Vienna Motor Symposium 2024 (1) Energy First!

Plenary session: Sustainable energy for a net-zero future

2024/06/06

Summary

The International Vienna Motor Symposium, being organized by the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers (ÖVK), was held for the 45th time this year. As a tradition it took place at the Hofburg in Vienna, Austria from April 24th to 26th, and was attended by far more than 1,000 participants from many different countries.

Over 80 presentations were held in three parallel sessions, 65 of which were held on site and a further 16 in-depth video lectures were held virtually on the web platform.

At this annual event, experts from automotive OEMs and component suppliers and academics come together to exchange opinions on future climate-neutral drive solutions.

Main topics discussed at this year's symposium were the coexistence of different powertrain systems (i.e. electric motors, fuel cells, and internal combustion engines), or energy sources such as eFuels, hydrogen or electricity. In addition storage systems such as batteries and hydrogen solutions were addressed as well.

The full agenda of lectures can be viewed on the official website (https://wiener-motorensymposium.at/en/programme/technical-programme) and the conference documents - also for previous symposia - can be ordered here (https://wiener-motorensymposium.at/en/conference-documents).

On the evening of the first day and during break time, participants had the opportunity to visit 60 booths at the accompanying trade exhibition.

Suppliers, service and solution providers, research institutes and engineering consultancy companies showcased their latest products, technologies and concepts.

In the outside area participants was offered the possibility to take a close look at the latest technologies in vehicles on display and experience these by having a test drive.

Also this year, five members of the orchestra of the University of Technology Vienna opened the event with a traditional fanfare of Georg Friedrich Händel's “Water Music”.

In a short opening speech Prof. Dr. Bernhard Geringer, Chairman of the Board of the Austrian Association for Automotive Engineering (ÖVK), emphasized that climate protection is the primary goal of any further technical development.

In order to achieve decarbonization by 2050, we must be open to technology and make maximum efforts to make green energy sources available, he said.

This is part one of the event report, which includes a summary of the keynotes of the opening plenary session under the motto of “Energy First!” and the latest trends of the Autonomous (Autonomous Mobility Community Platform).

Part two will cover an outline of the plenary closing session, which was dedicated to "Powertrains of the future" and in part three we will highlight a selection of the technical lectures.
