GlobalData European Passenger Car Sales Update (August 2026)
YoY sales strength continues despite lacklustre economy
2026/09/08
Summary
- In August, the Western European Passenger Vehicle (PV) market grew for a seventh consecutive month as sales reached 719k, up 5.6% year-on-year (YoY). The monthly selling rate improved to 14.1 mn units/year, while year-to-date (YTD) sales reached 8.1 mn units, up 5.7% YoY.
- The Western European PV market posted a positive holiday-season performance as sales expanded at an impressive seasonally adjusted annualized rate, although the small contribution of August as a month leads us to more cautious optimism than the rate would otherwise suggest. Further reason for caution comes from the renewed uncertainty over the Strait of Hormuz re-opening date, threatening the energy security of Europe, as fuel prices already hit record highs in September.
- GlobalData has upgraded its 2026 Western European PV forecast to above 12 mn units, up 2.7% from 2025’s full-year result, reflecting stronger actuals despite ongoing geopolitical and economic uncertainty.
