Opel: World premieres of the Insignia and Crossland X

On March 6, the day before press day, it was announced that the PSA Peugeot Citroen Group would purchase Opel, but the news went largely unnoticed at the show. Opel is a familiar brand to Europeans, and its black and yellow striped booth attracted many attendees. The topics discussed at the show were the world premiere of the Insignia, a successor to the Vectra, and the Crossland X sub-compact SUV.

INSIGNIA Sports Tourer

INSIGNIA Sports Tourer

The second generation Insignia Sports Tourer was exhibited on the same turntable as the Grand Sport sedan. It is a shooting brake style wagon. The height, length and width were extended several millimeters.

It has a length of 4,986 mm, width of 1,862 mm, height of 1,501 mm, and wheelbase of 2,830 mm, with a luggage capacity of 561 L.

The dimensions of the interior package and interior specifications are equivalent to the Sports Tourer. The same lightweight materials were used to reduce the weight by 175 kg. The outer dimensions are comprised of a length of 4,897 mm, and a wheelbase, height and width that are the same as those for the Sports Tourer. The number of engine types and their performance are the same as for the Sports Tourer, and a correspondingly large number of 8-speed AT specifications.

World premiere of the new Crossland X SUV

This model is a successor of the Meriva compact MPV that was released in 2003.

Crossland X SUV

Volvo: World premiere of an all-new version of the popular XC60 SUV

The booth had the same layout as it always does at motor shows. The models pushed by Volvo at this show were exhibited on the center table and showcases on both sides. SUVs make up 30% of all the vehicles sold worldwide by Volvo, and the OEM unveiled an all-new version of the XC60, which has sold over 1 million vehicles around the world.

World premiere of the all-new XC60

This is the second generation of the XC60 that was released in 2008. Along with improved safety equipment, which was adopted for the currently available XC90, the all-new XC60 is underpinned by the newly developed Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform in anticipation of future electrification and autonomous operation. The characteristics of the SUVs in Europe are the slim proportions with a short overhang in the front and rear of the body. The style of Volvo's SUVs has evolved with similar proportions, and a new sense of lively motion was added to this model.

It has a length of 4,688 mm, width of 1,902 mm, height of 1,720 mm, and wheelbase of 2,805 mm.

Five types of engines including two diesel engines and three gasoline engines are available, including a 2.0L diesel with an output of 190 to 235 hp, a 2.0L gasoline with an output of 245 to 320 hp, and a PHV with a 2.0L gasoline + motor that has an output of 407 hp. All the engines are equipped with turbos.

The standard model has an 8-speed AT, and is either a 4x2 or 4x4 (gasoline).

The new PHV that will be added to the XC60 series was also exhibited. The interior and exterior are the same as the other models.

A chassis with the battery mounted in the center for a PHV announced in 2012 was exhibited. The 320 hp gasoline engine, 87 hp motor, and 34kW starter generator outputs 407 hp/640Nm.

Instrument panel

Like other companies, the design of the instrument panel was done based on ergonomic principles, but unlike panels in German vehicles, a novel design was adopted with ivory accents. The instrument panel is equipped with a touch display and various infotainment systems. The vehicle is also equipped with driver assistance systems, including steering support for braking, obstacle detection, and lane keep functions. Volvo publicized its driver assistance system at this show like other OEMs, but even for Volvo, which is known in the European market for its strong emphasis on safety, there did not seem to be much about the system to get people talking.

FERRARI 812 Superfast

FERRARI 812 Superfast

Techniques for the reduction of air resistance (aerodynamics) have been advanced to the utmost for super cars like Ferraris. Ferrari has now improved the speed and vehicle stability by completely rectifying the airflow under the floor, as well as around the body.

FERRARI 812 Superfast

As a result of this improvement to the aerodynamics, an 812 Superfast with a new engine (refer to the figure above) achieved a maximum speed of 340 km/h with acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds. Although there is no speed limit on the Autobahn except for some portions, there is a speed limit of 150 km/h on the Autostrada del Sole, a major public highway in Italy, so wealthy super car owners will most likely drive on circuits. In order to ensure stability for high speed cornering, the 812 Superfast is equipped a special electronic power steering assist function.

The vehicle is offered with a 5.2L V10 engine that has an output of 640 hp/540 Nm, and accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds. The weight of this model was reduced 40 kg compared to its predecessor by using light weight materials. It is equipped with a dual clutch transmission, electronically controlled full time 4WD, and the front spoiler has an electronically controlled mechanism to improve the aerodynamics and vehicle stability.

In addition to the vehicles in the photo above, an open top RWD Spyder was also exhibited. Some attendees felt that the recent design and styling trend for Lamborghini vehicles is becoming more conventional.

Citroen concept car: world premiere of a new compact SUV

PSA Group member Citroen had its usual colorful booth befitting a French maker, but fewer attendees compared to Peugeot due to its fragmented layout.

Two concept cars were exhibited; a new compact SUV and a one box active sports van that was exhibited in 2016.

Furthest back is the C-AIRCROSS (Photo: From Behance display materials)

Citroen exhibited its first large SUV, called the AIRCROSS, at the Shanghai Show in 2015, and the C-AIRCROSS shown at this show had a similar design. However, this model is compact, with a length that is 430 mm shorter and width that is 300 mm narrower, and more modern, cute styling. It is also equipped with a 4-mode grip control system that can handle various road conditions.

It has a length of 4,150 mm, width of 1,740 mm, height of 1,630 mm and wheelbase of 2,400 mm. The model comes with front-wheel drive and engines ranging from a 1.2L engine with an output of 80 hp to a 1.6L engine with an output of 130 hp.

The Koleos is positioned in the upper rank of Renault SUVs, and the company plans to sell the vehicle worldwide. This SUV completes Renault's next-generation SUV lineup.

Although the company is targeting global sales, the style seemed conservative for Renault.

An instrument panel that is somewhat different than those in German vehicles and 7 inch screen (8.7 inch optional) is installed in the center of the instrument panel with less decorative molding, aiming for a chic design. Various driver assistance systems like other companies offer are available for European spec vehicles.
