Tokyo Motor Show 2011: European OEMs

Summary

 This Report will outline the foreign (mostly European) OEMs' exhibits in the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show (held from December 3 to 11, 2011). 25 foreign brands of passenger cars, commercial vehicles and motorcycles from 21 overseas OEMs participated in the Show. Highlight will be shed on passenger cars in this report.

 European exhibits were from Daimler, BMW, VW, Porsche, Renault, PSA, and Jaguar Land Rover. With no show by US OEMs in the Tokyo Motor Show, only GM presented a concept model in the Show's themed exhibition. Hyundai exhibited a motor coach, which will be launched in the Japanese market.

 First, this Report will introduce concept cars; next, the models exhibited in SMART MOBILITY CITY 2011 themed exhibition (next generation vehicles and surrounding social systems), and last, their new models and vehicles which will come onto markets. These OEMs showed a wide range of products including futuristic concept cars, new model vehicles with both excellent engine performance and fuel efficiency, EVs (Electric Vehicles), HVs (Hybrid Vehicles), and PHVs (Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles), which eye on the Japanese market, and will be commercially available.

Daimler presents F125! as a preview of 2025 S-Class and Concept A-Class

 Daimler presented F125! as a Mercedes-Benz concept car. This is a fuel cell PHV in the research phase, which previews two generations ahead of the S-Class after 2025. It also presented a concept car of the next A-Class, which will be launched in Europe in 2012.

 The F125! is a research vehicle which hints the direction toward "a large high end car with zero-emission performance," as unveiled in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the automobile invented by Karl Benz. This is a PHV with the newly developed hydrogen storage technology and a lithium-sulfur battery. The F125! employs the all-wheel drive e4MATIC system, a mechanism which controls the torque independently by one motor per each wheel. The F125! previews the two generation ahead of the S-Class after 2025. This PHV has a cruising range of 1000 km.
 The new type hydrogen tank with a capacity of 7.5 kg is in the basic research phase. It ensures a charging pressure low at 30 bar (the conventional technology shows 700 bar), and is integrated into the bodywork. The lithium-sulfur battery with a capacity of 10 kWh, which is also getting through the basic research phase, realizes contactless charging at battery charging stations. Mercedes says that it will double the current energy density to 350 Wh/kg.
Concept A-Class  The Concept A-Class is a blue print concept car of the next A-Class. This is a sporty three-door hatchback, and features a longer hood and a lower silhouette than the current tall and MPV-style model. The Concept A-Class employs front wheel drive, the new two-liter four-cylinder direct injection turbo gasoline engine and the newly developed seven-speed dual clutch transmission. The concept car incorporates advanced systems, such as the radar-based collision warning system, and the COMAND multimedia system with which a smartphone is automatically synchronized. Mercedes-Benz plans to launch the next A-Class in 2012 and 2013 in Europe and Japan, respectively.

BMW exhibits BMW i brand EV and PHV, and MINI sports activity coupe

 BMW highlighted its sub-brand BMW i, which deals EVs and PHVs. The exhibits were the first two car lines of the sub-brand, i.e., the i3 EV concept and the i8 PHV concept. BMW also showcased MINI's seventh model of Paceman concept, a sports activity coupe.

i3 concept  The i3 concept is the first car line of the BMW i brand. It is a rear-wheel drive four-seater, which will be the first production EV for BMW. In the development phase, it was called as Megacity Vehicle. The i3 is equipped with the lithium-ion battery beneath the floor, and a 125 kW motor on the back. It has a cruise range from 130 to 160 km; and accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in less than eight seconds. BMW will start production of the EV from the end of 2013, planning to launch it in major cities all over the globe.
i8 concept  The i8 concept is the second car line of the BMW i brand, which is a 2+2 seat sports car type PHV. It provides driving performance as a sports car with a low fuel consumption comparative to small cars. The motor drives the front wheels and the three-cylinder gasoline engine drives the rear wheels. The lithium-ion battery is housed in the center tunnel. It accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in less than five seconds. It consumes fuel at 2.7 liters/100 km in the European combined mode, and emits CO2 at 66 g/km. BMW plans to launch the PHV at the end of 2013 or the beginning of 2014.

LifeDrive

 The bodywork employed for the i3 and the i8 is called as the LifeDrive Architecture, which consist of two modules. The drive module is an aluminum chassis incorporating a drive system, a battery and a suspension. Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is used for most of the Life Module, which realizes an extraordinarily strong and light passenger cell. The increment in the weight by the battery is nearly nullified by the newly developed architecture and CFRP.

Concept car exhibited by MINI

Paceman concept  The Paceman concept is a concept car of the two-door four-seat Sports Activity Coupe. This is the seventh model of the MINI brand. The Paceman concept is built on the same platform of the MINI Countryman (MINI Crossover in Japan) with increased ground clearance and raised seat position. The concept car is equipped with a 1.6-liter I-4 twin scroll turbo engine, which develops a maximum output of 155 kW and a peak torque of 260 Nm (280 Nm in the over-boost). It was officially decided to produce the model as well as launch it in Japan (schedule not yet determined).

VW showcases a SUV and Coupe blended PHV, Cross Coupe, and Microbus EV, New Bulli

 VW unveiled the PHV Cross Coupe in the Tokyo Motor Show for the first time in the world. The PHV concept illustrates the direction of future SUV designing by VW. The company also showcased New Bulli, an EV concept based on the revived famous model, Microbus.

Cross Coupe  The Cross Coupe is a 4WD PHV concept in which compact SUV and four-door Coupe are blended. This illustrates the direction of future SUV designing by VW. It showcased the concept for the first time in the world. This is the first model which employs the VW's new Modularer Querbaukasten (MQB)or modular transverse-engine kit.
 The Cross Coupe is provided with one engine and two motors. The front part accommodates a direct injection gasoline turbo engine (TS) of 110 kW and a motor of 40 kW, and the real holds a motor of 85 kW. The engine and the front motor drive the front wheels together or separately in the normal drive mode, while the real motor additionally starts driving the rear wheels in the 4WD/EV mode. The entire drive system outputs 195 kW at maximum. The Cross Coupe has a lithium-ion battery of 9.8 kWh in the center tunnel, and cruises 40 km in the EV mode. The fuel economy in the European combined mode is 2.7 liter/100 km and the CO2 emission is 62 g/km.
New Bulli  The New Bulli is an EV concept based on the revived popular model, Microbus. The concept was introduced for the first time in Japan. It is 3990 long, 1750 wide and 1700 high (mm), and accommodates six passengers at maximum. The EV concept adopts an 85 kW electric motor with a peak torque of 270 Nm, and a 40 kWh lithium ion battery. It delivers 140 km/h top speed and accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 11.5 seconds with a cruising range of 300 km. An iPad is housed in the center console removable as a multifunctional touch-screen interface and controller. It serves as a navigation system, an interface for iPad applications, and hands-free phone.

Renault showcases a crossover concept Captur showing its future design strategy

 Renault presented for the first time in Japan the crossover concept Capture showing its new design strategy. The Capture will be equipped with a Euro6 compliant diesel engine under development to suppress CO2 emission to 99 g/km.

Captur  The Captur is a concept car which Renault's new design strategy fits in. This was the first time for Renault to present this concept car in Japan. The new design strategy reflects each phase of the human life cycle. Renault already presented a concept car in which the first phase "fall in love" took the form. The Captur is a sporty crossover in line with the second phase that "two people exploring the world around them." This simple, sensuous and heart-warming style will be applied to future Renault cars.
 The Captur demonstrates its active, agile, powerful and muscular all-terrain cue. The powertrain ensures both driving pleasure and fuel economy in a combination of the Energy dCi 160 twin turbo diesel concept engine (which produces160 hp with a peak torque of 380Nm available from 1,750 rpm) under development and the dual clutch EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) gear box. The model emits CO2 at 99 g/km in the European combined mode.

EV concept cars in themed exhibition - Smart Mobility City 2011

 Daimler showed a smart brand EV which will be launched globally from spring 2012 (the advanced EV concept smart forvision, which was exhibited in the Daimler's booth, will also be introduced here).

 VW showcased the one-seat EV concept NILS and the Golf-based EV to be available in 2013.

 GM offers a future city dwellers' transportation device, the networked EV concept Chevrolet EN-V for the themed exhibition.

 The smart fortwo electric drive is the third generation of smart fortwo EV. It will be commercially available in 30 countries worldwide from spring 2012. The release in Japan is expected to be in the middle of 2012. smart plans to produce a five-digit number of them at the Hambach plant in France. It employs a Deutsche Accumotive-made lithium-ion battery of 17.6 kWh and an EM-motive-made motor of a 55 kW peak motor power. They produce a 120 km/h top speed, accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in less than 13 seconds, and has a cruise range of 140 km.
smart forvision  Daimler and BASF, a German chemicals giant, coupled together to develop this advanced EV concept smart forvision. The design of the concept car focuses on energy efficiency, temperature control and light weight.
* Energy efficiency: Hexagon-shaped transparent organic solar-panels are mounted on the roof to supply produced power to the information and ventilation systems. It also employs an energy saving transparent LEDs.
* Temperature control: Newly developed polymer film on the windows reflects infrared and a high performance heat insulation material are laid on the car body panels to prevent temperature changes in the ambient air from transmitting to the passenger cell.
* Light weight: All plastic wheels are employed to reduce the weight by 30% at maximum from the existing wheel. For the load bearing parts such as chassis, reinforced fiber plastic is employed instead of the metal.

VW NILS  The NILS is a one-seat EV concept suggested and developed by VW for commuters in big cities under the support by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development. The basic part of the body is made from aluminum, while the two wing doors hold the multilayered polycarbonate windows. It is compact and light with a size of 3.04 m long, 1.39 m wide (the body width is 0.86 m) and 1.2 m deep, and a weight of 460 kg.
 It incorporates a 19 kg motor which generates a rated power of 15 kW and a peak power of 25kW, and a 5.3 kWh lithium ion battery. The battery powers the EV to a top speed of 130 km and accelerates zero to 100 km/h in 11 seconds. The cruise range is 65 km. It requires two hours to charge the vehicle (230 V).

 The Golf Blue-e-motion is an EV concept unveiled in May 2010. The front engine room accommodates a 26.5 kWh lithium-ion battery and an 85 kW motor. It accelerates from zero to 100 km in 11.8 seconds. There are three driving modes to control comfort, driving performance and cruise range. It will be commercially available in 2013.

GM Chevrolet EN-V  The Chevrolet EN-V is a next two-seat EV concept. The base EN-V was unveiled by GM and SAIC in the Expo 2010 Shanghai China. The EN-V was presented again under the Chevrolet brand in October 2011. This was the first time for GM to show Chevrolet EN-V in Japan. The EN-V stands for Electric Networked-Vehicle.
 It is predicted that sixty percent of eight billion of the world population will live in cities in 2030. In consequence, it would be necessary to provide transportation devices to address traffic jams and environmental problems. The EN-V is 1.5-m long and 1.45-m wide with a footprint of 3 square meters (a typical microcar occupies 10 square meters). It is equipped with a 3.2 kWh lithium-ion battery and cruises 50 km per charge. The EN-V features autonomous driving by adopting the communication system between cars, the distance detection technology, and GPS.

Daimler Group showcases M-Benz B-Class and M-Class, and Maybach 57S.

 Daimler showcased new Mercedes-Benz models of the compact hatchback B-Class and the premium SUV M-Class, and a luxury brand Maybach model, the high-end large passenger car Maybach 57 S.

B-Class  The B-Class is a new compact hatchback launched in November 2011 in Europe. The height of the model is decreased by 48 mm than the old model, and the seat height from the ground is lowered by 86 mm to realize a dynamic form. The Cd value, an air resistance coefficient is the highest 0.26 in the class.
 The powertrain was newly developed for the model. It comes with a direct-injection four-cylinder 1.6-liter gasoline turbo engine or 1.8-liter diesel turbo engine. The six-speed MT also comes as standard equipment, while the seven-speed dual clutch transmission is available as an option. The idling stop mechanism is also standard equipment. The features of the B-Class include the radar type collision alarm system which is installed for the first time for the compact class as well as the PRE-SAFE system, a preventive safety system.
M-Class  The M-Class is a new premium SUV launched in November 2011 in Europe. It will come onto the Japanese market in summer 2012. Compared to the old model, the M-Class lineup has a better average fuel economy by 25% thanks to the implemented newest engine and the class-leading Cd value at 0.32. The M-Class equipped with the 3.0-liter V6CDI diesel engine and the AdBlue system (Urea Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to reduce NOx) satisfies the emission gas standard Euro 6, which will officially go effective in 2014. The model equipped with the 3.5-liter V6 direct injection gasoline engine meets Euro 5.

New model exhibited by Maybach

Maybach 57 S  The Maybach 57 S is an ultra-luxurious passenger car. It is built on the 5.7-m long Maybach 57, and incorporates a high performance engine. The interior and the exterior emphasize dynamic characteristics of the car. It uses the six-liter V12 gasoline engine which produces 463 kW available at 4800-5100rpm, 1000 Nm with 2000 to 4000 rpm. The model can sprint from zero to 100 km in 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 275 km/h.

NOTE: According to the announcement in December 2011, Daimler will withdraw from the luxury brand Maybach by 2013. Daimler will pass the model to the M-Benz brand S-Class, planning to present three types of new S-Class concept cars in 2013. Maybach revived as a rival to Rolls Royce in 2002 for the first time in about 60 years, although sales hovered low.

BMW/MINI: BMW presents the ActiveHybrid 5 and the clean diesel car X5

 BMW presented a full hybrid version of 5 Series, ActiveHybrid 5 for the first time in the world. It also showed the X5 xDrive35d, which will be marketed in Japan for the first time as a BMW's clean diesel car. It also showcased the MINI Coupe from the MINI brand, which has been recently launched in Japan.

ActiveHybrid 5  The ActiveHybrid 5 is a full hybrid model, which made world debut. The model employed a three-liter straight-six direct injection twin scroll turbo gasoline engine with a maximum power of 306 ps and an electric motor with a power of 55 ps. The total output power is 340 ps. It can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. It has a 675-Wh lithium-ion battery, which produces a top speed of 60 km/h in the EV mode, and enables it to travel 4 km at an average speed of 35 km/h.
 The ActiveHybrid 5 realizes a fuel economy of 6.4 liters/100 km in the European combined mode, and a CO2 emission of 149 g/km, which is improved by about 20% compared to the gasoline engine 535i sedan. The ActiveHybrid 5 will be launched all over the world in spring 2012.

BluePerformance
 The X5 xDrive35d Blue Performance will be launched in Japan in spring 2012. BMW for the first time will introduce to the Japanese market the clean diesel vehicle which meets the post new long-term emission regulation. The model is equipped with a 3.0-liter straight-six turbo diesel engine which produces a 180 kW maximum power with a 540 Nm peak torque, and eight-speed AT. To clean emission gas, the model uses the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system and the DPF (Diesel Particular Filter). It achieves a fuel economy of 11.0 km/liter in the JC08 mode, up by 30% compared to the 3.0-liter straight-six gasoline engine equipped model.

NOTE: The BMW TwinPower Turbo Engine is a technology package including a variable intake and exhaust mechanism and a direct injection system for the engine (two power-related technologies) and the efficient turbocharging technology (turbo). BMW employs these technologies for newly developed engines to enhance the engine efficiency.

New model exhibited by MINI

MINI Coupe  The Mini Coupe is the first two-seater three-box car of MINI, and the fifth model of the brand. It is lower than the Mini hatchback by 52 mm, and features the rounded roof, so-called "Helmet Roof." When the traveling velocity exceeds 80 km/h, the electric rear spoiler will stand up to suppress the lift force to stabilize aerodynamics.

VW/Audi/Porsche: VW Passat Alltruck and Audi A1 Sportback make world-debut

 VW's station wagon Passat Alltruck made world debut in the Tokyo Motor Show. This model offers crossover abilities as well. VW also presented The Beetle for the first time in Japan. Newest technologies are implemented in the New Beetle, while it reflects the shape of the first Beetle.

 Audi presented the A1 Sportback for the first time in the world, which is a five-door hatchback version of the A1. The Japan-debut was the hybrid models of the medium SUV Q5 and the upper medium class A6.

 Porsche showed its traditional sports cars of the new 911 Carrera and Carrera S and the new four-door sports car Panamera GTS.

Passat Alltruck  The Passat Alltruck is a new derivative Passat to close the gap between the current Passat Variant station wagon and the Tiguan SUV. The Passat Alltruck made world debut in the Tokyo Motor Show. It is a station wagon version, but it offers crossover abilities. The ground clearance is higher by 30 mm compared to that of the Passat Variant. The Passat Alltruck employs the off-road drive program to set programs for the safety equipment and the transmission for off-road use for the first time as a passenger car.
 For the powertrain, the model offers four types of direct injection turbo engines (two per each gasoline and diesel engine). The 4MOTION four-wheel drive system and the DSG (dual clutch transmission) come standard with some grades of the model. It will be launched in Europe after spring 2012.
The Beetle  The Beetle is a new model of the Beetle released in Berlin, New York and Shanghai at the same time in April 2011. The Beetle made Japan debut in Tokyo Motor Show. The extended roofline makes the model true to the origin. The Japan-version model is equipped with 1.2-liter direct injection gasoline engine TSI which produces a maximum power of 77 kW with a peak torque 175 Nm, and the seven-speed DSG (dual clutch transmission). In the 10-15 mode, the fuel economy realizes 17.2 km/liter.

New models exhibited by Audi

A1 Sportback  The A1 Sportback is a five-door hatchback version of the A1. It made world-debut in the Tokyo Motor Show. The model will be launched in Europe in the beginning of 2012. It targets young city dwellers. The A1 Sportback has similar design, light body structure and dimensions to the three-door model, but it has a bit larger cabin space. There are six types of four-cylinder engines of 63 to 136 kW (three types per gasoline and diesel engines). Some versions are combined with the seven-speed S tronic (Dual Clutch Transmission). The Audi Connect, Audi's new online service, will be available.
Audi Q5 hybrid quattro  The Audi Q5 Hybrid Quattro is a full hybrid model of the premium midsize SUV Q5. It made debut in Japan. It will be launched in Europe and the US at the end of 2011. This is Audi's first hybrid model. It incorporates the 2.0 TFSI engine which develops 115 kW with 350 Nm, a motor which develops 40 kW with 211 Nm, and a lithium-ion battery. The system outputs 180 kW and 480 Nm at maximum The hybrid model runs at a top speed of 100 km/h and travels 3 km at a constant velocity of 60 km/h in the EV mode. The fuel economy is 6.9 liters/100 km and CO2 emission is 159 g/km in the European combined mode.
Audi A6 hybrid  The Audi A6 hybrid is a hybrid model of the premium upper medium class A6 which will constitute a core product of Audi. Audi plans to start mass-production in 2012. The A6 hybrid uses the same hybrid system as the Q5 hybrid quattro.

New models exhibited by Porsche

911 Carrera/
Carrera S
 The 911 Carrera and Carrera S are the new models of the traditional sports car 911 series. They were released for the first time in Japan. The wheelbase is longer by 100 mm than the old model, while they are lighter by 45 kg thanks to the newly developed aluminum and steel light body.
 The fuel economy is improved. The CO2 emission is 194 g/km from the 911 Carrera equipped with the 3.4-liter horizontally opposed engine (350 ps) and the optional seven-speed Porsche Doppel Kupplung (PDK) (dual clutch transmission). Compared to the old model, the 911 Carrera S consumes fuel less by 15%, although it produces more power by 15 ps with the 3.8-liter horizontally opposed engine (400 ps).
Panamera GTS  The Panamera GTS is a new four-door sports car. Major changes include the upgraded brake, a 10-mm lower car height and the sporty-tuned chassis with the air suspension. The 4.8-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine (430 ps), the PDK and the 4WD system realize a sprint of zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. The top speed is 288 km/h.

Renault showcases Kangoo Image and Wind Gordini

 Renault showcased the Kangoo Image on the new Kangoo, and the Wind Gordini, which is a Gordini-touch small sporty roadster.

Kangoo Image  The Kangoo Image is a model created by making the interior and the exterior of the Kangoo stylish. It will be launched in Japan in 2012. Its base model, new Kangoo, features a playful design and functionality, a wide cabin for five adult passengers, a large cargo space (when the seatbacks are upright, it is 660 liters; and when the front and rear passenger seatbacks are folded flat, it is 2,866 liters).
Wind Gordini  The Wind Gordini is a compact two-seat coupe roadster with the Gordini design-specific blue body and white stripes. The model will be launched in Japan in 2012. It is equipped with a power-retractable hardtop which opens and closes in 12 seconds.

Peugeot/Citroen: A diesel hybrid Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 comes to Tokyo

 Peugeot showcased the 3008 Hybrid4, the world first mass production diesel hybrid car, and the Peugeot flagship model 508.

 Citroen presented the second and the third models from the luxury model series, DS line, Crossover DS4 and the DS5 where Gran Turismo and Wagon are married.

3008 Hybrid4  According to Peugeot, the 3008 Hybrid4 is the world first mass production model as a diesel hybrid car. It made debut in Japan. Peugeot plans to launch the model in Europe from the end of 2011. It is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine which produces 120 kW with 300 Nm to drive the front wheels, and with a 27 kW motor to drive the rear wheels. It employs a nickel hydride battery. The 4WD system electrically controls front and rear wheels. A maximum output of the system is 200 ps. The fuel economy is 3.8 liters/100 km and CO2 emission is 99 g/km in the European combined cycle mode. Peugeot is considering introducing it into Japan.
508  The 508 is a Peugeot's flagship model which was released in Europe and Japan respectively in spring and July 2011. This is a successor model, where the medium size Peugeot 407 and the large 607 are integrated. The 508 illustrates the new design direction of Peugeot. The showcased model is equipped with a 1.6-liter straight-four direct injection gasoline turbo engine which produces 115 kW with 240 Nm, and a six-speed AT. The fuel economies in 10-15 mode are 11.0 km/liter on the sedan, and 10.8 km/liter on the station wagon.

DS5  The DS5 is the third model of the DS line and will be launched in Europe and Japan respectively at the beginning and the latter half of 2012. It made debut in Japan this time. The DS line is a luxury model series, which is bold and crystallizes Citroen's creativity and innovation. The DS5 has a Gran Turismo and a station wagon-fused style. Citroen will make gasoline/diesel engine as well as diesel hybrid system available ( introduction of the diesel hybrid model into Japan is not yet determined).
DS4  The DS4 is the second model of the DS line and was launched in Europe and Japan respectively in May and September 2011. This is a crossover model with a coupe-looking body line, and a higher eye-point like SUVs. The Japanese model incorporates a 1.6-liter straight-four gasoline engine, and a six-speed AT or six-speed MT.

Jaguar and Land Rover exhibit the new XKR-S realizing 300 km/h and Range Rover Evoque

 Jaguar showcased the new XKR-S, the fastest and the most powerful ever in its brand history. Land Rover showed the Range Rover series compact SUV Evoque and the Evoque Coupe.

XKR-S  Jaguar is the fastest and the most powerful new model in the Jaguar's history. It made debut in Japan. The model will be launched from December 2011. A top speed of 300 km/h, and a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds are realized by an all-aluminum 5.0-liter V8 direct injection super charged engine which produces 550 ps with 680 Nm, a fully revised suspension, and a newly designed body of which aerodynamics is improved.

 The Range Rover Evoque and Evoque Coupe are the Range Rover Series premium compact SUVs. It was revealed for the first time in Japan. It will be launched in Japan in March 2012. The five-door Evoque and the three-door Evoque Coupe with a 30 mm lower roofline constitute a product lineup. They are provided with the full time 4WD system and the terrain response function to run on any roads and under any weather. It is equipped with a newly developed two-liter straight-four direct injection turbo engine which produces 240 ps with 340 Nm.

Hyundai presents the new large tourist coach Universe

 Hyundai Motor presented the new large tourist coach Universe for the first time in Japan. The exterior and the interior are renewed, and advanced operation support and safety devices are added.

 The Universe is a new large tourist coach which is sold in Japan. The new Universe made debut in Japan. It accommodates 29 passengers. The Universe uses aero spoiler with an excellent aerodynamic character, has renewed fog lamps and grill, and repositions the headlamps. Hyundai developed new 2 x 1 high grade independent seats for the model. It employs LED line light for the coach for the first time in Japan.
 As for the operation support equipment, the Universe employs the multi-function display to support drivers for safety operation, and the ECO drive system to show an economical driving condition on the indicator. For the safety equipment, Hyundai developed a new electrically controlled air suspension to increase driving stability, and provided a hill start aid.
