Introduction

CES 2024 showed again that it is a key tradeshow for the auto industry and continues to grow in importance. The topic of this Tech Brief is a full summary but here are the highlights:

  • The Tier 1 suppliers had a larger presence than OEMs with at least 11 companies depending on who is included. Most showed HMI, interior, ADAS and EV related.
  • Autonomous vehicle tech is no longer a top interest category at CES. There were over 41 exhibitors showing AV products and/or technologies. Most are niches and utility related.
  • Robotaxis got less attention with Waymo and others missing this year. Robotrucks are doing fine with multiple companies having a presence. TuSimple was no longer a CES exhibitor as it is closing its U.S. operation to focus on China and Asian countries such as Japan. Route-centric AVs that focus on bus routes and similar applications were also attending CES.
  • Lidar and radar exhibitors increased from 2023. There seemed to be a lot of foreign companies in both categories. Maybe they have not got the message that there is a consolidation-especially in lidars.
  • We also counted the number of navigation and map suppliers. A large portion was again foreign companies. We were surprised by the pickup in map related companies.
  • VSI counted 41 SDV-related companies-a few more than last year. There were many more companies talking about SDV as they are planning to add such technology or release products and services that rely on SDV technologies. And many are using the SDV acronym to tap into the interest in SDV technology.
