UK vehicle production decreases 13.9% to 89,871 units in October
On November 28, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for October decreased 13.9% over the previous year to 89,871 units. Passenger car production was down 15.3% to 77,484 units and commercial vehicle production was down 3.9% to 12,387 units year over year (y/y).
Vehicle exports down 17.0% (y/y) to 69,746 units and domestic sales decreased 1.3% (y/y) to 20,125 units. The percentage of exports was 77.6%.
In the first ten months of 2024, total vehicle production decreased 8.7% (y/y) to 776,180 units. The passenger car production was down 10.8% to 670,346 units, commercial vehicle was up 6.9% to 105,834 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "These are deeply concerning times for the automotive industry, with massive investments in plants and new zero emission products under intense pressure. Slowdowns in the global market - especially for EVs - are impacting production output, with the situation in the UK particularly acute given we have arguably the toughest targets and most accelerated timeline but without the consumer incentives necessary to drive demand. The cost of stimulating that demand and complying with those targets is huge and, as we are seeing, unsustainable. Urgent action is therefore needed and we will work with government on its rapid review of the regulation and the development of an ambitious and comprehensive Industrial Strategy to assure our competitiveness."

On October 24, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for September decreased 15.2% over the previous year to 84,862 units. Passenger car production was down 20.6% to 70,039 units and commercial vehicle production was up 25.9% to 14,643 units year over year (y/y).
Vehicle exports down 15.1% (y/y) to 60,701 units and domestic sales decreased 15.5% (y/y) to 23,981 units. The percentage of exports was 71.7%.
In the first nine months of 2024, total vehicle production decreased 8.0% (y/y) to 686,309 units. The passenger car production was down 10.2% to 592,862 units, commercial vehicle was up 8.5% to 93,447 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "As UK Automotive undergoes its most radical transformation in more than a century, short term production declines were always anticipated, and they represent a temporary adjustment in exchange for long term growth. Following record investment announcements last year, the sector is ready to build on its position as the UK’s largest exporter of manufactured products. To do so, we need the necessary industrial and market conditions, and the forthcoming Budget and Industrial Strategy must put in place ambitious measures to bolster business confidence, attract investment and secure competitiveness.

UK vehicle production decreases 8.6% to 47,315 units in August
On September 26, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for August decreased 8.6% over the previous year to 47,315 units. Passenger car production was down 8.4% to 41,271 units and commercial vehicle production was down 10.0% to 6,044 units year over year (y/y).
Vehicle exports down 5.4% (y/y) to 38,473 units and domestic sales decreased 20.3% (y/y) to 8,878 units. The percentage of export was 81.2%.
In the first eight months of 2024, total vehicle production decreased 6.9% (y/y) to 601,628 units. The passenger car production was down 8.5% to 522,823 units, commercial vehicle was up 5.8% to 78,805 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "With the traditional summer shutdowns and factories prepping to switch to new models, August was always going to be a quieter month for output. The sector remains optimistic about a return to growth, however, with record levels of investment announced last year.
Realising those investments and securing more depends on the UK industry maintaining its competitiveness so we look forward both to the Chancellor’s Autumn budget and the government’s proposed Industrial Strategy as critical opportunities to demonstrate that it backs auto. Labour’s Automotive Sector Plan, launched at their Party Conference a year ago, should be the blueprint with its proposals for cheaper, green energy, skills investment and the cultivation of healthy markets here and abroad. These are the measures that would enable the industry to drive economic growth in every part of the country."

Passenger car production was down 14.4% to 65,478 units and commercial vehicle production was up 71.7% to 15,252 units year over year (y/y).

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Following significant growth last year, some readjustment in output was to be expected. Indeed, an ongoing degree of volatility is likely as the industry restructures to transition to zero emission vehicle production. As the billions already committed to new models start to deliver a return, volume growth will resume, providing we seize every opportunity to enhance our global competitiveness. We need investment in skills, healthy markets, cheaper green energy, and fair trade deals that help British-built vehicles reach international customers more easily, all of which should be wrapped in an over-arching industrial strategy that ensures automotive continues to be a key driver of economic growth."

The new government’s commitments to gigafactories, a decarbonised energy supply and a faster planning system will help boost our competitiveness and sustain employment in a sector that delivers well paid, skilled jobs nationwide. We can expect further volatility throughout 2024 as manufacturers lay the foundations for a successful zero emission future. Recent investment announcements have boosted confidence and enhanced the UK’s reputation but there needs to be an unrelenting commitment to competitiveness. The industry is transitioning from internal combustion engine cars to electrified vehicles, building on the massive investment commitments made last year. The UK industry faces stiff competition, however, as global competitors seek to secure new models and technologies so a commitment to our industrial competitiveness, from all political parties in this likely election year, must be maintained."

UK vehicle production increases 21.7% to 94,753 units in January
On February 29, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for January increased 21.7% over the previous year to 94,753 units. Passenger car production was up 21.0% to 82,997 units and commercial vehicle production was up 26.9% to 11,756 units year over year (y/y).
Vehicle exports increased 14.9% (y/y) to 70,903 units and domestic sales increased 47.7% (y/y) to 23,850 units. The percentage of export was 74.8%.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "A positive start to the year for UK car production bodes well for the industry and the many thousands of livelihoods on which it depends. There can be no room for complacency, however, given economic headwinds and geopolitical tensions. There must be a relentless commitment to competitiveness, building on the significant recent investments into the sector. The forthcoming Budget is a chance for Government to do just that by introducing measures to boost UK automotive manufacturing, focused on energy, investment competitiveness and market demand."
