units, Kia's sales increased 14.3% to 268,047 units, GM Korea’s sales increased by 154.9% to 40,019 units, Renault Korea’s sales increased 76.4% to 15,154 units and KG Mobility’s sales increased 19.1% to 9,860 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 682,274 units, an increase of 15.4%.
For the period January through May 2023, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 11.0% y/y to 1,705,878 units, Kia increased by 11.7% to 1,296,241 units, GM Korea increased by 71.2% to 164,475 units, Renault Korea decreased 10.3% to 57,550 units and KG Mobility increased 38.3% to 54,902 units.
In terms of sales by model in May, Hyundai’s Grandeur was ranked first with 11,581 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter in second place with 8,061 units sold and Kia’s MPV Carnival was third in sales with 6,695 units.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea increase 7.4% in April
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in April. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 7.4% compared to the same month in the previous year to 128,360 units. Sales increased due to the easing of supply shortages of semiconductors and parts, and the contribution of new models launches including Hyundai Motor’s all-new Grandeur midsize sedan.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 66,660 units (51.9% market share), an increase of 12.2% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 1.8% decrease to 49,086 units (38.2% share). KG Mobility (company name changed from Ssangyong Motor on March 22) came in third place with a 15.4% increase to 5,583 units (4.3% share). GM Korea sales jumped by 77.2% to 5,230 units (4.1% share), and fifth Renault Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 22.6% to 1,801 units (1.4% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, increased 7.6% at Hyundai, 10.9% at Kia, 113.9% at GM Korea and 31.7% at KG Mobility. Renault Korea saw decline of 56.8%.
Global sales for the four automakers in April were increased, with Hyundai's global sales up 8.5% y/y to 336,212 units, Kia's sales increased 8.2% to 259,031 units, GM Korea’s sales increased by 108.4% to 41,233 units and KG Mobility’s sales increased 22.0% to 9,929 units. Renault Korea’s sales decreased 52.8% to 9,580 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 655,985 units, an increase of 9.8%.
For the period January through April 2023, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 12.0% y/y to 1,357,924 units, Kia increased by 11.1% to 1,027,775 units, GM Korea increased by 54.9% to 124,456 units, Renault Korea decreased 23.7% to 42,396 units and KG Mobility increased 43.4% to 45,042 units.
In terms of sales by model in April, Hyundai’s Grandeur was ranked first with 9,997 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter in second place with 9,068 units sold and Kia’s midsize SUV Sorento was third in sales with 6,835 units.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in March. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 26.8% compared to the same month in the previous year to 140,814 units. Sales increased due to the easing of supply shortages of semiconductors and parts, and the contribution of new models launches from the end of 2022 onward.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 74,529 units (52.9% market share), an increase of 40.9% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 17.8% increase to 53,046 units (37.7% share). Ssangyong Motor (company name changed to KG Mobility on March 22) came in third place with a 74.5% increase to 8,904 units (6.3% share). Renault Korea Motors sales decreased by 40.9% to 2,636 units (1.9% share), and fifth GM Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 52.9% to 1,699 units (1.2% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, increased 17.4% at Hyundai, 9.2% at Kia, 84.2% at GM Korea and 118.4% at Renault Korea and 36.7% at Ssangyong.
Global sales for the five automakers in March were increased, with Hyundai's global sales up 21.3% y/y to 381,885 units, Kia's sales increased 10.8% to 277,957 units, GM Korea’s sales increased by 64.3% to 40,781 units and Renault Korea’s sales increased 50.1% to 15,621 units and Ssangyong’s jumped 59.1% to 13,679 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 729,923 units, an increase of 19.8%.
For the period January through March 2023, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 13.0% y/y to 1,020,316 units, Kia increased by 12.0% to 767,700 units, GM Korea increased by 37.4% to 83,223 units, Renault Korea decreased 6.9% to 32,816 units and Ssangyong increased 50.8% to 35,113 units.
In terms of sales by model in March, Hyundai’s midsize sedan Grandeur was ranked first with 10,916 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter in second place with 10,282 units sold and Kia’s midsize SUV Sorento was third in sales with 6,890 units.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea increase 21.4% in February
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in February. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 21.4% compared to the same month in the previous year to 125,151 units. To stimulate sluggish consumer sentiment, companies are ramping up promotions with low interest rates and discounts. In addition, electric vehicle subsidies were revised, and EV sales increased.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 65,015 units (51.9% market share), an increase of 22.6% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 26.9% increase to 50,016 units (40.0% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 49.4% increase to 6,785 units (5.4% share). Renault Korea Motors sales decreased by 40.3% to 2,218 units (1.8% share), and fifth GM Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 54.3% to 1,117 units (0.9% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, increased 4.1% at Hyundai, 12.0% at Kia, 22.9% at GM Korea and 43.4% at Ssangyong. Renault Korea’s sales fell 36.7%.
Global sales for the five automakers in February were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales up 7.3% y/y to 327,718 units, Kia's sales increased 14.6% to 253,724 units, GM Korea’s sales increased by 14.6% to 26,191 units and Ssangyong’s jumped 47.3% to 10,431 units. Renault Korea’s sales decreased 37.9% to 7,150 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 625,214 units, an increase of 10.1%.
For the period January through February 2022, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 8.5% y/y to 637,841 units, Kia increased by 12.5% to 489,132 units, GM Korea increased by 18.7% to 42,442 units, Renault Korea decreased 30.8% to 17,195 units and Ssangyong increased 46.0% to 21,434 units.
In terms of sales by model in February, Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter was ranked first with 11,099 units sold, followed by mid-size sedan Grandeur in second place with 9,817 units sold and Kia’s light-duty truck Bongo was third in sales with 8,977 units.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in January. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 7.1% compared to the same month in the previous year to 100,448 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 51,503 units (51.3% market share), an increase of 11.5% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 4.8% increase to 38,678 units (38.5% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 47.4% increase to 7,130 units (7.1% share). Renault Korea Motors sales decreased by 52.7% to 2,116 units (2.1% share), and fifth GM Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 24.0% to 1,021 units (1.0% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, increased 7.8% at Hyundai, 9.9% at Kia, 31.7% at GM Korea and 40.1% at Ssangyong. Renault Korea decreased 10.3%.
Global sales for the five automakers in January were mixed as well, with Hyundai's sales up 8.4% y/y to 306,296 units, Kia's sales increased 9.0% to 232,134 units, GM Korea’s sales rose by 25.9% to 16,251 units and Ssangyong’s sales jumped 44.8% to 11,003 units. Renault Korea’s sales decreased 24.6% to 10,045 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 575,729 units, an increase of 8.7%.
In terms of sales by model in January, Hyundai’s mid-size sedan Grandeur was ranked first with 9,131 units sold, followed by Kia’s MPV Carnival in second place with 6,904 units sold and Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter was third in sales with 6,591 units.
