Summary

This report summarizes the worldwide production and sales of motorcycles (motorcycles, scooters, etc.), and provides an overview of the major motorcycle producing countries including China, India, and ASEAN countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The total number of motorcycles produced in the world's major countries in 2021 is estimated to be at the level of 53 million units (estimated from statistics for each country). Global demand for motorcycles in 2021 increased 7.4% year-over-year (y/y) to 47,771,000 units (source: Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (Yamaha)). Asia was up 2.5% to 34,755,000 units, accounting for more than 72.8% of total demand.

In China, both production and sales reached 17.85 million units, the highest level in five years. In India, recovery from the COVID pandemic is slow, and both production and sales were below 20 million units.

Policies to promote the spread of electric motorcycles in India and ASEAN have been put in place, and while major motorcycle manufacturers are introducing electric models, emerging manufacturers are making significant inroads, launching new businesses such as battery replacement services and establishing recharging networks, and actively forming alliances among companies.
