UK vehicle production decrease 1.7% to 130,151 units in February
On March 27, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for February decreased 1.7% over the previous year to 130,151 units. Passenger car production was down 0.8% to 122,171 units and commercial vehicle production was down 13.6% to 7,980 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was down by 9.3% to 214,155 units.
Vehicle exports down 4.5% (y/y) to 99,700 units and domestic sales increased 8.5% (y/y) to 30,451 units. The percentage of export was 76.6%.
In the first two months of 2020, total vehicle production decreased 2.2% (y/y) to 256,667 units. The passenger car production was down 1.5% to 240,485 units, commercial vehicle was down 12.1% to 16,182 units and engines were down 5.4% to 452,348 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Despite the myriad global challenges the UK automotive industry has faced in recent times, it remains fundamentally strong and February’s figures reflect that. However, these figures also reflect the calm before the storm. With UK car plants now effectively on national shutdown and many global markets closed, the outlook is of deep concern. We wholeheartedly welcome government’s extraordinary package of emergency support for businesses and workers, but this must get through to businesses now. If we’re to keep this sector alive and in a position to help Britain get back on its feet, we urgently need funding to be released, additional measures to ease pressure on cashflow and clarity on how employment support measures will work."

UK vehicle production decrease 2.7% to 126,516 units in January
On February 27, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for January decreased 2.7% over the previous year to 126,516 units. Passenger car production was down 2.1% to 118,314 units and commercial vehicle production was down 10.7% to 8,202 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was down by 1.7% to 238,193 units.
Vehicle exports up 3.2% (y/y) to 102,410 units and domestic sales decreased 21.9% (y/y) to 24,106 units. The percentage of export was 80.9%.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Exports are the bedrock for UK car manufacturing so a rise in January exports is welcome following recent declining demand in overseas markets. These figures, however, still give great cause for concern, with another month of falling car production driven by a lack of confidence and corresponding weak demand in the UK. The upcoming Budget is an opportunity for the government to provide supportive measures to stimulate the market, but the biggest boost would be the agreement of an ambitious free trade deal with Europe. This would end the ongoing uncertainty and help the UK to recover its hard-won reputation as a great place for automotive investment."
