Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said “It’s been another desperately disappointing year for the car industry as Covid continues to cast a pall over any recovery. Manufacturers continue to battle myriad challenges, with tougher trading arrangements, accelerating technology shifts and, above all, the global semiconductor shortage which is decimating supply. Despite the challenges, the undeniable bright spot is the growth in electric car uptake. A record-breaking year for the cleanest, greenest vehicles is testament to the investment made by the industry over the past decade and the inherent attractiveness of the technology. The models are there, with two of every five new car models now able to be plugged in, drivers have the widest choice ever and industry is working hard to overcome Covid-related supply constraints. The biggest obstacle to our shared net zero ambitions is not product availability, however, but cost and charging infrastructure. Recent cuts to incentives and home charging grants should be reversed and we need to boost the roll out of public on-street charging with mandated targets, providing every driver, wherever they live, with the assurance they can charge where they want and when they want.”

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT, said, "What looks like a positive performance belies the underlying weakness of the market. Demand is there, with a slew of new, increasingly electrified, models launched but the global shortage of semiconductors continues to bedevil production and therefore new car registrations. The industry is working flat out to overcome these issues and fulfil orders, but disruption is likely to last into next year, compounding the need for customers to place orders early. The continued acceleration of electrified vehicle registrations is good for the industry, the consumer and the environment but, with the pace of public charging infrastructure struggling to keep up, we need swift action and binding public charger targets so that everyone can be part of the electric vehicle revolution, irrespective of where they live."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT, said, " While it’s disappointing to see the number of new vans registered during October decline, demand has remained strong over the course of the year. The commercial vehicle sector, however, is not immune to the challenges faced by the industry as a whole, most notably the semiconductor shortage. Manufacturers are woring hard to fulfil orders to ensure fleets can continue to be renewed and the latest models, including zero emission products, hit UK roads."

BMW sales decreased 25.8% to 15,747 units (7.3% share) and Audi sales decreased 43.7% to 12,325 units (5.7% share).
The best-selling cars in September 2021, were the Tesla Model 3 (6,879 units), Vauxhall Corsa (5,235 units), BMW 3 Series (4,788 units), Toyota Yaris (4,364 units) and Nissan Qashqai (4,118 units).
Compared to last September, gasoline-engine car sales decreased by 46.6% to 94,314 units (43.8% share), diesel-engine car sales decreased 77.3% to 10,658 units (5.0% share), and alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) sales increased 5.6% to 11,0340 units (51.2% share).
In September, private car sales decreased 25.3% to 120,560 units (56.0% share), fleet sales decreased 43.1% to 90,445 units (42.0% share), and sales to businesses decreased 43.3% to 4,307 units (2.0% share).
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons decreased 39.5% this September to 31,535 units.
Sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons decreased 14.2% to 639 units in September.
Sales of taxis increased 37.0% to 274 units in September.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT, said, "This is a desperately disappointing September and further evidence of the ongoing impact of the Covid pandemic on the sector. Despite strong demand for new vehicles over the summer, three successive months have been hit by stalled supply due to reduced semiconductor availability, especially from Asia. Nevertheless, manufacturers are taking every measure possible to maintain deliveries and customers can expect attractive offers on a range of new vehicles. Despite these challenges, the rocketing uptake of plug-in vehicles, especially battery electric cars, demonstrates the increasing demand for these new technologies. However, to meet our collective decarbonisation ambitions, we need to ensure all drivers can make the switch – not just those with private driveways – requiring a massive investment in public recharging infrastructure. Chargepoint roll-out must keep pace with the acceleration in plug-in vehicle registrations."

August sales for Volkswagen decreased 20.5% to 6,989 units (10.3% market share), Audi sales decreased 5.9% to 5,756 units (8.5% share), while Ford sales decreased 52.0% to 5,205 units (7.7% share).
Toyota sales increased 17.8% to 4,872 units (7.2% share) and BMW sales decreased 17.4% to 4,427 units (6.5% share).
Of the five most popular vehicles in August, 1,801 Ford Pumas; 1,761 VW Polos; 1,480 Toyota Yarises; 1,355 Kia Sportages; and 1,277 BMW 3 Seriesess were sold.
Compared to last August, gasoline-engine car sales decreased by 40.4% to 29,451 units (43.3% share), diesel-engine car sales decreased 64.5% to 5,077 units (7.5% share), and alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) sales increased 42.2% to 33,505 units (49.2% share).
In August, private car sales decreased 15.2% to 33,771 units (49.6% share), fleet sales decreased 27.5% to 33,315 units (49.0% share), and sales to businesses decreased 34.7% to 947 units (1.4% share).
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons increased 6.1% this August to 20,582 units.
Sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons decreased 1.0% to 392 units in August.
Sales of taxis increased 80.0% to 63 units in August.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "While August is normally one of the quietest months for UK new car registrations these figures are still disappointing, albeit not wholly surprising. The global shortage of semiconductors has affected UK, and indeed global, car production volumes so new car registrations will inevitably be undermined. Government can help by continuing the supportive Covid measures in place currently, especially the furlough scheme which has proven invaluable to so many businesses. As we enter the important September plate-change month with an ever-increasing range of electrified models and attractive deals, buyers in the market for the new 71 plate can be reassured manufacturers are doing all they can to ensure prompt deliveries."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "The automotive sector continues to battle against shortages of semiconductors and staff, which is throttling our ability to translate a strengthening economic outlook into a full recovery. The next few weeks will see changes to self-isolation policies which will hopefully help those companies across the industry dealing with staff absences, but the semiconductor shortage is likely to remain an issue until at least the rest of the year. As a result, we have downgraded the market outlook slightly for 2021. The bright spot, however, remains the increasing demand for electrified vehicles as consumers respond in ever greater numbers to these new technologies, driven by increased product choice, fiscal and financial incentives and an enjoyable driving experience."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "With the final phases of the UK’s vaccine rollout well underway and confidence increasing, the automotive sector is now battling against a ‘long Covid’ of vehicle supply challenges. The semiconductor shortages arising from Covid-constrained output globally are affecting vehicle production, disrupting supply on certain models and restricting the automotive recovery. However, rebuilding for the next decade is now well underway with investment in local battery production beginning and a raft of new electrified models in showrooms. With the end of domestic restrictions later this month looking more likely, business and consumer optimism should improve further, fuelling increased spending, especially as the industry looks towards September and advanced orders for the next plate change.

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "After one of the darkest years in automotive history, there is light at the end of the tunnel. A full recovery for the sector is still some way off, but with showrooms open and consumers able to test drive the latest, cleanest models, the industry can begin to rebuild. Market confidence is improving, and we now expect to finish the year in a slightly better position than anticipated in February, largely thanks to the more upbeat business and consumer confidence created by the successful vaccine rollout. That confidence should also translate into another record year for electric vehicles, which will likely account for more than one in seven new car registrations."
SMMT has revised its forecasts upwards from 1.83 million - based on a snap poll in February - to around 1.86 million new cars to be registered by the end of the year, a 13.9% increase on 2020.

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "The past year has been the toughest in modern history and the automotive sector has, like many others, been hit hard. However, with showrooms opening in less than a week, there is optimism that consumer confidence - and hence the market - will return. We know we will see record breaking growth next month given April 2020 was a washout, but a strong, sustainable market is possible if customers respond to the choice and competitive offers the industry provides within the safest of showroom environments. New plug-in models are already helping drive a recovery but to convince more retail consumers to make the switch, they must be assured these new technologies will be convenient for their driving needs and that means, above all, that the charging infrastructure is there where they need it, and when they need it."

UK passenger car sales decrease 35.5% in February
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on March 4, UK passenger car sales decreased 35.5% to 51,312 units in February 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Year-to-date sales decreased 38.1%, with 141,561 cars registered in the first two months of 2021.
February sales for Ford decreased 39.4% to 5,129 units (10.0% market share), Volkswagen sales decreased 44.7% to 4,952 units (9.7% share), while BMW sales decreased 40.8% to 3,939 units (7.7% share).
Mercedes-Benz sales decreased 34.1% to 3,787 units (7.4% share) and Audi sales decreased 17.2% to 3,715 units (7.2% share).
Of the five most popular vehicles in February, 1,645 Ford Fiestas; 1,408 Vauxhall Colsas; 1,321 Nissan Qashqais; 1,298 Mercedes-Benz A-Classes; and 1,251 Volvo XC40s were sold.
Compared to last February, gasoline-engine car sales decreased by 44.5% to 26,752 units (52.1% share), diesel-engine car sales decreased 61.0% to units (60.6% share), and alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) sales increased 26.9% to 17,799 units (34.7% share).
In February, private car sales decreased 37.3% to 21,364 units (41.6% share), fleet sales decreased 33.5% to 29,311 units (57.1% share), and sales to businesses decreased 56.6% to 637 units (1.2% share).
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons increased 22.0% this February to 17,205 units.
Sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons decreased 22.0% to 362 units in February.
Sales of taxis decreased 89.1% to 15 units in February.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "February is traditionally a small month for car registrations and with showrooms closed for the duration, the decline is deeply disappointing but expected. More concerning, however, is that these closures have stifled dealers’ preparations for March with the expectation that this will now be a third, successive dismal ‘new plate month’. Although we have a pathway out of restrictions with rapid vaccine rollout, and proven experience in operating click and collect, it is essential that showrooms reopen as soon as possible so the industry can start to build back better, and recover the GBP 23 billion loss from the past year."

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Following a GBP 20.4 billion loss of revenue last year, the auto industry faces a difficult start to 2021. The necessary lockdown will challenge society, the economy and our industry’s ability to move quickly towards our ambitious environmental goals. Lifting the shutters will secure jobs, stimulate the essential demand that supports our manufacturing, and will enable us to forge ahead on the Road to Zero. Every day that showrooms can safely open will matter, especially with the critical month of March looming."
