UK vehicle production increase 17.1% to 79,018 units in March
On April 29, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for March increased 17.1% over the previous year to 79,018 units. Passenger car production was up 18.2% to 70,318 units and commercial vehicle production was up 8.2% to 8,700 units year over year (y/y).
Vehicle exports up 23.4% (y/y) to 55,021 units and domestic sales increased 4.7% (y/y) to 23,997 units. The percentage of export was 69.6%.
In the first three months of 2025, total vehicle production decreased 6.3% (y/y) to 239,213 units. The passenger car production was down 3.2% to 215,236 units, commercial vehicle was down 27.1% to 23,977 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "A March uplift to manufacturing is overdue good news, although the performance was boosted by a comparatively weaker month last year, when holiday timings and product changeovers combined to reduce output. With the last quarter showing demand for British-built cars rising overseas, navigating the new era of trade uncertainty is now the major challenge. Government has rightly recognized automotive manufacturing’s critical role in Britain’s export economy and must now show urgency and creativity to deliver a deal that supports our competitiveness, spurs domestic demand for the latest cleanest vehicles, and helps factory lines flourish."

UK vehicle production decrease 11.6% to 82,178 units in February
On March 27, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for February decreased 11.6% over the previous year to 82,178 units. Passenger car production was down 7.6% to 73,814 units and commercial vehicle production was doen 35.9% to 8,364 units year over year (y/y).
Vehicle exports down 8.0% (y/y) to 63,777 units and domestic sales decreased 22.3% (y/y) to 18,401 units. The percentage of export was 77.6%
.
In the first two months of 2025, total vehicle production decreased 14.7% (y/y) to 160,190 units. The passenger car production was down 11.0% to 144,918 units, commercial vehicle was down 38,6% to 15,272 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "These are worrying times for UK vehicle makers with car production falling for 12 months in a row, rising trade tensions and weak demand. The market transition is not keeping pace with ambition and, while the industry can deliver growth - and green growth at that - it needs policies to deliver that reality.
It was disappointing, therefore, to hear a Spring Statement that did nothing to alleviate the pressure on manufacturers and, moreover, confirms the introduction next month of additional fiscal measures which will actually dissuade consumers from investing. Without substantive regulatory easements, our manufacturing viability remains at risk and the UK’s transition to zero emission mobility under threat."
