New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea up 1.6% in December, down 3.1% in 2022
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales. In December, new vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 1.6% compared to the same month in the previous year to 131,526 units, while 2022 full year vehicle sales in Korea decreased 3.1% year-over-year (y/y) to 1,388,476 units.
In 2022, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 688,884 units (49.6% market share), a decrease of 5.2% y/y, followed by Kia Motors with a 1.1% increase to 541,068 units (39.0% share).
Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 21.8% increase to 68,666 units (4.9% share). Renault Korea sales decreased by 13.9% to 52,621 units (3.8% share), and fifth place GM Korea experienced a decline in sales of 31.4%, to 37,237 units (2.7% share).
Overseas sales in 2022, including exports, for five Korean OEMs increased, by 2.9% y/y at Hyundai, 5.4% at Kia, 24.6% at GM Korea, 63.3% at Renault Kora and 61.0% at Ssangyong.
For 2022, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 1.4% y/y to 3,944,579 units, Kia increased by 4.6% to 2,903,619 units, GM Korea increased by 11.7% to 264,875 units, Renault Korea increased 27.8% to 169,641 units, and Ssangyong increased 34.9% to 113,960 units.
In terms of sales by model in 2022, the Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter is ranked first with 92,411 units sold, followed by Kia’s midsize SUV Sorento in second place with 68,902 units sold. Hyundai’s premium sedan Grandeur was third in sales with 67,030 units sold.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea increase 3.3% in November
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in November. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 3.3% compared to the same month in the previous year to 127,157 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 60,926 units (47.9% market share), a decrease of 1.8% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 13.4% increase to 52,200 units (41.1% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 2.3% increase to 6,421 units (5.0% share). Renault Korea Motors sales decreased by 9.4% to 5,553 units (4.4% share), and fifth GM Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 21.4% to 2,057 units (1.6% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, increased for all five Korean OEMs in November. Sales increased 13.8% at Hyundai, 15.4% at Kia, 115.4% at GM Korea, 0.3% at Renault Korea and 92.0% at Ssangyong.
Global sales for the five automakers in November were increased with Hyundai's sales up 10.7% y/y to 351,179 units, Kia's sales increased 15.0% to 252,825 units, GM Korea’s sales jumped by 86.2% to 22,860 units and Ssangyong’s increasd 27.8% to 11,222 units. Renault Korea’s sales decreased 3.0% to 17,333 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 655,419 units, an increase of 13.8%.
For the period January through November 2022, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 1.2% y/y to 3,600,138 units, Kia increased by 3.7% to 2,663,734 units, GM Korea increased by 7.9% to 241,123 units, Renault Korea increased 33.2% to 159,964 units and Ssangyong increased 38.5% to 104,866 units.
In terms of sales by model in November, Kia’s MPV Carnical was ranked first with 7,565 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter in second place with 7,020 units sold and Kia’s mid-size SUV Sorento was third in sales with 6,656 units.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea increase 12.8% in October
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in October. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 12.8% compared to the same month in the previous year to 120,026 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 60,736 units (50.6% market share), an increase of 5.1% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 13.7% increase to 43,032 units (35.9% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 139.4% increase to 7,850 units (6.5% share). Renault Korea Motors sales decreased by 13.3% to 4,338 units (3.6% share), and fifth GM Korea experienced an increase in sales of 63.3% to 4,070 units (3.4% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, increased for all five Korean OEMs in October. Sales increased 13.9% at Hyundai, 7.5% at Kia, 419.0% at GM Korea, 125.2% at Renault Korea and 255.7% at Ssangyong.
Global sales for the five automakers in October were increased as well, with Hyundai's global sales up 12.2% y/y to 347,324 units, Kia's sales increased 8.6% to 238,660 units and GM Korea’s sales jumped by 290.0% to 26,811 units. Renault Korea’s sales increased 65.6% to 19,258 units and Ssangyong’s sales soared 175.9% to 13,186 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 645,239 units, an increase of 16.8%.
For the period January through October 2022, Hyundai global sales volume increased by 0.4% y/y to 3,251,373 units, Kia increased by 2.6% to 2,410,246 units, GM Korea increased by 3.3% to 218,263 units, Renault Korea increased 39.6% to 142,631 units and Ssangyong increased 39.9% to 93,644 units.
In terms of sales by model in October, Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter was ranked first with 9,020 units sold, followed by Kia’s light-duty truck Bongo in second place with 5,872 units sold and Hyundai’s compact sedan Avante was third in sales with 5,615 units.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea increase 23.8% in September
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in September. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 23.8% compared to the same month in the previous year to 113,656 units. In September 2021, vehicle sales were declined due to semiconductor shortage.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 56,910 units (50.1% market share), an increase of 29.8% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 11.8% increase to 40,009 units (35.2% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 98.9% increase to 7,675 units (6.8% share). Renault Korea Motors sales increased by 14.7% to 5,050 units (4.4% share), and fifth GM Korea experienced an increase in sales of 3.6% to 4,012 units (3.5% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, increased for all five Korean OEMs in September. Sales increased 24.3% at Hyundai, 10.9% at Kia, 106.6% at GM Korea, 34.1% at Renault Korea and 74.4% at Ssangyong.
Global sales for the five automakers in September were increased as well, with Hyundai's global sales up 24.4% y/y to 355,040 units, Kia's sales increased 11.0% to 249,146 units, GM Korea’s sales increased by 77.6% to 24,422 units. Renault Korea’s sales increased 28.3% to 18,922 units and Ssangyong’s sales surged 90.3% to 11,322 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 658,852 units, an increase of 21.1%.
For the period January through September 2022, Hyundai global sales volume decreased by 1.0% y/y to 2,901,535 units, Kia increased by 2.0% to 2,171,274 units, GM Korea decreased by 6.3% to 191,452 units, Renault Korea increased 36.2% to 123,373 units and Ssangyong increased 29.4% to 80,458 units.
In terms of sales by model in September, Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter was ranked first with 8,503 units sold, followed by Kia’s midsize crossover SUV Sorento in second place with 5,335 units sold and Kia’s light-duty truck Bongo was third in sales with 5,303 units.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea decrease 1.1% in August
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in August. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 1.1% compared to the same month in the previous year to 105,091 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 49,224 units (46.8% market share), a decrease of 3.5% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 1.0% increase to 41,404 units (39.4% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 42.4% increase to 6,923 units (6.6% share). Renault Korea Motors sales decreased by 14.2% to 3,950 units (3.8% share), and fifth GM Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 24.3% to 3,590 units (3.4% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, increased for all five Korean OEMs in August: sales increased 14.7% at Hyundai, 12.6% at Kia, 23.1% at GM Korea, 80.9% at Renault Korea and 30.5% at Ssangyong.
Global sales for the five automakers in August were increased as well, with Hyundai's global sales up 11.6% y/y to 334,794 units, Kia's sales increased 10.4% to 239,887 units, GM Korea’s sales increased by 9.6% to 18,208 units. Renault Korea’s sales increased 31.4% to 11,622 units and Ssangyong’s sales surged 38.0% to 10,675 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 615,186 units, an increase of 11.8%.
For the period January through August 2022, Hyundai global sales volume decreased by 3.8% y/y to 2,544,681 units, Kia increased by 0.8% to 1,919,106 units, GM Korea decreased by 12.4% to 167,030 units, Renault Korea increased 37.8% to 104,451 units and Ssangyong increased 23.0% to 69,136 units.
In terms of sales by model in August, Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter was ranked first with 7,792 units sold, followed by Kia’s midsize crossover SUV Sorento in second place with 5,674 units sold and Kia’s light-duty truck Bongo was third in sales with 5,389 units.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea decrease 1.1% in July
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in July. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 1.1% compared to the same month in the previous year to 122,134 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 56,305 units (46.1% market share), a decrease of 5.9% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 6.6% increase to 51,355 units (42.0% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 7.9% increase to 6,100 units (5.0% share). Renault Korea Motors sales decreased by 14.1% to 4,257 units (3.5% share), and fifth GM Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 15.7% to 4,117 units (3.4% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, increased for all five Korean OEMs in July: sales increased 6.3% at Hyundai, 6.2% at Kia, 53.2% at GM Korea, 104.4% at Renault Korea and 85.9% at Ssangyong.
Global sales for the five automakers in July were increased as well, with Hyundai's global sales up 4.0% y/y to 325,999 units, Kia's sales increased 6.3% to 257,903 units, GM Korea’s sales jumped by 35.7% to 26,066 units. Renault Korea’s sales surged 51.1% to 16,673 units and Ssangyong’s sales increased 31.8% to 10,752 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 637,393 units, an increase of 7.2%.
For the period January through July 2022, Hyundai global sales volume decreased by 6.0% y/y to 2,205,040 units, Kia decreased by 0.6% to 1,677,391 units, GM Korea decreased by 14.5% to 148,822 units, Renault Korea increased 38.6% to 92,829 units and Ssangyong increased 20.6% to 58,461 units.
In terms of sales by model in July, Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter was ranked first with 8,986 units sold, followed by Kia’s midsize crossover SUV Sorento in second place with 6,940 units sold and Hyundai’s premium sedan Grandeur was third in sales with 6,777 units.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in June. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 10.1% compared to the same month in the previous year to 121,153 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 59,510 units (49.1% market share), a decrease of 13.0% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 8.5% decrease to 45,110 units (37.2% share). Renault Korea Motors came in third place with a 34.0% increase to 7,515 units (6.2% share). Ssangyong Motor sales decreased by 19.9% to 4,585 units (3.8% share), and fifth GM Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 22.8% to 4,433 units (3.7% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in June: sales increased 4.3% at Kia, 5.3% at GM Korea and 23.2% at Ssangyong. Sales decreased by 2.5% at Hyundai and 47.5% at Renault Korea. In total, overseas sales decreased by 0.1% to 524,699 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in June were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales down 4.5% y/y to 340,534 units, Kia's sales increased 1.8% to 258,610 units, GM Korea’s sales dropped by 0.7% to 26,688 units. Renault Korea’s sales decreased 15.2% to 12,011 units and Ssangyong’s sales decreased 5.8% to 8,009 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 645,852 units, a decrease of 2.2%.
For the period January through June 2022, Hyundai global sales volume decreased by 7.6% y/y to 1,877,193 units, Kia decreased by 1.8% to 1,418,617 units, GM Korea decreased by 20.7% to 122,756 units, Renault Korea increased 36.2% to 76,156 units and Ssangyong increased 18.3% to 47,709 units.
In terms of sales by model in June, Hyundai’s compact sedan Avante was ranked first with 7,919 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter in second place with 6,980 units sold and Hyundai’s mid-size crossover SUV Palisade was third in sales with 5,760 units.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in May. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 3.5% compared to the same month in the previous year to 119,807 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 63,373 units (52.9% market share), an increase of 2.1% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 4.7% decrease to 45,663 units (38.1% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 13.7% decrease to 4,275 units (3.6% share). Renault Korea Motors sales dropped by 19.6% to 3,728 units (3.1% share), and fifth GM Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 39.8% to 2,768 units (2.3% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in May: sales increased 9.3% at GM Korea and 4.0% at Ssangyong. Sales decreased by 1.1% at Hyundai, 5.0% at Kia and 14.9% at Renault Korea. In total, overseas sales decreased by 2.6% to 471,359 units.
Global sales for all of five automakers in May were declined, with 0.5% y/y at Hyundai to 324,039 units, 4.9% at Kia to 234,554 units, 4.4% at GM Korea to 15,700 units, 17.0% at Renault Korea to 8,591 units and 6.0% at Ssangyong to 8,282 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 591,166 units, a decrease of 2.8%.
For the period January through May 2022, Hyundai global sales volume decreased by 8.2% y/y to 1,536,865 units, Kia decreased by 2.5% to 1,159,832 units, GM Korea decreased by 24.9% to 96,068 units, Renault Korea increased 53.6% to 64,145 units and Ssangyong increased 24.8% to 39,700 units.
In terms of sales by model in May, Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter was ranked first with 8,299 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s compact sedan Avante in second place with 7,602 units sold and Kia’s light-duty truck Bongo was third in sales with 5,655 units.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea decrease 11.8% in April
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in April. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 11.8% compared to the same month in the previous year to 119,628 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 59,415 units (49.7% market share), a decrease of 15.4% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 2.0% decrease to 50,095 units (41.9% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 45.8% increase to 4,839 units (4.0% share). GM Korea sales dropped by 46.1% to 2,951 units (2.5% share), and fifth Renault Korea Motors experienced a decrease in sales of 57.4% to 2,328 units (1.9% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in April: sales increased 363.9% at Renault Korea, 5.3% at GM Korea and 210.5% at Ssangyong. Sales decreased by 10.6% at Hyundai and 6.8% at Kia. In total, overseas sales decreased by 5.2% to 475,941 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in April were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales down 11.6% y/y to 308,788 units, Kia's sales decreased 5.8% to 238,538 units, GM Korea’s sales dropped by 7.8% to 19,785 units. Renault Korea’s sales increased 117.4% to 20,318 units and Ssangyong’s sales increased 85.8% to 8,140 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 595,569 units, a decrease of 6.6%.
For the period January through April 2022, Hyundai global sales volume decreased by 10.2% y/y to 1,211,733 units, Kia decreased by 2.0% to 924,277 units, GM Korea decreased by 27.9% to 80,368 units, Renault Korea increased 76.9% to 55,554 units and Ssangyong increased 36.6% to 31,418 units.
In terms of sales by model in April, Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter is ranked first with 8,423 units sold, followed by Kia’s light-duty truck Bongo in second place with 6,402 units sold and Hyundai’s compact sedan Avante was third in sales with 6,382 units.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea decrease 21.2% in March
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in March. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 21.2% compared to the same month in the previous year to 111,124 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 52,883 units (47.6% market share), a decrease of 28.4% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 11.7% decrease to 45,066 units (40.6% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 18.5% increase to 5,102 units (4.6% share). Renault Korea Motors sales dropped by 21.6% to 4,464 units (4.0% share), and fifth GM Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 41.3% to 3,609 units (3.2% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in March: sales increased 1.8% at Kia, 106.6% at Renault Korea and 22.8% at Ssangyong. Sales decreased by 14.3% at Hyundai and 9.7% at GM Korea. In total, overseas sales decreased by 7.2% to 497,274 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in March were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales down 17.0% y/y to 313,926 units, Kia's sales decreased 0.9% to 250,646 units, GM Korea’s sales dropped by 16.2% to 24,821 units, Renault Korea’s sales increased 21.4% to 10,409 units and Ssangyong’s sales increased 20.2% to 8,596 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 608,398 units, a decrease of 10.1%.
For the period January through March 2022, Hyundai global sales volume decreased by 9.8% y/y to 901,913 units, Kia decreased by 0.7% to 685,358 units, GM Korea decreased by 32.7% to 60,583 units, Renault Korea increased 59.7% to 35,236 units and Ssangyong increased 25.0% to 23,278 units.
In terms of sales by model in March, Hyundai’s premium sedan Grandeur is ranked first with 6,663 units sold, followed by Kia’s mid-size crossover SUV Sorento in second place with 5,435 units sold and Kia’s compact SUV Sportage was third in sales with 4,919 units.

New vehicle sales by 5 major OEMs in South Korea increase 1.9% in February
Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in February. New vehicle sales in South Korea increased by 1.9% compared to the same month in the previous year to 103,274 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 53,010 units (51.3% market share), an inecrease of 1.7% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 5.3% increase to 39,560 units (38.3% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 69.8% increase to 4,540 units (4.4% share). Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) sales dropped by 4.7% to 3,718 units (3.6% share), and fifth GM Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 52.0% to 2,446 units (2.4% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in February: sales increased 1.3% at Hyundai, 4.5% at Kia, 126.3% at RSM and 2,091.4% at Ssangyong. Sales decreased by 11.8% at GM Korea. In total, overseas sales increased by 3.4% to 463,937 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in February were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales up 1.4% y/y to 304,613 units, Kia's sales at 221,152 units up 4.7%, GM Korea’s sales at 22,851 units dropped by 19.1%, RSM’s sales increased 56.8% to 11,513 units and Ssangyong’s sales increased 153.9% to 7,082 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 567,211 units, an increase of 3.1%.
For the period January through February 2022, Hyundai global sales volume decreased by 5.5% y/y to 587,269 units, Kia decreased by 0.6% to 434,392 units, GM Korea decreased by 44.4% to 35,762 units, RSM increased 84.0% to 24,827 units and Ssangyong increased 28.0% to 14,682 units.
In terms of sales by model in February, Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter is ranked first with 7,995 units sold, followed by Kia’s light-duty truck Bongo in second place with 6,230 units sold and Kia’s midsize crossover SUV Sorento was third in sales with 4,776 units.

Five Korean automakers announced domestic new vehicle sales in January. New vehicle sales in South Korea decreased by 19.2% compared to the same month in the previous year to 93,900 units.
By company, Hyundai Motor was the leader with sales of 46,205 units (49.2% market share), a decrease of 22.3% year-over-year (y/y), followed by Kia Motors with a 10.7% decrease to 37,038 units (39.4% share). Ssangyong Motor came in third place with a 14.4% decline to 4,836 units (5.2% share). Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) sales increased by 26.7% to 4,477 units (4.8% share), and fifth GM Korea experienced a decrease in sales of 78.0% to 1,344 units (1.4% share).
Overseas sales, including exports, mixed for five Korean OEMs in January: sales decreased 9.8% at Hyundai, 4.6% at Kia, 61.5% at GM Korea and Ssangyong at 8.8% y/y. Sales increased by 237.5% at RSM. In total, overseas sales declined by 9.7% to 434,948 units.
Global sales for the five automakers in January were mixed as well, with Hyundai's global sales down 12.1% y/y to 282,204 units, Kia's sales at 212,819 units down 5.7%, GM Korea’s sales at 12,911 units dropped by 64.3% and Ssangyong’s sales decreased 12.4% to 7,600 units. RSM’s sales increased 116.4% to 13,314 units. The overall global sales total of the five companies were 528,848 units, a decrease of 11.5%.
In terms of sales by model in January, Genesis’s midsize sedan G80 is ranked first with 5,501 units sold, followed by Hyundai’s light-duty truck Porter in second place with 5,443 units sold and Hyundai’s premium sedan Grandeur was third in sales with 5,437 units.
