According to its mid-term management plan update and 2030 management policy announced by Mazda in November 2022, Mazda Motor Corporation’s (Mazda) electrification strategy will be divided into three phases through 2030 and will be advanced step by step.
In the current first phase (2022-2024), the company will utilize multi-electrification technology to achieve both attractive products and reduced environmental impact. From summer to fall 2022, the CX-60, the first model in its Large Product Group, was launched in the Japanese and European markets, with a PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) model also available. In April 2023, the CX-90 (PHEV and mild hybrid) was launched in the U.S., followed by the PHEV model, the Mazda MX-30 Rotary-EV (model name in Europe: Mazda MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV), in the Japanese and European markets. Also, at the Japan Mobility Show 2023, the compact sports car concept "Mazda Iconic SP" equipped with a 2-rotor rotary-EV system made its world premiere.
In the second phase (2025-2027), the company will begin introducing BEVs in the global market, and in the third phase (2028-2030), it will proceed with the full-scale introduction of BEV-only vehicles, and look to investment in battery production. In June 2023, Mazda announced that it had agreed to enter into discussions on establishing a medium- to long-term partnership with Panasonic Energy Co., Ltd. (Panasonic Energy) to meet demand for battery EVs and automotive batteries.
In the U.S. market, the CX-90 is expected to be followed by the launch of the five-seat CX-70 in the spring of 2024. In the second half of FY2023, production of the Large Product Group will ramp up, and the Alabama plant went to two shifts starting in July, and will operate at full capacity in the fourth quarter to increase production of the CX-50, with plans to sell a record 389,000 units in the U.S. in FY2023.
In the Chinese market, Mazda continues to struggle in the April-September period of 2023. Pre-orders for the CX-50 wide-body compact SUV started in April 2023. The CX-50 HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) model was unveiled for the first time in the world in China and went on sale in November 2023. Changan Mazda Automobile Co., Ltd. (Changan Mazda) will launch two NEV models (BEV and PHEV) developed and produced in China between the end of 2024 and the end of 2025. Mazda is working to maintain its sales network in the Chinese market in preparation for the introduction of the above BEVs (battery electric vehicles) and PHEVs.
