The global market for motorcycles (Part 2): Brazil market declines, recovery in Europe

Brazil, Taiwan, Pakistan, Japan, Europe, and the U.S.

2016/08/19

Summary

先進国の二輪車需要  This report is the second part of a series analyzing major motorcycle producing countries. It will summarize motorcycle production in Brazil, Taiwan, and Pakistan; as well in developed countries (Japan, Europe, and the U.S.)
(Click here for "Click here to part 1, which deals with major motorcycle markets including India, China, and ASEAN nations.")

After surpassing the 2 million unit mark in 2011, motorcycle production in Brazil is declining due to a worsening economy. Production fell 16.8% year-over-year in 2015 to 1.19 million units and 33.6% y/y in the first half of 2016 to 464,000 units. Sales dropped 16.8% y/y in 2015 to 1.19 million units, and 31.4% y/y in the first half of 2016 to 452,000 units.

Production in Taiwan is recovering slowly after the global economic crisis in 2009. However, it declined 4.8% y/y in 2015 to 1.12 million units as exports to Japan declined. Production declined 2.8% y/y in the first half of 2016. To boost domestic sales, the government introduced replacement incentives in January 2016. As a result, Taiwan's domestic sales increased 6.3% y/y in H1 2016 to 351 thousand units.

Pakistan's motorcycle production including three-wheelers was 1.36 million units in fiscal year 2016 (July 2015 to June 2016) with a sharp increase of 20.4% y/y.

Advanced markets saw their motorcycle market shrink significantly after the global economic crisis. This decline continued in Europe until it bottomed out in 2014 and the market rose 5.1% in 2015 to 1.2 million units. The U.S. market is recovering slowly but steadily and rose to 501,000 units in 2015, surpassing the half million units mark for the first time in six years. Japan's domestic sale in 2015 declined 9.6% y/y to 407,000 units due to a sharp decline in sales of the mopeds, the smallest motorcycle segment with an engine displacement up to 50 cc. Production continues to fall with a 12.6% decline y/y to 184,000 units in H1 2016.

Production in Japan, the mother country of major motorcycle manufacturers, declined 12.5% y/y to 522,000 units in 2015. Production increased 6.1% y/y to 268,000 units in H1 2016.

Brazil: Production declines a further 33.6% to 464,000 units in the first half of 2016

Brazilian motorcycle production volume  Production in Brazil, one of the largest producers of motorcycles in the world, declined to 1.26 million units in 2015. This was a y/y drop of 16.8% and the fourth straight year that production fell. Wholesale figures also declined for a fourth straight year, dropping 16.8% y/y to 1.19 million units. The country has seen 6 years of negative economic growth, which underpinned reduced investment associated with falling resource prices that factored into the decline in the motorcycle market.

While Brazil is hosting the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, any positive economic effect from this is expected to be limited; growth is forecast to remain negative in 2016.

Production of motorcycles in the first half of 2016 declined 33.6% y/y to 464,000 units while wholesale figures fell 31.4% y/y to 452,000 units, with the range of the decrease rising.

According to the Brazilian Association of Manufacturers of Motorcycles, Mopeds, Scooters, Bicycles and Similar Products (ABRACICLO), Brazil's production and sales were expected to reach 1.295 million and 1.22 million units, respectively, with a slight increase from the previous year. However, this forecast was optimistic as it assumed y/y growth in the second half of the year. If negative growth continues through H2 2016, both production and sales will fall short of the 900,000 units mark in 2016.

Taiwan: Low exports cause production decline in the first half of 2016, but domestic sales recovering to same level as eight years prior

Taiwanese motorcycle production volume  Taiwan, one of the largest manufacturers of motorcycles, produced 1.12 million units in 2015, declining 4.8% y/y for the first drop in three years. The production decline has continued in 2016 with negative growth of 2.8% y/y to 577,000 units in the first half.

Taiwan exports approximately 40% of the motorcycles it produces, and a decline in export is one cause of the fall in production. Exports fell 8.9% to 455,000 units in 2015 for the first decline in two years. Exports declined 15.3% y/y to 227,000 units in H1 2016 as well. Exports fell for the top three destinations; Japan, Colombia, and Spain.

At the same time, Taiwan's domestic sales in 2015 only declined 0.9% y/y to 668,000 units with a 6.3% increase y/y to 351,000 units in H1 2016. Taiwan's full-year domestic sales in 2016 are expected to surpass 700,000 units for the first time in eight years. This recovery resulted from replacement incentives introduced at the beginning of 2016 by the government.

Japan: Sales drop 12.6% to 184,000 units in the first half of 2016

Japan's sales in 2015 declined 9.6% y/y. Sales of the mopeds with an engine displacement up to 50 cc in particular plunged sharply, falling 15.3% to 194,000 units to drop below the 200,000 units mark. Moped sales in H1 2016 are expected to remain slow, with an 12.6% decline y/y to 184,000 units, and the full-year result falling below the 400,000 units mark.

Production of motorcycles in Japan peaked in 1981 when it surpassed the 7 million units mark. It has been declining since then due to a shrinking domestic market and production moving to facilities overseas. Domestic production increased in 2014 for the first time in four years, but declined 12.5% y/y in 2015 to 522,000 units. It increased 6.1% y/y to 268,000 units in H1 2016.

Japan's exports in 2015 declined 10.3% y/y to 418,000 units. This resulted from a decline in exports to European and U.S. markets. However, exports rose again by 4.4% y/y to 228,000 units in the H1 2016.

In 2014 motorcycle total production in seven countries in Europe increased 4.9% y/y to 511,000 units. Italy, the largest producer in Europe, saw a decline for the eighth year in a row, falling 6.2% to 226,000 units. Production in Germany, the second largest producer in Europe, increased 19.5% in 2014 to 125,000 units.

(Note) Comparison was made without Turkey (164,000 units produced in 2014) and Slovakia (3,000 units produced in 2014), for which sales data has been unavailable since 2014.
