NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) Overview and Activities (2)

NCAP evaluation criteria and comparison

2023/03/10

Summary

When the NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) was first launched in the United States, the evaluation items centered on occupant protection performance during collisions through crash tests. After that, as other NCAPs were started, the content was gradually expanded to include child protection and pedestrian protection, and the emphasis has shifted from collision countermeasures to collision avoidance including the protection of vulnerable road users through automatic braking and the installation of recommended safety devices. The evaluation of advanced technology has increased, and the number of NCAPs that provide a comprehensive evaluation weighting of each of these technologies individually is increasing.

(Note: Occupant protection during collision: In frontal, side, and rear impact tests, occupant protection is evaluated based on occupant injury values measured with mannequins, but no effective crash test method has been established for rollover. Instead, rollover evaluates the difficulty of overturning estimated from the size of the vehicle and the height of the center of gravity.)

This NCAP report is divided into two parts. In Part 1, the characteristics and issues of each NCAP, as well as future trends represented by Euro NCAP's Roadmap 2030 are described. This report, Part 2, will provide details of the test methods, including new items, and a comparison of each NCAP.
