Summary

Frankfurt Auto Show 2015

 This second report on the IAA Frankfurt Auto Show 2015 focuses on PSA, Renault, FCA and Jaguar from Europe, and General Motors Company (exhibiting Opel cars) and Ford Motor Company from the United States. Exhibits by Japanese and Korean OEMs will be reported in the third report.

 PSA Peugeot Citroen (PSA) premiered Peugeot, Citroen and DS branded models. They included the Peugeot Fractal EV roadster concept, the Citroen Cactus M concept designed for marine sports use, and the DS4 Crossback, an all-new crossover model.

 Renault displayed the C-segment Megane hatchback and the D-segment Talisman Estate wagon that are built on the Common Module Family (CMF)'s C and D modular platforms which are developed jointly by Renault and Nissan.

 Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) unveiled the Alfa Romeo Giulia, a four-door sports sedan, and the F-Pace, the first crossover Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) under the Jaguar brand.

 General Motors (GM) unveiled the all-new Astra Sports Tourer that is up to 200kg lighter than the current model, under the Opel brand. Ford Motor intends to strengthen its SUV sales in Europe. Ford is launching a midsized SUV, the Edge, with the goal to nearly triple its SUV sales in Europe from the 2013 level to 200,000 units in 2016.

PSA: Peugeot Fractal roadster concept and 308 GTi by Peugeot Sport

 PSA exhibited Peugeot, Citroen and DS-branded models. The Peugeot exhibition was themed after technology and sports with the world premieres of the Fractal EV roadster concept and the 308 GTi by Peugeot Sport.

 PSA's Citroen booth showcased the Cactus M concept designed for marine sports. The DS booth unveiled the DS4 Crossback, an all-new crossover derived from the facelifted DS4. PSA also exhibited a concept car based on the DS4 Crossback clad in a new exterior material, stone.

Peugeot: World premiere of Fractal EV roadster concept with digital sound

 Peugeot unveiled the Fractal EV roadster concept. It is powered by two motors with the maximum output of 75kW, one located on each front and rear axle, and 40kWh lithium-ion battery pack stowed in the center tunnel. The car weighs less than 1,000 kg and has a range of up to 450 km on a single charge.

 The Fractal EV roadster concept is equipped with a 9.1-channel audio system that is capable of making the motor operation audible to pedestrians for safety. The car's interior has been created using 3D-printed components and is designed like an anechoic chamber.

308 GTi by Peugeot Sport

 This is the sport version of the 308 C-segment hatchback unveiled earlier at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show. Its height has been reduced by 11 mm and is powered by the 1.6-liter THP S&S engine. Two versions, with the maximum output of 270hp and 250hp, respectively, are available.

Citroen: Cactus M concept designed for marine sports

 The Citroen booth unveiled the Cactus M concept, a convertible concept version of the compact C4 Cactus crossover. Designed for marine sports use, the Cactus M concept is capable of lashing two surfboards on the roof. Other unique features include the drainage floor and the roof that can be stretched out backwards to form a tent.

 The Cactus M concept also features airbumps, flexible plastic panels filled with air capsules at the front, back, right and left sides of the vehicle. The airbumps, inherited from the C4 Cactus from which the Cactus M concept is derived, are designed to protect the car from minor bumps and scrapes.

DS: DS4 Crossback crossover and the stone-trimmed concept unveiled

 The DS4 Crossback is a crossover version of the DS4 midsize hatchback. It features a newly-designed front face dubbed DS Wings and slated for sale in Europe starting in October 2015. It is 30 mm higher than the DS4 and characterized by the wheel arch trim, front end finished in black, and roof bars.

 The DS4 Crossback Concept, premiered alongside the DS4 Crossback, is a design concept model featuring decorative components made from new material, stone. It uses slices of stone that has been cut and shaped to trim the wheel rims, door mirrors, roof bars and front end.

Renault: Megane and Talisman Estate on Renault-Nissan's CMF-C/D platforms

 Renault had a world premiere of two models that are built on CMF-C/D modular platforms jointly developed by Renault and Nissan, the Megane C-segment hatchback and the Talisman Estate D-segment wagon.

 Renault Megane: Renault unveiled the fully-remodeled Megane C-segment hatchback which will compete with the VW Golf and the Peugeot 308. The Megane is the second best-selling model after the Clio in terms of annual sales (268,000 units in 2014). The new model is slated for sale in Europe starting in January 2016.

 Built on Renault-Nissan's CMF-C/D modular platforms, the Megane is 64mm longer (4,359mm) and its height is 25mm less (1,447mm) than the previous model. The Megane is generously equipped with features that are found on the Talisman from an upper segment such as the full-color head-up display, 7-inch TFT instrument display and 8.7-inch "R-Link 2" touch-screen.

 Renault plans to launch, at the beginning of 2017, a mild hybrid model dubbed "Hybrid Assist" Diesel that combines a diesel engine with motor-assist and deceleration energy regenerative system. The new model is expected to have fuel economy of 3-liter/100km (NEDC) and CO2 emissions of 76g/km.

Renault Talisman wagon unveiled

 Renault premiered the Talisman Estate D-segment wagon, which is slated for sale in the first half of 2016. The Talisman sedan was announced earlier in July and will be released for sale toward the end of 2015. The Talisman is positioned as the successor to the Laguna and Latitude. Both the wagon and sedan are of the same dimensions, 4,860mm long, 1,870mm wide and 1,460mm high with a 2,810mm wheelbase. The Talisman wagon has the luggage capacity of 1,700 liters.

FCA: Alfa Romeo Giulia revives; sub-compact 500X SUV

 Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) premiered the Giulia 4-door sports sedan carrying the Alfa Romeo brand. It was received with high enthusiasm among visitors. FCA also exhibited the 500X crossover that was launched last year under the Fiat brand, along with other models in the 500 Series.

 

Alfa Romeo: Giulia revives after 40 years

 The all-new 4-door sports sedan, the Giulia, is available with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. To keep the weight down, the propeller shaft, hood and roof are made of CFRP. The engine, brake, suspension, doors and fenders are made of aluminum.

 The top-spec model, the Quadrifoglio, is powered by a 2.9-liter V6 turbocharged engine that was co-developed with Ferrari. It has 510hp output along with a power-to-weight ratio of less than 3kg per horsepower. It accelerates from standstill to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds with CO2 emissions of 198g/km. Order-taking for the Quadrifoglio will start in the fourth quarter of 2015 with the retail price at around EUR 79,000 in Italy.

Fiat: hot-selling sub-compact 500X SUV

 Fiat regards the 500 as a brand of its own and is rolling out derivative models leveraging the brand appeal of the small Fiat 500. The Fiat booth at the Frankfurt Auto Show 2015 showcased the 500X sub-compact SUV that was launched in 2015. It is a sibling to the Jeep Renegade launched in 2014. To meet their growing demand, Fiat hired 1000 additional employees in January 2015 at the Italian plant where the two models are manufactured.

Jaguar: F-Pace, Jaguar's first SUV

 Jaguar's first crossover SUV, the F-Pace, is a five-seater SUV slated for launch in 2016. It is based on the Jaguar C-X17 concept car that was exhibited at the Frankfurt Auto Show 2013. The F-Pace is 4,731mm long and built on lightweight aluminum architecture. The model fitted with a 180ps diesel engine weighs approximately 1,665kg and has CO2 emissions of 129g/km.

Opel: Astra Sports Tourer unveiled after 200kg weight reduction

 GM premiered the all-new Astra Sports Tourer under the Opel brand. It is a wagon version of the new Astra that was launched earlier in June 2015. It is slightly smaller than the current model. Its overall length has been reduced by 50mm, width by 5mm and height by 25mm. At the same time, the driver's headroom has been increased by 22mm and the knee space behind the driver's seat by 35mm to increase overall cabin comfort.

 A lightweight platform is used to achieve 120kg to 200kg weight reduction as detailed below: * 77kg reduction of white body weight from 357kg to 280kg by increased use of ultra high strength steel sheet * 50kg weight reduction of chassis components (smaller tire and wheel diameters, etc.) * 10kg weight reduction by using aluminum block of downsized engine

Ford: Launching midsize Edge SUV to boost SUV sales in Europe

 Ford is launching a midsize SUV, the Edge, in Europe to boost its SUV sales there. Production of the European model will start in the United States in the second half of 2015. The Edge will be Ford's third SUV model in Europe after the Kuga and the EcoSport. With the launch of the Edge, Ford intends to nearly triple its SUV salesin Europe to 200,000 units in 2016 from the 2013 level.
