UK passenger car sales up 18.3% in December, down 2.0% in 2022
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on January 5, UK passenger car sales increased 18.3% to 128,462 units in December 2022. Year-to-date sales decreased 2.0% with 1,614,063 cars registered in 2022.
2022 sales for VW decreased 10.8% to 131,850 units (8.2% market share), Ford sales increased 9.0% to 126,826 units (7.9% share) while Audi sales decreased 6.6% to 110,144 units (6.8% share).
BMW sales decreased 6.8% to 108,624 units (6.7% share), Toyota sales increased 1.3% to 102,181 units (6.3% share).
The best-selling cars in 2022 were Nissan Qashqai (42,704 units), Vauxhall Corsa (35,910 units), Tesla Model Y (35,551 units), Ford Puma (35,088 units) and Mini (32,387 units).
Compared to last 2022, gasoline-engine car sales decreased 10.4% to 682,473 units (42.3% share), EV increased 40.1% to 267,203 units (16.6% share), gasoline MHEV sales increased 10.9% to 219,701 units (13.6% share), HEV increased 27.6% to 187,948 units (11.6% share), PHEV decreased 11.5% to 101,414 units (6.3% share), diesel MHEV sales decreased 26.7% to 72,343 units (4.5% share), diesel-engine car sales decreased 38.9% to 82,981 units (5.1% share).
In 2022, private car sales increased 2.0% to 818,509 units (50.7% share), fleet sales decreased 7.5% to 750,839 units (46.5% share), and businesses sales increased 37.0% to 44,715 units (2.8% share)
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons decreased 20.6% to 282,139 units, sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons  decreased 20.1% to 4,787 units while sales of taxis increased 26.7% to 1,697 units in 2022.
This second half year performance was not enough, however, to offset the declines recorded during the first half of 2022. Despite underlying demand, pandemic-related global parts shortages saw overall registrations for the year fall 2.0% to 1.61 million, around 700,000 units below pre-Covid levels.
Manufacturers face a Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate from 2024 (the details of which have still not been published). As a result, accelerated investment in charging infrastructure is needed if consumers are to be confident they can make the switch and brands are to have a chance of securing sufficient supply to support UK market growth and not lose out to other markets which are investing more rapidly.

UK passenger car sales increase 26.4% in October
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on November 4, UK passenger car sales increased 26.4% to 134,344 units in October 2022. Year-to-date sales decreased 5.6% with 1,342,712 cars registered in the first ten months of 2022.
October sales for Ford increased 94.7% to 13,295 units (9.9% market share), VW sales increased 41.4% to 12,804 units (9.5% share) while Audi sales increased 49.0% to 10,193 units (7.6% share). BMW sales increased 18.3% to 9,199 units (6.8% share) and Toyota sales increased 62.8% to 8,341 units (6.2% share).
The best-selling cars in October 2022 were Ford Fiesta (4,230 units), Nissan Qashqai (4,228 units), VW Golf (3,339 units), Ford Puma (3,218 units) and Vauxhall Corsa (2,784 units).
Compared to last October, diesel-engine car decreased 9.7% to 6,347 units (4.7% share), gasoline-engine car sales increased 17.8% to 56,994 units (42.4% share), diesel MHEV increased 21.4% to 5,466 units (4.1% share), Gasoline MHEV increased 59.5% to 20,993 units (15.6% share), EV increased 23.4% to 19,933 units (14.8% share), PHEV increased 6.2% to 8,899 units (6.6% share) and HEV increased 81.7% to 15,712 units (11.7% share).
In October, private car sales increased 7.4% to 62,714 units (46.7% share), fleet sales increased 47.4% to 67,911 units (50.6% share) and businesses sales increased 108.6% to 3,719 units (2.8% share).
Growth in October was driven primarily by large fleet registrations. Fulfilment of strong order books helped deliver the bounce-back, although the increase follows a particularly disappointing October 2021 when deliveries fell by -24.6%.
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons decreased 18.4% to 22,386 units, sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons decreased 27.2% to 273 units while sales of taxis decreased 34.0% to 157 units in October.
Ongoing supply chain shortages, surging inflation and a growing cost of living crisis have led to a -2.2% downward revision of the new car market outlook for the year, with 1.566 million registrations now anticipated. This puts 2022 on course to be the market’s toughest year since 1982. More positively, demand for electric vehicles is anticipated to result in a plug-in market share of 21.9%. Overall car market recovery is anticipated to continue through 2023, with an outlook of 1.808 million units and plug-ins accounting for 26.7% of registrations next year.
For LCV market, SMMT also downgraded outlook for full year 2022, to 290,000 units, down -18.5% on 2021 and -20.8% lower than 2019. While the LCV market is expected to rally in 2023 to 330,000 units, and up to 351,000 units during 2024, these totals would still be below pre-pandemic levels.

Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons increased 10.8% to 34,950 units, sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons decreased 23.9% to 486 units while sales of taxis decreased 0.4% to 273 units in September.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT, said, “September has seen Britain’s millionth electric car reach the road – an important milestone in the shift to zero emission mobility. Battery electric vehicles make up but a small fraction of cars on the road, so we need to ensure every lever is pulled to encourage motorists to make the shift if our green goals are to be met. The overall market remains weak, however, as supply chain issues continue to constrain model availability. Whilst the industry is working hard to address these issues, the long-term recovery of the market also depends on robust consumer confidence and economic stability.”

Vauxhall sales increased 43.7% to 4,638 units (6.7% share) and Audi sales decreased 20.4% to 4,582 units (6.7% share).
The best-selling cars in August 2022 were VW Polo (1,902 units), Ford Puma (1,875 units), Hyundai Tucson (1,739 units), Vauxhall Corsa (1,608 units) and VW T-Roc (1,460 units).
Compared to last August, gasoline-engine car sales increased 7.5% to 31,652 units (46.0% share), diesel-engine car sales decreased 12.3% to 4,455 units (6.5% share), EV increased 35.4% to 10,006 units (14.5% share), PHEV decreased 23.1% to 3,884 units (5.6% share), HEV decreased 0.7% to 8,007 units (11.6% share).
In August, private car sales increased 3.2% to 34,865 units (50.6% share), fleet sales decreased 1.6% to 32,794 units (47.6% share), and businesses sales increased 26.6% to 1,199 units (1.7% share).
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons decreased 24.6% to 15,520 units, sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons decreased 25.5% to 292 units while sales of taxis increased 22.2% to 77 units in August.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "August’s new car market growth is welcome, but marginal during a low volume month. Spiralling energy costs and inflation on top of sustained supply chain challenges are piling even more pressure on the automotive industry’s post-pandemic recovery, and we urgently need the new Prime Minister to tackle these challenges and restore confidence and sustainable growth. With September traditionally a bumper time for new car uptake, the next month will be the true barometer of industry recovery as it accelerates the transition to zero emission mobility despite the myriad challenges."

UK passenger car sales decrease 24.3% in June
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on July 5, UK passenger car sales decreased 24.3% to 140,958 units in June 2022. Year-to-date sales decreased 11.9% with 802,079 cars registered in the first six months of 2022. Ongoing challenges in component supply, exacerbated by restrictions in China, hamper industry’s ability to fulfil demand.
June sales for VW decreased 40.1% to 11,660 units (8.3% market share) while Vauxhall decreased 1.6% to 9,966 units (7.1% market share).
Ford decreased 30.6% to 9,879 units (7.0% market share).
BMW sales decreased 33.5% to 9,467 units (6.7% share) and Kia sales increased 0.5% to 9,218 units (6.5% share).
The best-selling cars in June 2022 were Vauxhall Corsa (5,014 units), Tesla Model Y (4,194 units), MINI (3,055 units), Nissan Qashqai (2,987 units) and VW Golf (2,965 units).
Compared to last June, gasoline-engine car sales decreased 28.2% to 62,005 units (44.0% share), diesel-engine car sales decreased 46.7% to 8,003 units (5.7% share), EV increased 14.6% to 22,737 units (16.1% share), PHEV decreased 36.5% to 7,714 units (5.5% share), HEV decreased 7.3% to 14,978 units (10.6% share).
In June, private car sales decreased 21.7% to 69,453 units (49.3% share), fleet sales decreased 27.6% to 67,242 units (47.7% share), and businesses sales decreased 5.3% to 4,263 units (3.0% share).
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons decreased 23.0% to 26,443 units, sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons decreased 17.1% to 520 units while sales of taxis increased 6.7% to 128 units in June.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT, said, “the semiconductor shortage is stifling the new car market even more than last year’s lockdown. Electric vehicle demand continues to be the one bright spot, as more electric cars than ever take to the road, but while this growth is welcome it is not yet enough to offset weak overall volumes, which has huge implications for fleet renewal and our ability to meet overall carbon reduction targets. With motorists facing rising fuel costs, however, the switch to an electric car makes ever more sense and the industry is working hard to improve supply and prioritise deliveries of these new technologies given the savings they can afford drivers.”

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT, said, “In yet another challenging month for the new car market, the industry continues to battle ongoing global parts shortages, with growing battery electric vehicle uptake one of the few bright spots. To continue this momentum and drive a robust mass market for these vehicles, we need to ensure every buyer has the confidence to go electric. This requires an acceleration in the rollout of accessible charging infrastructure to match the increasing number of plug-in vehicles, as well as incentives for the purchase of new, cleaner and greener cars. Delivering on Net Zero means renewing the vehicles on our roads at pace but, with rising inflation and a squeeze on household incomes, this will be increasingly difficult unless businesses and private buyers have the confidence and encouragement to do so.”

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT, said, “The worldwide semiconductor shortage continues to drag down the market, with global geopolitical issues threatening to undermine both supply and demand in the coming months. Manufacturers are doing everything they can to deliver the latest low and zero emission vehicles, and those considering purchase should look to place their orders now to benefit from incentives, low interest rates and reduced running costs. Accelerating the transformation of the new car market and the carbon savings demanded of road transport in such difficult times requires not just the resolution of supply issues, however, but a broader package of measures that encourages customer demand and addresses obstacles, the biggest of which remains charging anxiety.”

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT, said, “March is typically the biggest month of the year for the new car market, so this performance is deeply disappointing and lays bare the challenges ahead. While demand remains robust, this decline illustrates the severity of the global semiconductor shortage, as manufacturers strive to deliver the latest, lowest emission vehicles to eagerly awaiting customers. Placing orders now will be beneficial for those looking to take advantage of incentives and lower running costs for electric vehicles, especially as the Ukraine crisis could affect supply still further. With increasing household and business costs, government must do all it can to support consumers so that the growth of electric vehicles can be sustained and the UK’s ambitious net zero timetable delivered.”

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT, said, “Despite February’s traditional low registration numbers, consumers are switching to EVs in ever-increasing numbers. More than ever, infrastructure investment needs to accelerate to match this growth. Government must use its upcoming Spring Statement to enable this transition, continuing support for home and workplace charging, boosting public chargepoint rollout to tackle charging anxiety and, given the massive increase in energy prices, reducing VAT on public charging points. This will energise both consumer and business confidence and accelerate our switch to zero emission mobility.”

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT, said, “Given the lockdown-impacted January 2021, this month’s figures were always going to be an improvement but it is still reassuring to see a strengthening market. Once again it is electrified vehicles that are driving the growth, despite the ongoing headwinds of chip shortages, rising inflation and the cost-of-living squeeze. 2022 is off to a reasonable start, however, and with around 50 new electrified models due for release this year, customers will have an ever greater choice, which can only be good for our shared environmental ambitions.”
