New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea down 8.1% in December, up 4.8% in 2020
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales. In December, new vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 8.1% compared to the same month in the previous year to 133,061 units, while 2020 full year vehicle sales in Korea increased 4.8% year-over-year (y/y) to 1,607,035 units. Korean market benefited from strong new model launches and the reduction in the individual consumption tax on cars (reduced by 70% from March to June, 30% from July to December) as one of the government’s measures to ease the impact of the COVID-19 crisis.
In 2020, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 787,854 units (49.0% market share), an increase of 6.2% y/y, followed by Kia Motors with a 6.2% increase to 552,400 units (34.4% share).
Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) came in third place with a 10.5% increase to 95,939 units (6.0% share). Ssangyong Motor sales decreased by 18.5% to 87,888 units (5.5% share), and fifth place GM Korea experienced an increase in sales of 8.5%, to 82,954 units (5.2% share).
Overseas sales in 2020, including exports, for five Korean OEMs declined by 19.8% y/y at Hyundai, 8.7% at Kia, 16.2% at GM Korea, 77.7% at RSM and 28.8% at Ssangyong. In total, overseas sales fell by 16.6% to 5,335,851 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in 2020 were declined as well, with Hyundai's global sales down 15.4% y/y to 3,743,514 units, Kia's sales down 5.9% at 2,607,337 units, GM Korea’s sales decreased 11.7% to 368,453 units. RSM sales decreased 34.5% to 116,166 units and Ssangyong saw a sales decline of 20.6% to 107,416 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 6,942,886 units, a decrease of 12.4%.
In terms of sales by model in 2020, the Hyundai premium sedan Grandeur is ranked first with 145,463 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter in second place with 95,194 units sold. Hyundai’s compact sedan Avante was third in sales with 87,731 units sold.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in November. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 5.3% compared to the same month in the previous year to 143,591 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 70,035 units (48.8% market share), an increase of 10.9% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 3.9% increase to 50,523 units (35.2% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 0.3% increase to 9,270 units (6.5% share). Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) sales decreased by 10.8% to 7,207 units (5.0% share), and fifth place GM Korea experienced an deincrease in sales of 10.5%, to 6,556 units (4.6% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in November: decline by 7.2% y/y at Hyundai, 53.7% at GM Korea and 88.7% at RSM. Sales increased 1.6% at Kia, and 71.0% at Ssangyong. In total, overseas sales fell by 7.6% to 530,449 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in November were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales down 4.3% y/y to 376,704 units, Kia's sales at 256,019 units up 2.0%, GM Korea’s sales decreased 45.6% to 21,384 units. Ssangyong sales increased 10.3% to 11,859 units, and RSM saw a sales decline of 48.7% to 8,074 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 674,040 units, a decrease of 5.1%.
For the period January through November 2020, Hyundai global sales volume decreased by 16.3% y/y to 3,369,055 units, Kia decreased by 6.1% to 2,388,885 units, GM Korea decreased by 15.0% to 321,736 units, RSM decreased 33.2% to 107,151 units, and Ssangyong decreased 19.3% to 96,763 units.
In terms of sales by model in November, the Hyundai premium sedan Grandeur is ranked first with 11,648 units sold, followed by Kia’s minivan Carnival in second place with 9,823 units sold. Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter was third in sales with 8,062 units sold.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in October. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 0.4% compared to the same month in the previous year to 135,495 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 65,669 units (48.5% market share), an increase of 1.2% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 1.8% increase to 48,009 units (35.4% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 5.4% decrease to 7,612 units (5.6% share). Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) sales decreased by 15.0% to 7,141 units (5.3% share), and fifth place GM Korea experienced an increase in sales of 10.5%, to 7,064 units (5.2% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in October: decline by 5.2% y/y at Hyundai and 93.9% at RSM. Sales increased 7.0% at Kia, 2.4% at GM Korea and 20.2% at Ssangyong. In total, overseas sales fell by 1.4% to 565,287 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in October were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales down 4.2% y/y to 385,947 units, Kia's sales at 265,714 units up 6.1%, GM Korea’s sales increased 4.1% to 31,391 units. Ssangyong sales are flat at 10,197 units, and RSM saw a sales decline of 49.2% to 7,533 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 700,782 units, a decrease of 1.1%.
For the period January through October 2020, Hyundai global sales volume decreased by 17.7% y/y to 2,991,101 units, Kia decreased by 7.2% to 2,129,851 units, GM Korea decreased by 11.5% to 300,352 units, RSM decreased 31.5% to 99,077 units, and Ssangyong decreased 23.8% to 84,966 units.
In terms of sales by model in October, the Kia’s minivan Carnival is ranked first with 12,093 units sold, followed by Hyundai premium sedan Grandeur in second place with 10,926 units sold. Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter was third in sales with 8,523 units sold.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea increase 23.3% in September
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in September. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 23.3% compared to the same month in the previous year to 138,530 units. Domestic sales in September were increased again year-over-year, after declining in August for the first time in the six months.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 67,080 units (48.4% market share), an increase of 33.8% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 21.9% increase to 51,211 units (37.0% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 13.4% increase to 8,208 units (5.9% share). GM Korea sales increased by 17.9% to 6,097 units (4.4% share), and fifth place Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) experienced a decline in sales of 24.1%, to 5,934 units (4.3% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in September: decline by 11.2% y/y at Hyundai, 46.7% at Ssangyong and 80.4% at RSM. Sales increased 7.7% at Kia and 112.3% at GM Korea. In total, overseas sales fell by 2.0% to 540,019 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in September were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales down 5.3% y/y to 360,762 units, Kia's sales at 260,023 units up 10.3%, GM Korea’s sales increased 89.5% to 40,544 units. Ssangyong sales decreased by 4.4% to 9,834 units, and RSM saw a sales decline of 51.4% to 7,386 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 678,549 units, an increase of 2.3%.
For the period January through September 2020, Hyundai global sales volume decreased by 19.4% y/y to 2,604,205 units, Kia decreased by 8.8% to 1,863,966 units, GM Korea decreased by 12.9% to 268,961 units, RSM decreased 29.5% to 91,544 units, and Ssangyong decreased 26.2% to 74,769 units.
In terms of sales by model in September, the Hyundai premium sedan Grandeur is ranked first with 11,590 units sold, followed by Kia’s minivan Carnival in second place with 10,130 units sold. Kia’s midsize SUV Sorento was third in sales with 9,151 units sold.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in August. New vehicle sales in South Korea declined by 5.6% compared to the same month in the previous year to 111,847 units.
There was a reduction of special consumption tax cut for passenger cars since July.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 54,590 units (48.8% market share), an increase of 3.2% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 11.3% decline to 38,463 units (34.4% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 15.5% decrease to 6,792 units (6.1% share). Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) sales decline by 21.5% to 6,104 units (5.5% share), and fifth place experienced GM Korea a decline in sales of 8.0%, to 5,898 units (5.3% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in August: decline by 17.1% y/y at Hyundai, 3.7% at Kia, 71.9% at RSM and 37.5% at Ssangyong. GM Korea’s sales increased 20.7%. In total, overseas sales fell by 11.7% to 461,432 units.
Global sales for the four automakers in August were diminished, with Hyundai's global sales down 14.2% y/y to 312,990 units, Kia's sales at 216,945 units decreased 5.2%, RSM sales decreased by 41.7% to 7,570 units, and Ssangyong saw a sales decline of 19.9% to 8,027 units. GM Korea’s sales increased 13.2% to 27,747 units. The overall overseas sales total of the five companies were 573,279 units, a decrease of 10.5%.
For the period January through August 2020, Hyundai global sales volume decreased by 21.4% y/y to 2,237,733 units, Kia decreased by 11.3% to 1,603,719 units, GM Korea decreased by 20.6% to 228,417 units, RSM decreased 26.6% to 84,158 units, and Ssangyong decreased 28.7% to 64,935 units.
In terms of sales by model in August, the Hyundai premium sedan Grandeur is ranked first with 10,235 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter in second place with 7,118 units sold. Hyundai’s midsize SUV Santa Fe was third in sales with 6,224 units sold.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea increase 10.1% in July
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in July. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 10.1% compared to the same month in the previous year to 144,422 units.
Robust sales of new models from Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors contributed, while there was a reduction of special consumption tax cut for passenger cars.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 77,381 units (53.6% market share), an increase of 28.4% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 0.1% decline to 47,050 units (32.6% share). GM Korea came in third place with a 3.5% increase to 6,988 units (4.8% share). Ssangyong Motor decline sales by 23.0% to 6,702 units (4.6% share), and fifth place experienced Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) an decline in sales of 24.2%, to 6,301 units (4.4% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in July: decline by 20.8% y/y at Hyundai, 3.7% at Kia, 65.3% at RSM and 62.1% at Ssangyong. GM Korea’s sales increased 10.1%. In total, overseas sales fell by 14.1% to 439,620 units.
Global sales for the four automakers in July were diminished, with Hyundai's global sales down 12.5% y/y to 313,097 units, Kia's sales at 219,901 units decreased 3.0%, RSM sales decreased by 43.8% to 8,923 units, and Ssangyong saw a sales decline of 30.6% to 7,489 units. GM Korea’s sales increased 8.7% to 34,632 units. The overall overseas sales total of the five companies were 584,042 units, a decrease of 9.2%.
For the period January through July 2020, Hyundai global sales volume decreased by 22.7% y/y to 1,920,444 units, Kia decreased by 12.3% to 1,384,636 units, GM Korea decreased by 23.7% to 200,670 units, RSM decreased 24.7% to 76,588 units, and Ssangyong decreased 29.8% to 56,908 units.
In terms of sales by model in July, the Hyundai premium sedan Grandeur is ranked first with 14,381 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s compact sedan Avante in second place with 11,037 units sold. Kia’s midsize SUV Sorento was third in sales with 9,488 units sold.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in June. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 41.2% compared to the same month in the previous year to 176,468 units.
There was a demand surge prior to the reduction of special consumption tax cut for passenger cars.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 83,700 units (47.4% market share), an increase of 37.2% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 41.5% y/y increase to 60,005 units (34.0% share). Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) came in third place with a 80.7% y/y increase to 13,668 units (7.7% share). Ssangyong Motor increased sales by 18.6% y/y to 9,746 units (5.5% share), and fifth place experienced GM Korea an increase in sales of 61.5% y/y, to 9,349 units (5.3% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, fell for all five Korean OEMs in June: by 34.2% y/y at Hyundai, 23.8% y/y at Kia, 45.8% y/y at GM Korea, 94.7% y/y at RSM and 79.8% y/y at Ssangyong. In total, overseas sales fell by 32.6% y/y to 373,216 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in June were all diminished, with Hyundai's global sales down 22.7% y/y to 291,854 units, Kia's sales at 207,406 units decreased 12.1% y/y, GM Korea’s sales fell 28.7% y/y to 25,983 units, RSM sales decreased by 23.7% y/y to 14,260 units, and Ssangyong saw a sales decline of 1.9% y/y to 10,181 units. The overall overseas sales total of the five companies were 549,684 units, a decrease of 19.0% y/y.
For the period January through June 2020, Hyundai global sales volume decreased by 25.2% y/y to 1,589,429 units, Kia decreased by 14.1% y/y to 1,161,426 units, GM Korea decreased by 28.2% y/y to 166,038 units, RSM decreased 21.2% y/y to 67,666 units, and Ssangyong decreased 29.7% y/y to 49,419 units.
In terms of sales by model in June, the Hyundai premium sedan Grandeur is ranked first with 15,688 units sold, followed by Kia’s midsize SUV Sorento in second place with 11,596 units sold. Hyundai’s compact sedan Avante was third in sales with 10,875 units sold.

By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 70,810 units (48.5% market share), an increase of 4.5% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 19.0% y/y increase to 51,181 units (35.0% share). Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) came in third place with a 72.4% y/y increase to 10,571 units (7.2% share). Ssangyong Motor decreased sales by 25.0% y/y to 7,575 units (5.2% share), and fifth place experienced GM Korea a decrease in sales of 10.9% y/y, to 5,993 units (4.1% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, fell for all five Korean OEMs in May: by 49.6% y/y at Hyundai, 44.0% y/y at Kia, 45.3% y/y at GM Korea, 83.2% y/y at RSM and 68.1% y/y at Ssangyong. In total, overseas sales fell by 47.8% y/y to 277,286 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in May were all diminished, with Hyundai's global sales down 39.3% y/y to 217,510 units, Kia's sales at 160,913 units decreased 32.7% y/y, GM Korea’s sales fell 39.7% y/y to 24,778 units, RSM sales decreased by 16.2% y/y to 11,929 units, and Ssangyong saw a sales decline of 32.8% y/y to 8,286 units. The overall overseas sales total of the five companies was 423,416 units, a decrease of 36.3% y/y.
For the period January through May 2020, Hyundai global sales volume decreased by 26.3% y/y to 1,288,629 units, Kia decreased by 14.9% y/y to 949,860 units, GM Korea decreased by 28.1% y/y to 140,053 units, RSM decreased 20.5% y/y to 53,406 units, and Ssangyong decreased 34.5% y/y to 39,238 units.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in April. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 6.5% compared to the same month in the previous year to 145,141 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 71,042 units (48.9% market share), a decrease of 0.5% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 19.9% y/y increase to 50,361 units (34.7% share). Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) came in third place with an 78.4% y/y increase to 11,015 units (7.6% share). GM Korea increased sales by 4.2% y/y to 6,706 units (4.6% share), and fifth place Ssangyong Motor experienced a decrease in sales of 41.4% y/y, to 6,017 units (4.1% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, fell for all five Korean OEMs in April: by 70.4% y/y at Hyundai, 54.9% y/y at Kia, 32.8% y/y at GM Korea, 72.5% y/y at RSM and 67.4% y/y at Ssangyong. In total, overseas sales fell by 62.6% y/y to 196,803 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in April were all diminished, with Hyundai's global sales down 56.9% y/y to 159,079 units, Kia's sales at 134,216 units decreased 41.1% y/y, GM Korea’s sales fell 26.7% y/y to 28,749 units, RSM sales decreased by 4.6% y/y to 13,087 units, and Ssangyong saw a sales decline of 46.4% y/y to 6,813 units. The overall overseas sales total of the five companies was 341,944 units, a decrease of 48.4% y/y.
For the period January through April 2020, Hyundai global sales volume decreased by 23.6% y/y to 1,062,505 units, Kia decreased by 10.8% y/y to 782,901 units, GM Korea decreased by 25.0% y/y to 115,277 units, RSM decreased 21.6% y/y to 41,477 units, and Ssangyong decreased 34.9% y/y to 30,952 units.
In terms of sales by model in April, the Hyundai premium sedan Grandeur is ranked first with 15,000 units sold, followed by Kia’s midsize SUV Sorento in second place with 9,270 units sold. Hyundai's compact sedan Avante was third in sales with 8,249 units sold.
