UK vehicle production increase 38.6% to 56,033 units in August
On September 29, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for August increased 38.6% over the previous year to 56,033 units. Passenger car production was up 34.0% to 49,901 units and commercial vehicle production was up 92.9% to 6,132 units year over year (y/y). Vehicle exports up 37.1% (y/y) to 42,859 units and domestic sales increased 43.7% (y/y) to 13,174 units. The percentage of export was 76.5%.
In the first eight months of 2022, total vehicle production decreased 9.0% (y/y) to 575,934 units. The passenger car production was down 13.3% to 511,106 units, commercial vehicle was up 50.3% to 64,828 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "While another month of rising UK car production is good news, and testament to sectoral efforts to overcome supply chain shortages, it overshadows what is an extremely tough and uncertain environment for manufacturers. Volumes are down dramatically and firms are having to take drastic steps to safeguard their businesses in the face of myriad challenges. The government’s measures announced last week to alleviate crippling energy costs provide valuable respite, but long-term action is needed to restore stability and provide the sector with a globally competitive investment framework. Reform of business rates, enhanced capital allowances, an affordable and secure supply of low carbon energy, and investment in new skills can enable this critical sector to deliver the economic growth, productivity improvements, balance of trade benefits and job security the UK sorely needs."

Passenger car production was up 5.6% to 72,946 units and commercial vehicle production was up 64.4% to 9,549 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was down by 7.2% to 138,209 units.
Vehicle exports up 0.4% (y/y) to 59,578 units and domestic sales increased 47.0% (y/y) to 22,917 units. The percentage of export was 72.2%.
In the first half of 2022, total vehicle production decreased 14.9% (y/y) to 453,727 units. The passenger car production was down 19.2% to 403,131 units, commercial vehicle was up 47.4% to 50,596 units and engines were down 12.7% to 812,397 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Car manufacturers have been suffering from a ‘long Covid’ for much of 2022, as global component shortages undermine production and put supply chains under extreme pressure. Key model changeovers and the closure of a major plant last year have also impacted output, but there are grounds for optimism with rising output over the last two months. As these issues recede over the next year or two, investment in new technologies and processes will be essential but this will depend on our underlying competitiveness. Sky-high energy costs, non-competitive business rates and skills shortages must all be addressed if we are to build on our inherent strengths and seize the opportunities presented by the dash for decarbonised mobility."

UK vehicle production decrease 17.5% to 75,650 units in January
On February 25, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for January decreased 17.5% over the previous year to 75,650 units. Passenger car production was down 20.1% to 68,790 units and commercial vehicle production was up 22.2% to 6,860 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was down by 15.9% to 141,472 units.
Vehicle exports decreased 15.4% (y/y) to 61,189 units and domestic sales decreased 25.2% (y/y) to 14,461 units. The percentage of export was 80.9%.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "It’s another torrid start to the year as global supply issues and structural changes squeeze output while model changes impact production scheduling. The UK automotive manufacturing industry is, however, fundamentally strong and recent investment announcements are testament to the potential for growth, not least in terms of rising EV production. Long-term recovery can only be delivered, however, if global competitiveness is assured and for that we must address both inflationary and fixed costs, most obviously escalating energy prices, but also fiscal and trading costs. Every measure must be taken if we are to secure a bright, electrified future for our world-class automotive manufacturing base and the high skilled, high value jobs it creates across Britain."
