The 29th edition of the Aachen Colloquium was organized by the Aachen Kolloquium Fahrzeug- und Motorentechnik GbR and took place October 5-7, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 situation the international event was run for the first time as a digital conference and exhibition through the internet. Also the name changed from "Aachen Colloquium Automobile and Engine Technology" to "Aachen Colloquium Sustainable Mobility" to reflect the challenges of this industry: shaping the future mobility under consideration of efficiency and environmental friendliness. Professor Dr.-Ing. Stefan Pischinger, director of the Institute for Combustion Engines (VKA), and Professor Dr.-Ing. Lutz Eckstein, director of the Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika), both at the RWTH Aachen University, were representing the two institutes which jointly organize the annual event. One of the slides from their introduction showed in a sketch the vision of sustainable mobility with the challenges "zero impact emissions", "mobility experience","traffic safety" and "energy efficiency" which would incorporate digitalization, connectivity, automation and new energy carriers.
Automotive experts from OEMs, suppliers, engineering provider, research and university institutes presented on October 6th and 7th in five parallel streams 100 technical presentations. Those were grouped along topics such as high efficiency combustion processes, new combustion engines, electric drive units, electric & hybrid powertrains, fuel consumption & emission solutions, and many others. The presentations were pre-recorded but the presenters were online at their slot for the Q & A sessions with their audience. The virtual exhibition was opened already the evening of before. The virtual set-up allowed the 37 booths to make videos, pictures and documents available for review or download. Through a chat function one could communicate with the staff and a contact form allowed to raise topics which would be answered by e-mail.

Over 800 participants from 27 countries were following the four keynote speeches, the 100 technical presentations of different categories and the virtual exhibition. The proceedings are filling two books with over 1,800 pages and can be ordered - also for previous colloquia - through the homepage www.aachen-colloquium.com.
The next event will be an anniversary. For the 30th Aachen Colloquium from October 4th to 6th, 2021 the Call-for-Papers starts December 1st, 2020 and interested parties can submit their proposals by January 31st, 2021.
