Indonesian sales down 11.9% to 74,347 in November
The Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO) and other sources reported that Indonesian vehicle sales in November 2024 were 74,347 units, down 11.9% compared to November 2023.
By automaker sales in November, Toyota was down 12.7% y/y to 26,984 units and a 36.3% market share. Daihatsu was down 26.0% to 10,030 units with a 13.5% market share. Honda was down 20.8% to 8,397 units with an 11.3% market share. Mitsubishi was down 12.7% to 6,050 units with an 8.1% market share. Suzuki was down 21.3% to 5,605 units with a 7.5% market share. BYD, a new entrant to the market in July, sold 2,842 units to keep its position at sixth place with a 3.8% market share from the eighth last month.
2024 January-November sales were down 14.7% to 784,788 units.
This situation has forced GAIKINDO to cut the national car sales target from 1.1 million units to 850 thousand units in 2024. GAIKINDO Chairman Jongkie Sugiarto said GAIKINDO is worried that the impact of tax options to increase value added tax (PPN) to 12 percent next year will further pressure the automotive industry. GAIKINDO will monitor public enthusiasm for new vehicles and the trend of increasing vehicle orders during the automotive exhibition at the end of 2024.

Indonesian sales down 14.2% to 76,304 in August
The Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO) and other sources reported that Indonesian vehicle sales in August 2024 were 76,304 units, down 14.2% compared to August 2023.
By automaker sales in August, Toyota was down 13.8% y/y to 25,989 units and a 34.1% market share. Daihatsu was down 20.9% to 13,829 units and a 18.1% market share. Honda was down 35.8% to 7,556 units and a 9.9% market share. Mitsubishi was down 11.9% to 6,254 units and an 8.2% market share. Suzuki was down 23.4% to 5,265 units and an 6.9% market share. BYD, a new entrant in July, is in sixth place with 2,940 units sold.
2024 January-August sales were down 17.1% to 560,619 units.
Automotive experts predicts that the target of 1.1 million car sales units this year set by Gaikindo will be missed. To achieve that target, it requires average sales of around 110 thousand units per month in the last four months of this year. In addition, experts predicts that car sales this year will only reach 850,950 thousand units, considering that the economic conditions are not very 'green'.

Indonesian sales down 11.8% to 72,936 in June
The Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO) and other sources reported that Indonesian vehicle sales in June 2024 were 72,936 units, down 11.8% compared to June 2023.
By automaker sales in June, Toyota was up 2.7% y/y to 25,464 units and a 34.9% market share. Daihatsu was down 17.4% to 14,967 units and a 20.5% market share. Honda was down 34.1% to 7,618 units and a 10.4% market share. Mitsubishi was up 17.6% to 6,470 units and an 8.9% market share. Suzuki was down 41.5% to 4,584 units and an 6.3% market share.
2024 January-June sales were down 19.4% to 408,012 units.
Gaikindo Secretary General Kukuh Kumara assessed that the slowdown in the national automotive industry began to be felt since the Fed began raising its benchmark interest rate in the third quarter of 2023. Since then, Bank Indonesia has also started to raise its benchmark interest rate to the current level of 6.25%. In addition, the 2024 General Election and the unstable purchasing power of some people have also had an impact on national car sales during this year.
However, Gaikindo is confident that the national automotive market will recover in the near future. The 2024 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) exhibition is believed to boost national car sales, especially in the early second semester of 2024.

Indonesian sales down 13.3% to 71,263 in May
The Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO) and other sources reported that Indonesian vehicle sales in May 2024 were 71,263 units, down 13.3% compared to May 2023.
By automaker sales in May, Toyota was down 16.7% y/y to 23,482 units and a 33.0% market share. Daihatsu was down 6.4% to 14,983 units and a 21.0% market share. Honda was down 34.6% to 7,294 units and a 10.2% market share. Mitsubishi was up 22.0% to 6,976 units and an 9.8% market share. Suzuki was down 9.6% to 5,762 units and an 8.1% market share.
2024 January-May sales were down 21.0% to 334,969 units.
Chairman of Gaikindo Jongkie Sugiarto said that the decline in car sales was in line with low demand from consumers. Bank Indonesia's benchmark interest rate is also still at a high level, namely 6.25%. This is considered to affect motor vehicle financing credit interest rates. Nevertheless, Gaikindo hopes that car sales can recover soon. "The projection for 2024 (sales target) is still 1.1 million units, but adjustments can be made at any time," said Jongkie in his statement.

By automaker sales in February, Toyota was down 13.9% y/y to 23,525 units and a 33.3% market share. Daihatsu was down 7.2% to 15,088 units and a 21.4% market share. Honda was down 36.8% to 9,081 units and a 12.9% market share. Mitsubishi was down 13.5% to 5,994 units and an 8.5% market share. Suzuki was down 32.7% to 4,993 units and a 7.1% market share.
2024 January-February sales were down 22.6% to 140,274 units.
Chairman of Gaikindo Jongkie Sugiharto said that car sales in the first two months of this year decreased on an annual basis. This is partly because in January-February many consumers were still waiting for the election results. They held back spending because they were careful to anticipate elements of uncertainty that might arise because of the election.
Despite sluggish sales in January-February 2024, Jongkie is optimistic that national car sales will increase again in March 2024 and beyond.

By automaker sales in January, Toyota was down 27.6% y/y to 20,988 units and a 30.1% market share. Daihatsu was down 21.1% to 14,363 units and a 20.6% market share. Chairman of Gaikindo Jongkie Sugiarto said that the decline in car sales in Indonesia last month was caused by the effects of national economic growth which was also experiencing a slowdown. The benchmark interest rate and inflation that are still high have also made some consumers choose to hold back or postpone purchasing a new car in early 2024.
Reflecting on this, Gaikindo is confident that the national car sales target of 1.1 million units in 2024 can be achieved.
