  The GSMA Mobile World Congress Barcelona, in short MWC™ Barcelona (https://www.mwcbarcelona.com/), an annual four-day event organized by the GSM Association (https://www.gsma.com/).was held at the Fira Barcelona exhibition site from February, 28th to March 3rd, 2022 under the motto “Connectivity Unleashed”.

  The event was held on-site as well as virtually. In 2020 it was cancelled and in 2021 it was postponed to Summer and smaller than usual with lots of the announcements happening online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was initiated in 1987, and it is now Europe’s largest mobile communications fair. It is said to be the world's most influential event for the connectivity industry.

 

  The MWC™ Barcelona hosted over 1,900 exhibitors (global mobile operators, device manufacturers, technology providers, vendors, and content owners), including 624 start-ups and it was visited by 61,000 attendees from 183 countries.

  The themes at this year's exhibition were:

  1. CloudNet (openRAN, cloud, edge)
  2. 5G Connect (5G for industry, 5G to 6G, sustainability and partnerships)
  3. Internet of Everything (smart cities and industry adoption, drones and devices, people, data, process)
  4. FinTech (identity and security, payment innovations, metaverse)
  5. Tech Horizon (creative tech, diversity4tech, climate and SDGs)
  6. Advanced AI (data and automation, quantum computing, ethics)


  For the first time, the so called Industry City was introduced in hall 4, where visitors could explore demos from the FinTech, manufacturing and automotive sectors and attend a range of summits covering robotics, cybersecurity, smart and future mobility, and much more.

  Hall 6 was dedicated to the 4YFN (Four Years from Now) program. More than 600 start-up companies showcased their products and ideas at small booths. The goal of the 4YFN event is to support start-ups, investors and companies to connect and launch new business ventures together.

  As cars are getting more and more connected, the Mobile World Congress is an important event for the automotive industry. 5G is expected to revolutionize the vehicle of tomorrow enabling automated driving and C-V2X communication.


  The total exhibition report is divided into three parts and looks at some selected automotive industry related topics. This is the first part, which covers car HMI, ADAS and automated driving technologies. In the second part topics, such as in-vehicle connectivity, cloud connectivity and cyber security will be highlighted, and in the third part we will take a look at 5G-connectivity, 5G C-V2X communication technology and 5G C-V2X simulation & testing.
