In US market, engines on downsize trend while 6-speed AT on the rise

Summary

 Following is an outline of configurations in terms of the number of cylinders and piston displacements of the engines as well as the types of the transmissions on the passenger cars and light trucks sold in the United States by 14 major auto manufacturers (MY2009 to MY2011).

 Starting with the engines, the 6-cylinder 3L-class engines accounted for 35.2% in MY2011, up 6.6 percentage points from MY2009. The ratio of the 4-cylinder 2L-class engines remained generally unchanged at approximately 30% in the United States, but the ratio of the 4-cylinder engines with less than 2L displacement rose from 7.1% to 9.0%, suggesting a sign of downsizing.

 With regard to the transmissions, the ratio of the 4-speed AT fell from 28.4% in MY2009 to 15.3% in MY2011 while the ratio of the 6-speed AT rose from 29.1% to 53.7%, indicating a sharp rise of multi-speed configurations.



Engine configurations: The 6-cylinder 3L-class engines account for 35.2%, the ratio of the 4-cylinder engines with less than 2L displacement increases to 9.0%

 The ratio of the 6-cylinder engines among the engines on MY2011 vehicles (manufactured in North America) rose to 38.0% (from 34.3% in MY2009) as a result of sales recovery of pickups, SUVs and other light trucks.

 With regard to the piston displacement of the 6-cylinder engines, however, the ratio of the 4L-class engines declined from 4.5% in MY2009 to 2.1% in MY2011 while the ratio of the 3L-class engines rose from 28.6% to 35.2%. This suggests a sign of downsizing. A similar trend is found with the 4-cylinder engines with less than 2L displacement, the ratio of which rose from 7.1% in MY2009 to 9.0% in MY2011.

 As for the engines on passenger cars, the 4-cylinder engines accounted for 63.7% in MY2011. Among them, the ratio of the engines with less than 2L-class displacement increased from 14.6% in MY2009 to 21.6% in MY2011 while the ratio of the 2L-class engines declined from 50.9% to 42.1%.

 As for the engines on light trucks, the 8-cylinder engines accounted for 40.1% in MY2009 but fell to 34.8% in MY2011 and the ratio of the 6-cylinder engines increased from 44.0% to 47.7%. Focusing on the displacement of the engines on the light trucks, the ratio of the 2L-class engines increased from 15.3% to 17.0% and that of the 3L engines rose from 35.6% to 43.3%. In contrast, the ratio of the 4L-class engines declined from 18.2% to 8.6% in the same time span.

 The ratio of the ethanol fuel-compatible engines (up to 85% content) on the vehicles (manufactured in North America), eligible for preferential treatment under the fuel economy regulations, increased from 10.0% in MY2009 to 13.7%. The ratio of the turbocharged engines rose from 5.3% to 9.3% in the same period but the ratio of the hybrid vehicles remained low at about 1%.

 As for the engine configurations of the vehicles produced in North America by the Detroit Three, the ratio of the 4-cylinder engines with less than 2L displacement on passenger cars rose sharply to 15.7% in MY2011 from only 0.7% in the previous year. This reflects Ford's launch of the Fiesta powered by the 4-cylinder 1.6L engine and GM's launch of the Chevrolet Cruze powered by the 4-cylinder 1.4L turbo engines or 4-cylinder 1.8L engine.

Imports include the Jaguar/Land Rover, Porsche, Saab and Volvo brands in addition to the 14 automakers listed above.

Transmissions: The ratio of 6-speed AT rises sharply to 53.7% while that of the 4-speed AT falls to 15.3%

 Now focusing on the transmissions in the U.S. market (vehicles manufactured in North America), the automatic transmissions (ATs) account for 95.6% of the MY2011 cars (up 0.7 percentage points from MY2009). Multi-speed gear shifting characterizes the automotive trend today as indicated by the ratio of the 6-speed AT rising sharply from 29.1% in MY2009 to 53.1% in MY2011. In contrast, the ratio of the 4-speed AT decreased by half from 28.4% to 15.3%.

 The ratio of the 6-speed AT on the Detroit Three's cars (manufactured in North America) nearly doubled in a year from 38.1% in MY2010 to 64.8% in MY2011. The ratio of the 6-speed AT on Japanese cars (manufactured in North America) was only 28.3% in MY2011 but increased approximately five times from 6.0% in MY2009.
