Russian car sales decrease 2.1% in December, decrease 9.1% for 2020

The 166,666 new cars and light commercial vehicles sold in Russia in December represented a decrease 2.1% compared to the same month in 2019 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee.
In all of 2020, 1,598,825 cars were sold in Russia, a 9.1% down from 2019 sales.
Among the four largest OEM retailers in Russia in 2020, Lada sales were down 5.2% to 343,512 units, Kia sales were down 10.7% to 201,727 units, Hyundai sales were down 8.7% to 163,244 units, and Renault sales were down 11.4% to 128,408 units and VW sales were down 4.0% to 100,171 units sold.
The top 3 models sold in 2020 were Lada Granta, Lada Vesta, Kia Rio.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “The Year-end racewith positive sales dynamics in September-November finished below expectations: new vehicle sales in December 2020 decreased by 2,1% vs. December 2019. The recent growth pushed by currency devaluation, post-lockdown effects and increased demand linked to awaited price adaptation has stopped and is followed by a more stable trend with lower market demand. With finally 1,598,825 passenger vehicles and LCVs, 2020 sales are even slightly higher than recent AEB AMC forecast, but still 9,1% below previous year. 2020 was another very challenging year for the Russian automotive business: only 4 months with new vehicle sales above previous year. Despite all difficulties, the sales dynamic 2020 makes Russia one of the best performers among the biggest automotive markets worldwide, and No. 4 in Europe. This year also demonstrates a quite robust position and long-term market commitment of the manufacturers and governmental support is vital for a sustainable automotive business in Russia. For 2021 we do not expect significant changes and forecast a market growth of 2,1%, which is only 33,000 more new passenger cars and LCVs, a total of 1,632,000 cars.”

Russian car sales increase 5.9% in November
The 157,580 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in November 2020 represented an increase of 5.9% compared to the same month in 2019 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on December 4.
The 1,346,351 new cars and LCVs sold in the first eleven months of 2020 represented a decrease of 10.3% over the same period in 2019.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in November 2020, Lada sales were up 21.9% to 38,064 units, Kia sales were up 7.1% to 21,012 units, Hyundai was up 6.9% to 17,446 units, Renault was up 7.9% to 13,852 units , VW was up 11.4% to 10,208 units and Skoda was up 6.8% to 9,666 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in November were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Kia Rio.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “As expected, the strong start of the Year-end race has continued with another month of growth. In November, the new vehicle sales increased by 5,9%, a little less than in October. Since the summer, the weakened Ruble has been pushing the customer demand and, consequently, the sales. The New Year shopping time has started already and expected price adaptations by manufacturers additionally motivate faster purchase decisions. With -10,3% YoY and a strong sales month ahead, the AEB AMC year-end sales forecast of 1,522,000 passenger vehicles and LVCs looks even more realistic. The AMC will announce the final 2020 total sales figures at its annual press conference on January 14, 2021. We wish all our customers, media representatives and partners a happy New Year !”

Russian car sales increase 7.0% in October
The 154,164 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in October 2020 represented an increase of 7.0% compared to the same month in 2019 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on November 6.
The 1,188,771 new cars and LCVs sold in the first ten months of 2020 represented a decrease of 12.1% over the same period in 2019.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in October 2020, Lada sales were up 22.4% to 37,019 units, Kia sales were up 5.3% to 21,217 units, Hyundai was down 2.5% to 15,431 units, Renault was up 5.0% to 14,356 units , Skoda was up 13.5% to 10,101 units and VW was up 5.6% to 9,770 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in October were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Kia Rio.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “Like every year, strong October sales performance starts the Year-end race. With 7% increase of new vehicle sales versus October 2019, the first month of Quarter VI shows highest monthly growth in 2020 so far. This strong result is mainly triggered by the success of the big market players with the domestic production that assures more flexibility in deliveries. With -12,1% YoY, the annual gap versus the last year is getting smaller, expecting two strong months coming. It seems realistic, that the updated AEB AMC year-end sales forecast of 1,522,000 passenger vehicles and LCVs will be met.”

The 1,094,805 new cars and LCVs sold in the first nine months of 2020 represented a decrease of 13.9% over the same period in 2019.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in September 2020, Lada sales were up 11.9% to 35,264 units, Kia sales were up 6.3% to 20,402 units, Hyundai was up 14.5% to 18,380 units, Renault was up 5.1% to 14,007 units and VW was up 11.7% to 10,674 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in September were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Kia Rio.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “Traditionally September is a good month for the automotive business. Besides deferred purchase demand and weakening Ruble, lower travel activities and the state support measures led to the thirdgrowth month this year with an increase of 3,4% versus September 2019. For the first time this year, the biggest players could even outperform the market average and contributed tomore mild YoY decrease of 13,9%. Hoping for a relatively stable fourth quarter without serious business limitations, despite currently worsening pandemic situation, the new AEB AMC 2020 forecast is more positive with 1,522,000 passenger vehicles and LCVs, which means 13,5% decrease YoY.”

Russian car sales decrease 0.5% in August
The 137,517 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in August 2020 represented a decrease of 0.5% compared to the same month in 2019 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on September 4.
The 880,198 new cars and LCVs sold in the first eight months of 2020 represented a decrease of 16.9% over the same period in 2019.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in August 2020, Lada sales were down 4.6% to 28,621 units, Kia sales were up 6.9% to 19,818 units, Hyundai was up 24.2% to 17,462 units, VW was up 33.7% to 11,400 units and Renault was down 15.8% to 10,906 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in August were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Kia Rio.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “After volatile market developments since the beginning of the year, the signs of recovery during last month seem to be over already with a flat new vehicle sales in August of -0,5% versus previous year. Traditionally, this summer month is not a very active one, but further weakening Ruble could have stimulated a continuation of growth. Nevertheless, the decrease of 16,9% YoY August is still better than AEB 2020 forecast of -23,9%. With the state support measures September will provide a more clear indication on the situation of the Russian automotive market and its development toward the year-end.”

Russian car sales increase 6.8% in July

The 141,924 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in July 2020 represented an increase of 6.8% compared to the same month in 2019 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on August 6.
The 742,681 new cars and LCVs sold in the first seven months of 2020 represented a decrease of 19.3% over the same period in 2019.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in July 2020, Lada sales were up 5.7% to 31,180 units, Kia sales were down 4.1% to 18,038 units, Hyundai was up 3.4% to 14,319 units, Skoda was up 68.7% to 12,329 units and Renault was down 1.4% to 11,606 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in July were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Hyundai Creta.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “With an increase of 6.8 %, July is the first month this year with significant growth versus the previous year, which shows signs of the long awaited recovery. This strong performance is fired, on the one hand, by the deferred demand of the previous months of closed operation and, on the other hand, by the weakening Ruble. The current YTD July results show decrease of 19.3%, which is below the AEB 2020 forecast of -23.9%. The good sales results of the total market are also supported by the governmental measures. The sales increase of some brands could be even higher without car stock deficiency linked to the production lock-downs during spring. For the premium market, even better sales dynamics can be assumed. Current market predictability is low due to unknown development of the currency, potential price measures, economic and financial effects and even new potential lock-downs linked to the pandemic situation, which might make further governmental support very important for dealers and manufacturers.”

Russian car sales decrease 14.6% in June
The 122,622 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in June 2020 represented a decrease of 14.6% compared to the same month in 2019 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on July 7.
The 635,959 new cars and LCVs sold in the first half of 2020 represented a decrease of 23.3% over the same period in 2019.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in June 2020, Lada sales were down 8.9% to 28,020 units, Kia sales were down 12.1% to 17,007 units, Hyundai was down 18.1% to 13,373 units, Renault was down 10.4% to 10,704 units and Toyota was down 13.9% to 7,364 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in June were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Kia Rio.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “After two months of sharp vehicle sales decrease, June showed signs of slow return to the previous year performance. Although dealers are operational, state support measures additionally stimulatesales and delayed purchases contribute on top, June still marks a decrease of 14,6% vs. June 2019. These 6 months have been a rollercoaster for manufacturers and dealers with slow climbing in the beginning of the year, followed by a sharp and never experienced downhill April/May and finished by a slow recovery in June. The decrease of 23% YoY June is close to the new AEB 2020 forecast of 1 339K sold cars, which is also a decrease of 23,9%. The new forecast relies on continuation of state support for customers purchase motivation and no second pandemic wave.”

Russian car sales decrease 51.8% in May
The 63,033 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in May 2020 represented a decrease of 51.8% compared to the same month in 2019 due to coronavirus pandemic according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on June 4.
The 478,135 new cars and LCVs sold in the first five months of 2020 represented a decrease of 25.7% over the same period in 2019.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in May 2020, Lada sales were down 45.8% to 15,580 units, Kia sales were down 58.9% to 8,008 units, Hyundai was down 56.5% to 6,477 units, Renault was down 46.8% to 5,640 units and Toyota was down 43.1% to 4,486 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in May were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Kia Rio.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “Again this month we see a strong decrease in new vehicle sales by -51.8% versus May 2019, which is not a surprise because showrooms of Moscow, St Petersburg and most of the regional dealers continued to be closed the entire month. Workshops could re-start their operations and consequently customer traffic gained some momentum. We hope that with the recent release of the restrictions in most of the country June will show slight improvement of the situation and contribute to the sustainability of the dealer network. The implementation of first governmental support measures should contribute to a slow market recovery in the second half of the year.”

Russian car sales decrease 72.4% in April
The 38,922 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in April 2020 represented a decrease of 72.4% compared to the same month in 2020 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on May 12.
The 415,102 new cars and LCVs sold in the first four months of 2020 represented a decrease of 19.1% over the same period in 2019.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in April 2020, Lada sales were down 70.9% to 9,396 units, Kia sales were down 78.1% to 4,334 units, Renault was down 75.0% to 3,135 units, VW was down 67.6% to 3,093 units and Skoda was down 58.7% to 3,041 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in April were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Kia Rio.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “After exceptionally high March sales, in April 2020, dealer operations forced to be stopped or extremely limited with the COVID-19 coronavirus related lockdown situation. With -72,4 % sale decrease compared to same month last year, the Russian automotive industry experienced the strongest monthly sales decrease in the AEB statistics history. “Black April” 2020 strongly challenged dealer liquidity and mid-term even their sustainability. New reality forces all of us to try different creative communication and sales formats to stay close to customers. Dealers are preparing for restart, although I do not expect much better sales results in May.”

Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in March 2020, Lada sales were down 3.0% to 32,808 units, Kia sales were up 1.3% to 19,808 units, Hyundai was down 3.1% to 15,813 units, Renault was up 4.5% to 13,640 units and Toyota was up 36.5% to 12,587 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in March were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Kia Rio.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “March was a strong month with unexpected sales increase of 4% compared to the same month last year, resulting in a 1,8% growth for the first quarter compared to the same period last year. Many brands enjoyed even double digit growth in March. This strong start of the year unfortunately does not represent a growth trend, but is rather linked to artificially high anticipated sales in March, resulting from the weakening currency. Since end of March car sales and dealer operations have been sharply interrupted, following the measures related to the situation with COVID-19. The AEB appealed to the Government proposing state support measures for the automotive industry. Many manufacturers are also developing comprehensive support measures for their dealers to sustain future business operations.”

Russian car sales decrease 2.2% in February
The 119,073 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in February 2020 represented a decrease of 2.2% compared to the same month in 2019 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on March 5.
The 218,442 new cars and LCVs sold in the first two months of 2020 represented a decrease of 0.5% over the same period in 2019.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in February 2020, Lada sales were down 7.4% to 25,002 units, Kia sales were down 3.5% to 17,107 units, Hyundai was up 0.8% to 14,368 units, Renault was up 19.1% to 10,123 units and Toyota was up 16.6% to 8,239 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in February were the Lada Granta, Kia Rio and Lada Vesta.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “February market sales show a 2% decline compared to the same month one year ago, in line with market expectations. Considering however that a number of brands have stopped sharing their sales data on a monthly basis (anywhere in the world including for Russia), the whole market picture is not quite complete at this point. Next month the AEB will publish a quarterly sales report which is expected to reflect cumulative sales results of allbrands represented in Russia during the first 3 months of 2020. ”
