JSAE Exposition 2018 exhibition hall |
Automotive suppliers exhibited products and technologies associated with the CASE (Connected, Autonomous, Shared, Electric) technology fields at the JSAE Automotive Engineering Exhibition 2018 (Period: May 23 to 25, 2018, Venue: Pacifico Yokohama exhibition center). This article explores some of the latest trends associated with CASE products and element technologies by examining the exhibits of the major Tier 1 system suppliers such as Bosch, Continental, Denso, and Aisin.
Against the backdrop of increasingly stringent Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) regulations and Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations being implemented around the world, automakers are enhancing their vehicle lineups to meet these ZEV and CAFÉ regulations, especially with respect to electric vehicles (EV), and hybrid vehicles (HV). The major Tier 1 suppliers expect that cars powered by internal combustion engines (ICE), including HVs, will dominate the market until 2025, so they are focusing on 48V systems and the further evolution of ICE while considering future electric mobility solutions.
At this year's exhibition, many of the products and technologies displayed focused on electrification, low fuel consumption, low emissions, and lightweight solutions. Bosch plans to start production of a 48V battery in China at the end of 2018. A plastic housing has been adopted for the battery, which has been downsized and standardized so that it can be mounted on every type of vehicle. In addition to its EV drive unit and 48V system, Continental exhibited a lightweight solution with a rear cradle made of polyamide resin. Denso introduced an inverter equipped with a SiC power device currently under development as well as a cooling system.
As an integrated control system for autonomous vehicles, Bosch and Aisin exhibited electrified products for powertrain drive systems such as eAxle (electric axle), EPS (electric power steering), and EBS (electronic braking system).
Various products and technologies relating to the fields of automated driving and connectivity were introduced by just about every company at the exhibition. Exhibits included in-vehicle cameras and sensors, and vehicle location information technology using satellite positioning systems, which are utilized in automated driving and automatic parking system technologies, as well as mobility services that are used in conjunction with car navigation systems and smartphones. In particular, there were numerous exhibits, including those of electrical products manufacturers, relating to Camera Monitoring System (CMS) and Human Machine Interface (HMI) system technologies, where features such as haptics and gesture control technologies were demonstrated. Hands-on demonstrations of automated driving technologies were also conducted using simulators, etc.
