The 2022 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) was hosted from September 14 through September 25, 2022, in Detroit, Michigan, U.S. The 2022 iteration represented the first time that the NAIAS took place since January 2019, as it was scheduled to be moved from its traditional January timeslot to June in 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 exhibitions, with Motor Bella serving as a replacement in 2021. U.S. President Joe Biden attended the 2022 NAIAS and touted the recently signed Inflation Reduction Act, highlighting the development of a charging network spanning 500,000 stations and 53,000 miles. Drawing from Motor Bella, the 2022 NAIAS featured increased interactivity to attract greater public attendance with indoor off-road test tracks, racing simulators and outdoor test drives, even though fewer OEMs developed displays.

While the 2022 NAIAS had fewer debuts compared to 2019, OEMs, including the Detroit Three, placed a greater emphasis on battery electric vehicles. All of GM’s brands displayed fully electric production models or concepts, with Chevrolet showing the Blazer EV and Equinox EV. Other notable models highlighted were the Cadillac Lyriq and Buick Wildcat concept. Ford showcased its Lincoln brand with the L100 and the Star concepts, while Stellantis showed the recently unveiled Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept. Outside the Detroit Three, Toyota and Subaru displayed the Lexus RZ and Subaru Solterra, respectively, while the new Lordstown Endurance was shown as a North American Truck of the Year semifinalist.

The 2022 NAIAS had an increased presence by startups and suppliers with the Automobili-D showcase on the main exhibition floor. Harbinger, a Los Angeles startup focused on producing electric medium-duty commercial vehicles debuted its EV platform at the NAIAS. Startups including Autel Energy, Plug Zen, and WiTricity displayed a variety of charging stations and solutions.

This report is the first of two reports which focuses on the automotive content shown at the 2022 NAIAS. This report highlights the battery electric vehicles shown, primarily from GM, Ford and Stellantis. It also includes information on notable startups showcasing battery electric vehicles and vehicle charging solutions.
