BMW sales increased 2.9% to 111,734 units (5.9% share), and Toyota sales increased 7.5% to 109,864 units (5.8% share).

Overall, BEVs accounted for one in six new cars registered in 2023, with the majority taken by business and fleet buyers who benefit from compelling tax incentives. In contrast, one in 11 private buyers chose a BEV. Since the end of the Plug-in Car Grant in June 2022, the UK is the only major European market with no consumer BEV purchase incentives – but it is now also the only market with mandated minimum targets for new ZEV registrations.

UK passenger car sales increase 25.8% in June
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on July 5, UK passenger car sales increased 25.8% to 177,266 units in June 2023. Year-to-date sales increased 18.4% with 949,720 cars registered in the first six months of 2023.
June sales for VW increased 30.2% to 15,185 units (8.6% market share), Ford sales increased 49.2% to 14,744 units (8.3% share) while Audi sales increased 59.4% to 12,235 units (6.9% share). BMW sales increased 22.5% to 11,600 units (6.5% share) and Vauxhall sales decreased 0.4% to 9,927 units (5.6% share).
The best-selling cars in June 2023 were Tesla Model Y (5,539 units), Ford Puma (5,453 units), Vauxhall Corsa (4,146 units), Hyundai Tucson (3,588 units) and Nissan Juke (3,256 units).
Compared to last June, gasoline-engine car sales increased 13.5% to 70,367 units (39.7% share), EV increased 39.4% to 31,700 units (17.9% share), gasoline MHEV increased 53.4% to 28,527 units (16.1% share), PHEV increased 65.5% to 12,770 units (7.2% share), HEV increased 40.1% to 20,991 units (11.8% share), diesel MHEV decreased 3.3% to 6,690 units (3.8% share), and diesel-engine car sales decreased 22.3% to 6,221 units (3.5% share).
The June performance marks the 11th consecutive month of growth as the industry gradually overcomes the pandemic-induced supply chain shortage. With waiting times easing and pent-up demand being met, the sector is a rare bright spot in a gloomy economic landscape even though overall market volumes remain below pre-pandemic levels.
In June, private car sales increased 14.8% to 79,798 units (45.0% share), fleet sales increased 37.9% to 92,699 units (52.3% share), and businesses sales increased 12.7% to 4,769 units (2.7% share).

UK passenger car sales increase 11.6% in April
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on May 4, UK passenger car sales increased 11.6% to 132,990 units in April 2023.
Year-to-date sales increased 16.9% with 627,250 cars registered in the first four months of 2023. As supply chain pressures have begun to ease, the overall market is the best start to a year since the pandemic. This has led to an upward revision of the quarterly market outlook, the first positive revision since 2021, with 1.83 million new car registrations expected in 2023, up from 1.79 million anticipated in January. That puts expected market growth this year at 13.5%, which would be the best percentage gain since 1983.
April sales for VW increased 60.7% to 11,758 units (8.8% market share), Audi sales increased 15.4% to 11,379 units (8.6% share) while Ford sales increased 2.3% to 10,291 units (7.7% share).
Kia sales increased 4.6% to 7,935 units (6.0% share) while Vauxhall sales increased 29.8% to 7,845 units (5.9% share).
The best-selling cars in April 2023 were Ford Puma (3,570 units), Vauxhall Corsa (3,203 units), Kia Sportage (3,073 units), Hyundai Tucson (2,911 units) and Audi A3 (2,548 units).
Compared to last April, gasoline-engine car sales increased 4.1% to 56,885 units (42.8% share), EV increased 59.1% to 20,522 units (15.4% share), gasoline MHEV increased 9.7% to 20,390 units (15.3% share), HEV increased 7.7% to 15,026 units (11.3% share), PHEV increased 33.3% to 8,595 units (6.5% share), diesel-engine car sales decreased 13.4% to 5,825 units (4.4% share), and diesel MHEV decreased 2.9% to 5,747 units (4.3% share).
In April, private car sales decreased 5.5% to 61,342 units (46.1% share), fleet sales increased 33.1% to 68,537 units (51.5% share) and businesses sales increased 13.3% to 3,111 units (2.3% share).
SMMT is less optimistic about growth in demand for BEVs, downgrading their expected 2023 market share from 19.7% to 18.4%, with high energy costs and insufficient charging infrastructure anticipated to soften demand. The latest outlook for 2024, meanwhile, suggests that 22.6% of new car registrations will be BEVs, a downward revision from the 23.3% forecast in January. With a zero emission vehicle mandate due to come into effect next year, greater and faster investment in infrastructure, and more incentives to encourage purchase are essential to drive consumer confidence and accelerate uptake.
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons increased 4.9% to 22,665 units, sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons decreased 31.4% to 300 units while sales of taxis increased 77.5% to 197 units in April.
