The GSMA Mobile World Congress Barcelona, in short MWC™ Barcelona, is an annual four-day event organized by the GSM Association (Global System for Mobile Communications). Like last year, it was held at the Fira Gran Via exhibition site in Barcelona from February 27th to March 2nd 2023. This year's theme was “Velocity, unleashing tomorrow's technology - today”. The event was initiated in 1987, and it is now Europe's largest mobile communications fair.
The 2023 MWC™ Barcelona (MWC23) hosted over 2,400 exhibitors (global mobile operators, device manufacturers, technology providers, vendors, and content owners), including 800 start-ups and it was visited by 88,500 attendees from 202 countries and territories. It is the first event of the 2023 MWC™ series and will be followed by the MWC™ Shanghai, which is scheduled for 28-30 June 2023, the MWC™ Las Vegas planned for 26-28 September 2023, and finally the MWC™ Africa, which will be held in Kigali, Rwanda, from 17-19 October 2023.

As was done last year, one entire hall was dedicated to start-up companies in the framework of the 4YFN (Four Years from Now) program. The number of start-ups increased from around 600 last year to over 800 this year. The goal of the 4YFN event is to support start-ups, investors and companies to connect and launch new business ventures together.
Among the exhibitors, the automotive industry seemed to be less present than last year. However, on March 1st, a whole day was dedicated to car connectivity in the framework of a conference program, called “Smart Mobility Summit”.
At the show, it became obvious that the safety of vulnerable road users is a hot topic these days. Many companies presented their latest achievements in this field and collaborations are increasing. Another topic that deserves special attention in view of the increasing use of 5G is advanced antenna technology that has been presented by many companies.
This report consists of two parts. This is Part 1, in which we will we look at some selected automotive industry related highlights. Part 2 of this report will summarize the conference sessions of the “Smart Mobility Summit”.
Next year's MWC™ Barcelona will take place from 26-29 February 2024.
