Summary
Sensing and control technologies are the key elements of autonomous driving. This report summarizes information on radar and control technologies collected at various exhibitions, and introduces the current state of technology development that will lead to the practical application of Level 4 or higher automated driving, which is currently stagnant for passenger cars.
Regarding radar-related technologies, this report will focus on the development status of SoCs (System-on-a-Chip) in particular, from two perspectives: promotion of widespread use and high-performance alternatives to LiDAR.
Regarding control-related technologies, this report will present new initiatives that do not rely on HD maps (high definition maps) or LiDAR, which are required for Level 2 (L2) and above. In control technology, there is a trend toward L4 autonomous driving, in which control rules are established from the very beginning to autonomously adapt to traffic flow, rather than simply improving functionality from Level 2. One of its features is that it does not assume the use of HD maps, and differences in control are also reflected in differences in sensor configuration; in the case of autonomous control, the sensor configuration is generally simple and some do not require LiDAR. Focusing on automated driving control that does not rely on HD maps, this report will also introduce technologies related to control development tools and infrastructure coordination system development tools.
