However, with the rollout of vaccines and clarity over our new relationship with the EU, we must make 2021 a year of recovery. With manufacturers bringing record numbers of electrified vehicles to market over the coming months, we will work with government to encourage drivers to make the switch, while promoting investment in our globally-renowned manufacturing base - recharging the market, industry and economy."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Compared with the spring lockdown, manufacturers, dealers and consumers were all better prepared to adjust to constrained trading conditions. But with GBP 1.3 billion worth of new car revenue lost in November alone, the importance of showroom trading to the UK economy is evident and we must ensure they remain open in any future Covid restrictions. More positively, with a vaccine now approved, the business and consumer confidence on which this sector depends can only improve, giving the industry more optimism for the turn of the year."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "When showrooms shut, demand drops, so there is a real danger that with England today entering a second lockdown, both dealers and manufacturers could face temporary closure. What is not in doubt, however, is that the entire industry now faces an even tougher end to the year as businesses desperately try to manage resources, stock, production and cashflow in the penultimate month before the inevitable upheaval of Brexit. Keeping showrooms open - some of the most Covid-secure retail environments around - would help cushion the blow but, more than ever, we need a tariff-free deal with the EU to provide some much-needed respite for an industry that is resilient but massively challenged."

Of the five most popular vehicles in September, 10,553 Vauxhall Corsas; 9,545 Ford Fiestas; 8,085 Mercedes-Benz A-Classes; 7,417 VW Polos and 6,788 VW Golfs were sold.
Compared to last September, gasoline-engine car sales decreased by 20.9% to 176,532 units (53.8% share), diesel-engine car sales decreased 38.4% to 46,996 units (14.3% share), and alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) sales increased 139.0% to 104,513 units (31.9% share).
In September, private car sales decreased 1.1% to 161,363 units (49.2% share), fleet sales decreased 5.8% to 159,081 units (48.5% share), and sales to businesses decreased 31.9% to 7,597 units (2.3% share).
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons increased 26.4% this September to 52,096 units.
Sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons decreased 36.1% to 745 units in September.
Sales of taxis decreased 25.9% to 200 units in September.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "During a torrid year, the automotive industry has demonstrated incredible resilience, but this is not a recovery. Despite the boost of a new registration plate, new model introductions and attractive offers, this is still the poorest September since the two-plate system was introduced in 1999. Unless the pandemic is controlled and economy-wide consumer and business confidence rebuilt, the short-term future looks very challenging indeed."

In August, private car sales decreased 1.7% to 39,833 units (45.7% share), fleet sales decreased 5.5% to 45,943 units (52.7% share), and sales to businesses decreased 57.9% to 1,450 units (1.7% share).
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons decreased 16.1% this August to 19,407 units.
Sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons decreased 11.8% to 396 units in August.
Sales of taxis decreased 76.2% to 35 units in August.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "The decline is disappointing, following some brief optimism in July. However, given August is typically one the new car market’s quietest months, it’s important not to draw too many conclusions from these figures alone. With the all-important plate change month just around the corner, September is likely to provide a better barometer. As the nation takes steps to return to normality, protecting consumer confidence will be critical to driving a recovery."

UK passenger car sales increase 11.3% in July
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on August 5, UK passenger car sales increased 11.3% to 174,887 units in July 2020.
Year-to-date sales decreased 41.9%, with 828,389 cars registered in the first seven months of 2020.
July sales for Ford increased 10.4% to 18,814 units (10.8% market share), Volkswagen sales increased 2.9% to 15,617 units (8.9% share), while Audi sales increased 16.4% to 12,017 units (6.9% share).
BMW sales increased 24.4% to 11,446 units (6.5% share) and Mercedes-Benz sales decreased 14.9% to 10,254 units (5.9% share).
Of the five most popular vehicles in July, 5,455 Vauxhall Corsas; 5,421 Ford Fiestas; 4,981 Ford Focuses; 3,936 VW Golfs; and 3,922 Mercedes-Benz A-Classes were sold.
Compared to last July, gasoline-engine car sales increased by 0.3% to 101,392 units (58.0% share), diesel-engine car sales decreased 25.9% to 28,844 units (16.5% share), and alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) sales increased 159.2% to 44,651 units (25.5% share).
In July, private car sales increased 20.4% to 79,929 units (45.7% share), fleet sales increased 5.2% to 91,857 units (52.5% share), and sales to businesses decreased 11.8% to 3,101 units (1.8% share).
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons increased 7.1% this July to 27,701 units.
Sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons increased 15.9% to 634 units in July.
Sales of taxis decreased 74.9% to 56 units in July.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "July’s figures are positive, with a boost from demand pent up from earlier in the year and some attractive offers meaning there are some very good deals to be had. We must be cautious, however, as showrooms have only just fully reopened nationwide and there is still much uncertainty about the future. By the end of September we should have a clearer picture of whether or not this is a long-term trend. Although this month’s figures provide hope, the market remains fragile in the face of possible future spikes and localised lockdowns as well as, sadly, probable job losses across the economy. The next few weeks will be crucial in showing whether or not we are on the road to recovery."

UK passenger car sales decrease 34.9% in June

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on July 6, UK passenger car sales decreased 34.9% to 145,377 units in June 2020.
Year-to-date sales decreased 48.5%, with 653,502 cars registered in the first half of 2020.
June sales for Ford decreased 38.2% to 13,622 units (9.4% market share), Volkswagen sales decreased 39.3% to 12,431 units (8.6% share), while Toyota sales increased 2.7% to 11,709 units (8.1% share).
BMW sales decreased 46.8% to 10,635 units (7.3% share) and Mercedes-Benz sales decreased 36.0% to 9,569 units (6.6% share).
Of the five most popular vehicles in June, 4,528 Vauxhall Corsas; 4,386 Ford Fiestas; 4,200 Toyota Yarises; 3,551 Ford Focuses; and 3,400 MINIs were sold.
Compared to last June, diesel-engine car sales decreased by 59.8% to 23,011 units (15.8% share), gasoline-engine car sales decreased 39.9% to 87,896 units (60.5% share), and alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) sales increased 73.7% to 34,470 units (23.7% share).
In June, private car sales decreased 19.2% to 72,827 units (50.1% share), fleet sales decreased 45.2% to 69,798 units (47.8% share), and sales to businesses decreased 52.6% to 3,052 units (2.1% share).
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons decreased 24.8% this June to 30,041 units.
Sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons decreased 63.7% to 291 units in June.
Sales of taxis decreased 80.2% to 39 units in June.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "While it’s welcome to see demand rise above the rock-bottom levels we saw during lockdown, this is not a recovery and barely a restart. Many of June’s registrations could be attributed to customers finally being able to collect their pre-pandemic orders, and appetite for significant spending remains questionable. The government must boost the economy, help customers feel safer in their jobs and in their spending and give businesses the confidence to invest in their fleets. Otherwise it runs the risk of losing billions more in revenue from this critical sector at a time when the public purse needs it more than ever."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "After a second month of shutdown and the inevitable yet devastating impact on the market, this week’s re-opening of dealerships is a pivotal moment for the entire industry and the thousands of people whose jobs depend on it. Customers keen to trade up into the latest, cutting-edge new cars are now able to return to showrooms and early reports suggest there is good business given the circumstances, although it is far too early to tell how demand will pan out over the coming weeks and months. Restarting this market is a crucial first step in driving the recovery of Britain’s critical car manufacturers and supply chain, and to supporting the wider economy. Ensuring people have the confidence to invest in the latest vehicles will not only help them get on the move safely, but these new models will also help address some of the environmental challenges the UK faces in the long term."

Sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons decreased 46.7% to 308 units in April.
Sales of taxis decreased 94.9% to 9 units in April.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said " With the UK’s showrooms closed for the whole of April, the market’s worst performance in living memory is hardly surprising. These figures, however, still make for exceptionally grim reading, not least for the hundreds of thousands of people whose livelihoods depend on the sector. A strong new car market supports a healthy economy and as Britain starts to plan for recovery, we need car retail to be in the vanguard. Safely restarting this most critical sector and revitalising what will, inevitably, be subdued demand will be key to unlocking manufacturing and accelerating the UK’s economic regeneration. "

UK passenger car sales decrease 44.4% in March
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on April 6, UK passenger car sales decreased 44.4% to 254,684 units in March 2020 due to coronavirus pandemic.
Year-to-date sales decreased 31.0%, with 483,557 cars registered in the first three months of 2020.

Mercedes-Benz sales in March decreased 49.4% to 16,981 units (6.7% share) and Audi sales decreased 41.6% to 16,424 units (6.4% share).
Of the five most popular vehicles in March, 7,103 Volkswagen Golfs; 6,687 Ford Fiestas; 6,019 MINIs; 5,985 Ford Focuses; and 5,907 Nissan Qashqais were sold.
Compared to last March, diesel-engine car sales decreased by 61.9% to 44,796 units (17.6% share), gasoline-engine car sales decreased 49.9% to 153,025 units (60.1% share), and alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) sales increased 61.5% to 56,863 units (22.3% share).
In March, private car sales decreased 40.4% to 132,281 units (51.9% share), fleet sales decreased 47.4% to 117,557 units (47.4% share), and sales to businesses decreased 61.1% to 4,846 units (1.9% share).
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons decreased 54.3% this March to 30,247 units.
Sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons decreased 20.6% to 901 units in March.
Sales of taxis decreased 24.9% to 193 units in March.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "With the country locked down in crisis mode for a large part of March, this decline will come as no surprise. Despite this being the lowest March since we moved to the bi-annual plate change system, it could have been worse had the significant advanced orders placed for the new 20 plate not been delivered in the early part of the month. We should not, however, draw long term conclusions from these figures other than this being a stark realisation of what happens when economies grind to a halt. How long the market remains stalled is uncertain, but it will reopen and the products will be there. In the meantime, we will continue to work with government to do all we can to ensure the thousands of people employed in this sector are ready for work and Britain gets back on the move."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Another month of decline for the new car market is especially concerning at a time when fleet renewal is so important in the fight against climate change. Next week’s Budget is the Chancellor’s opportunity to reverse this trend by restoring confidence to the market and showing that government is serious about delivering on its environmental ambitions. Industry has invested in the technology, with a huge influx of new zero- and ultra-low emission models coming to market in 2020, and we now need government to match this with a comprehensive package of incentives and infrastructure spending to accelerate demand. To drive the transition to zero emission motoring, we need carrots, not sticks - as the evidence shows, talk of bans and penalties only means people hang on to their older, more polluting vehicles for longer. It’s time for a change of approach, which means encouraging the consumer to invest in the cleanest new car that best suits their needs. If that is to be electric, government must take bold action to make these vehicles more affordable and as convenient to recharge as their petrol and diesel equivalents are to refuel."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "The new car market is a key driver of the UK’s overall economy, so another month of decline is unsettling. Consumer confidence is not returning to the market and will not be helped by government’s decision to add further confusion and instability by moving the goalposts on the end of sale of internal combustion engine cars. While ambition is understandable, as we must address climate change and air quality concerns, blanket bans do not help short-term consumer confidence. To be successful, government must lead the transition with an extensive and appropriately funded package of fiscal incentives, policies and investment to drive demand. We want to deliver air quality and environmental improvements now but need a strong market to do so."
