UK car production decreases 11.4% in December, decreases 5.5% in 2021
On January 27, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK car production for December decreased 11.4% over the previous year to 69,158 units. Passenger car production was down 12.7% to 62,310 units and commercial vehicle production was up 3.2% to 6,848 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was down by 25.6% to 103,542 units.
Full-year production of 933,175 vehicles in 2021 represented a decrease of 5.5% from 2020. The passenger car production was down 6.7% to 859,575 units, commercial vehicle was up 11.3% to 73,600 units and engines were down 10.8% to 1,641,881 units.
Vehicle exports down 5.5% (y/y) to 743,505 units and domestic sales decreased 5.2% (y/y) to 189,670 units. The percentage of export was 79.7%.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "2021 was another incredibly difficult year for UK car manufacturing, one of the worst since the Second World War which lays bare the exposure of the sector to structural and, especially, Covid-related impacts. Despite this miserable year, there is optimism. With Brexit uncertainty largely overcome with the TCA (Trade Cooperation Agreement) deal, investments have been unleashed, most of which will help transform the sector to its zero-emission future. This is a vote of global confidence in the UK but must be matched by a commitment to our long-term competitiveness; support for the supply chain in overcoming parts shortages, help with skills and training and, most urgently, measures to mitigate the escalating energy costs which are threatening viability."

UK vehicle production decreased 27.1% to 83,696 units in November
On December 23, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for November decreased 27.1% over the previous year to 83,696 units.
Passenger car production was down 28.7% to 75,756 units and commercial vehicle production was down 7.8% to 7,940 units year over year (y/y).
Production of engines was down 30.2% to 132,555 units.
Vehicle exports down 29.7%(y/y) to 67,274 units and domestic sales decreased 14.5% to 16,422 units. The percentage of export was 80.4%.
In the first eleven months of 2021, total vehicle production decreased 4.9% to 864,014 units.
The passenger car production was down 6.2% to 797,261 units, commercial vehicle was up 12.2% to 66,753 units and engines were down 9.5% to 1,539,786 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said, “These are incredibly worrying figures, underscoring the severity of situation facing the automotive industry. Covid is impacting supply chains massively, causing global shortages – especially of semiconductors – which is likely to affect the sector throughout next year. With an increasingly negative economic backdrop, rising inflation and Covid resurgent home and abroad, the circumstances are the toughest in decades. With output massively down for the past five months and likely to continue, maintaining cashflow, especially in the supply chain, is of vital importance. We have to look to government to provide support measures in the same way it is recognising other Covid-impacted sectors. The industry is as well prepared as it can be for the implementation of full customs controls at UK borders from 1 January but any delays arising from ill-prepared freight or systems will place further stress on businesses that operate ‘just in time’. Should any problems arise, contingency measures must be implemented immediately to keep cross border trade flowing smoothly.”

Vehicle exports down 38.2% (y/y) to 57,175 units and domestic sales decreased 40.6% (y/y) to 17,793 units. The percentage of export was 76.3%.
In the first nine months of 2021, total vehicle production increased 4.5% (y/y) to 707,697 units. The passenger car production was up 3.8% to 656,776 units, commercial vehicle was up 15.4% to 50,921 units and engines were down 2.8% to 1,278,117 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said, "The substantial decline in UK car output in September continues the worrying trend we have seen over the past three months. The industry is continuing to battle the effects of the pandemic with the shortage of semiconductors stalling production. Whilst there was welcome news in the Budget to support the transition to zero emission vehicle production, battery manufacturing and supply chains, it missed the opportunity to offer meaningful short-term support given Covid-related supply constraints and rising energy bills. This is disappointing given the sector’s importance and its ability to create well-paid jobs across the regions and the revenues it generates, notably from exports."

Production of engines was down by 23.6% to 81,266 units.
Vehicle exports down 31.7% (y/y) to 31,255 units and domestic sales decreased 9.6% (y/y) to 9,170 units. The percentage of export to production was 77.3%.
In the first eight months of 2021, total vehicle production increased 14.1% (y/y) to 632,729 units. The passenger car production was up 13.8% to 589,607 units, commercial vehicle was up 18.2% to 43,122 units and engines were up 3.9% to 1,140,058 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT, said, "Another significant decline for UK car production is extremely worrying both for the sector and its many thousands of workers nationwide. While not the only factor at play, the impact of the semiconductor shortage on manufacturing cannot be overstated. Carmakers and their suppliers are battling to keep production lines rolling with constraints expected to continue well into 2022 and possibly beyond. Job support schemes such as furlough have proven such a lifeline to automotive businesses yet its cessation today comes at the worst time, with the industry still facing Covid-related stoppages which are damaging the sector and threatening the supply chain in particular. Other countries have extended their support; we need the UK to do likewise.”

In the first half of 2021, total vehicle production increased 30.8% (y/y) to 533,241 units. The passenger car production was up 30.8% to 498,923 units, commercial vehicle was up 30.3% to 34,318 units and engines were up 15.3% to 939,488 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "While the UK automotive industry continues to suffer the effects of the global pandemic, with first half year production down significantly and a tough few months looming, the sector has the capability to recover. The latest investments into new models and battery production show a bright future is within reach, yet the industry still faces headwinds most notably from global semiconductor shortages and staff absenteeism as a result of staff being ‘pinged’. Businesses have ensured their facilities are Covid secure but urgent action is needed, such as bringing forward the 16 August target date for exempting fully vaccinated adults from self-isolation and introducing a “test to release” scheme to support those employees not yet fully vaccinated. Operating conditions are still challenging, however, highlighting the need for specific actions to help competitiveness, such as creating a Build Back Better Fund and the alleviation of high energy costs, to get the sector back on track and towards the volumes that make UK facilities viable."

UK vehicle production increase 897.8% in May
On June 25, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for May increased 897.8% over the previous year to 61,205 units. Passenger car production was up 934.3% year over year (y/y) to 54,962 units and commercial vehicle production was up 661.3% to 6,243 units. Production of engines was up by 108.9% to 116,639 units.
Vehicle exports up 979.5% (y/y) to 49,775 units and domestic sales increased 650.5% (y/y) to 11,430 units. The percentage of export was 81.3%.
In the first five months of 2021, total vehicle production increased 32.1% (y/y) to 458,336 units. The passenger car production was up 32.4% to 429,826 units, commercial vehicle was up 28.5% to 28,510 units and engines were up 18.8% to 781,834 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "May’s figures continue to look inflated when compared to last year’s near total standstill of production lines. The recovery of car production is, however, still massively challenged here and abroad by global supply shortages, particularly semiconductors. If the UK is to remain competitive, therefore, it must ensure it has a globally attractive policy framework for both vehicle production and the supply chain. Accelerating zero emission car production is part of this package, so while 1 in 5 models made here this year is alternatively fuelled, we need to drive investment in R&D, charging infrastructure and the market to ensure we can deliver the net zero future society demands."

In the first four months of 2021, total vehicle production increased 16.5% (y/y) to 397,131 units. The passenger car production was up 17.3% to 374,864 units, commercial vehicle was up 4.2% to 22,267 units and engines were up 10.4 to 665,195 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "April’s figures were always going to be exceptional as factories were closed at this time last year amid the first wave of the pandemic. However, the situation for UK car manufacturers remains challenging, particularly with the worldwide shortage of semiconductors affecting output. While it’s good news that the UK is on track with its COVID roadmap back to normality, we still need strong domestic demand and given we’re export-led, confident overseas markets to drive a recovery, both for the automotive sector and for the wider economy."

UK vehicle production increased 44.8% to 121,664 units in March
On April 29, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for March increased 44.8% over the previous year to 121,664 units. Passenger car production was up 46.6% to 115,498 units and commercial vehicle production was up 16.9% to 6,166 units year over year (y/y). Production of engines was up by 31.7% to 196,231 units.
Vehicle exports up 51.8% (y/y) to 98,306 units and domestic sales increased 21.3% (y/y) to 23,358 units. The percentage of export was 80.8%.
In the first quarter of 2021, total vehicle production decreased 5.3% (y/y) to 322,648 units. The passenger car production was down 4.0% to 306,558 units, commercial vehicle was down 24.7% to 16,090 units and engines were down 11.1% to 534,793 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "The first rise for UK car production since summer 2019 is a major step in the right direction but belies the underlying situation. With factories shut for much of March 2020, output was always going to be up but it remains below average, with some GBP 11 billion worth of production lost over the past year. Whilst the Covid situation is improving in the UK and in some major export markets, manufacturers are still struggling to manage residual issues, most notably the global semiconductor shortage. The shift towards electrified vehicle production is fundamental to the future of this vital sector. Securing investment for this transformation will depend on the global competitiveness of our industry. Companies are already having to absorb additional costs arising from our new trading arrangements with the EU, but must also invest in new technologies, new processes and upskilling the workforce. A competitive business environment that helps reduce operating costs and policies that support manufacturing will be essential if the transition to zero is to be Made in the UK."

In the first two months of 2021, total vehicle production decreased 21.7% (y/y) to 200,984 units. The passenger car production was down 20.6% to 191,060 units, commercial vehicle was down 38.3% to 9,924 units and engines were down 25.2% to 338,562 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "A year into the pandemic, these figures are yet more evidence of how badly coronavirus has hit UK car production. Thankfully, there are some rays of light with UK showrooms due to reopen on 12 April, vaccinations progressing and a roadmap to kickstart the economy. The automotive sector can play a crucial role in getting the UK back on its feet, supporting jobs across the country, driving growth and helping the country transition to zero emission mobility. However, the UK is not isolated from global issues and our automotive industry still needs a stable and secure international market in order to prosper."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Yet another month of decline for UK car production is a grave concern and next week’s Budget is the Chancellor’s opportunity to boost the industry by introducing measures that will support competitiveness, jobs and livelihoods. Whilst there have been some very welcome recent announcements, we need to secure our medium to long-term future by creating the conditions that will attract battery gigafactory investment and transform the supply chain. Most immediately, however, we must get our Covid-secure car showrooms back open, ideally before 12 April. This will be the fastest way to UK automotive manufacturing recovery."
