History

Jun. 1896	Established as Yokohama Electric Cable Manufacturing Company.
Apr. 1920	Established Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. by consolidating Furukawa Mining Industry (currently Furukawa Co.) and Nikko Copper Electrolyzing Refinery (currently Nikko Works).
Dec. 1921	Acquired Kyushu Electric Cable Company located in the Moji District of Kita-Kyushu City, renaming it Kyushu Electric Cable Works. (This plant is currently the Kyushu Plant of Furukawa Electric Industrial Cable Co., Ltd.)
Nov. 1938	Osaka Copper Works established in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture. (Previously named Osaka Works and currently is the copper-tubing business.)
May 1949	Listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
Sep. 1950	Spun off the battery business into a separate company Furukawa Battery Co., Ltd.
Sep. 1958	Established Hiratsuka Electric Cable Works in Hiratsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture. (It’s currently Hiratsuka Works.)
March 1961	Established and started operations at Chiba Cable Works in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture.
March 1971	Established Mie Works in Kameyama, Mie Prefecture.
Aug. 1972	Listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange
April 1981	Absorbed the operations of Furukawa Metal Industry, in order to better plan future developments as a general, non-ferrous manufacture.
Feb. 1987	Completed Yokohama R&D Lab in Nishi-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture.
Oct.1993	Merged the operations of Furukawa Aluminum and Fukui Rolling Company, in order to consolidate sales and production functions, and strengthen and expand the business.
Nov. 2001	Acquired the optical-fiber-cable business of Lucent Technologies (which is currently Acatel-Lucent) based in the USA, and named the business OFS Fitel, LLC.
Oct. 2003	Turned its Sky Alumimum Co., Ltd. (the light metals business) into Furukawa-Sky Aluminum Corporation. (The company is currently named UACJ).
Jan. 2005	Transferred the sales function of its electric-power business to Viscas Corporation.
Dec. 2005	Listed Furukawa Sky (currently UACJ) on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
Feb. 2007	Listed the stocks of FCM Co., Ltd. on the Nippon New Market Hercules Section of the Osaka Stock Exchange. (In 2018, due to the Company’s selling off FCM’s shares, FCM is no longer included within the Furukawa Group.)
Mar. 2012	Acquired Totoku Electric’s shares, which were listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, through a public offering by Totoku to raise capital. As a result, Totoku became a consolidated subsidiary.
Oct. 2013	Furukawa Sky and Sumitomo Light Metal Industries, Ltd. merged and formed UACJ, which is listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange and is the Company’s consolidated subsidiary based on the equity method of accounting.
Apr. 2015	Took over the non-Japan operations of the electric-power-cable business of Viscas Corp., a consolidated subsidiary based on the equity method of accounting.
Oct. 2016	Took over the Japan operations of the electric-power-cable business of Viscas Corp., a consolidated subsidiary based on the equity method of accounting.
Apr. 2020	Turned the copper-tubing business into Daishin P & T, which as a result became a wholly owned subsidiary.
Oct. 2020	Reorganized the coil business, with Essex Furukawa Magnet Wire LLC taking over the business of large-size coils.
Apr. 2022	Moved from the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange to the Prime Market due to the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s reorganization.
Dec. 2022	Transferred it shares held in Totoku Electric Co., Ltd. (currently Totoku), removing it as a consolidated subsidiary.
