UK vehicle production increase 32.6% to 99,582 units in September
On October 26, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for September increased 32.6% over the previous year to 99,582 units. Passenger car production was up 39.8% to 88,230 units and commercial vehicle production was down 5.2% to 11,352 units year over year (y/y).
Vehicle exports up 26.1% (y/y) to 70,955 units and domestic sales increased 52.1% (y/y) to 28,627 units. The percentage of export was 71.3%.
In the first nine months of 2023, total vehicle production increased 14.5% (y/y) to 745,441 units. The passenger car production was up 14.9% to 659,901 units, commercial vehicle was up 11.4% to 85,540 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "A particularly strong period of car making is good news for the UK, given the thousands of jobs and billions of pounds of investment that depend on the sector. With countries around the world shifting to zero-emission motoring, Britain is well placed to be a global EV manufacturing hub if the investment and trading conditions are right. Given the increasing importance of electrified car production, the first and urgent step is for the UK and EU to agree to delay the tougher rules of origin requirements that are due imminently. This would give the necessary breathing space for automotive sectors on both sides of the Channel to scale up gigafactories and green supply chains, both of which are essential for a stable, long-term transition."

UK vehicle production decrease 7.7% to 51,712 units in August
On September 28, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for August decreased 7.7% over the previous year to 51,712 units. Passenger car production was down 9.7% to 45,052 units and commercial vehicle production was up 8.6% to 6,660 units year over year (y/y).
Vehicle exports down 5.2% (y/y) to 40,636 units and domestic sales decreased 15.9% (y/y) to 11,076 units. The percentage of export was 78.6%.
In the first eight months of 2023, total vehicle production increased 12.1% (y/y) to 645,859 units. The passenger car production was up 11.8% to 571,671 units, commercial vehicle was up 14.4% to 74,188 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "After six straight months of growth, a decline in UK car output in what is always the smallest and most variable volume month, is not a cause for concern. With car manufacturers taking advantage of the summer holiday season to upgrade their plants, this is part of an ongoing commitment to deliver the next generation of electric vehicles, with a record number of these models already being made. To secure future investment, however, we need business certainty, not least a UK-EU agreement to delay tougher rules of origin that would damage the competitiveness of electric vehicles in both the European and British markets and concrete details from the UK government on the regulation compelling the sale of EVs in Britain. Both are due to commence in less than 100 days and are essential to business planning and investment for 2024 and beyond."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Another month of growth for UK car production is good news and a sign that, despite challenging economic conditions, the industry’s foundations are strong. But with weak GDP growth, high inflation and rising interest rates, it’s crucial that UK car factories stay globally competitive. All political parties must recognise the strategic importance of this sector and back our call for an industrial strategy that supports local production, assures export market access and attracts further investment to safeguard our future."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "UK car production is starting to motor again, good news for the sector and the many thousands of jobs and livelihoods it sustains. These figures also show how exports, particularly to Europe, continue to be the foundation of British automotive manufacturing so we must do all we can to safeguard the competitiveness of these trading relationships. Most immediately, this means finding a solution to the rules of origin challenge faced by manufacturers on both sides of the Channel, else we risk the application of tariffs - and therefore unnecessary cost - on the very vehicles we are trying to encourage consumers to purchase."

If British car manufacturing is to get back towards those levels, with all the economic benefits that brings, we need to match the best in global competitiveness. That means driving down the high cost of UK energy, reforming business rates and vigorously promoting Britain globally to secure the investments essential to a zero carbon automotive future."
