Russian car sales decrease 19.9% in December, increase 4.3% in 2021
According to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on January 13, the 133,470 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in December 2021 represented a decrease of 19.9% compared to the same month in 2020.
The 1,666,780 new cars and LCVs sold in 2021 represented an increase of 4.3% over 2020.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in 2021, Lada sales were up 2.1% to 350,714 units, Kia sales were up 2.0% to 205,801 units, Hyundai sales were up 2.5% to 167,331 units, Renault sales were up 2.4% to 131,552 units and Toyota sales were up 6.9% to 97,941 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in 2021 were the Lada Vesta, Lada Granta and Kia Rio.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee, said, “The positive figures 2021 result from the growth dynamics of only the second quarter 2021 versus the same period of 2020 with lockdown effects. The negative trend of the last two quarters ended up in December with a huge decrease of 19,9%. In December 2021, only 133 470 cars were sold. All this is a result of negative market effects of global factors, such as deficit of electronic components, logistics problems, supply chains breaks, increase in costs of materials, etc. There is no sign of a rapid improvement of the situation. Since 2015, the Russian automotive market is quite stable remaining between 1,4 and 1,8 mn vehicles. Assuming that all the negative factors will not be resolved during the main part of 2022, the Committee believes that the car market will not change much and forecasts an increase of 3,3% with the total sale of cars and LCVs of 1 722 000 units.”

Russian car sales decrease 20.4% in November

According to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on December 6, the 125,466 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in November 2021 represented a decrease of 20.4% compared to the same month in 2020.
The 1,439,045 new cars and LCVs sold in the first eleven months of 2021 represented an increase of 6.9% over the same period in 2020.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in November 2021, Lada sales were down 30.7% to 26,373 units, Kia sales were down 30.9% to 14,514 units, Hyundai sales were down 17.5% to 14,395 units, Renault sales were down 14.5% to 11,837 units and Toyota sales were down 7.2% to 7,606 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in November were the Lada Vesta, Lada Granta and Hyundai Creta.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee, said, “Usually, December is a good month for car sales, but this year is different and it also seems that this trend will continue during the next year with even worse figures in the coming months. On top of all negative market factors, such as production decrease, deficit of semiconductors and logistics problems, the Government initiates legal acts, which might make the situation even worse – the published draft Order of the Government envisages almost 9 times increase of the disposal fee for e-vehicles. Together with the announced non-extension of the zero import duty on e-vehicles, this measure will substantially undermine the development of this market segment, which has just started to grow in Russia. Unfortunately, this measure has not been discussed with the industry. We believe that the adoption of this Order will increase prices of e-vehicles for end-customers and slow down their sales dynamic as well as the development of the charging infrastructure. The final Year 2021 results will be announced at our annual press-conference on 13 January 2022, where we will try to give an industry outlook for the next year.”

Russian car sales decrease 18.1% in October
According to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on November 8, the 126,204 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in October 2021 represented a decrease of 18.1% compared to the same month in 2020.
The 1,313,579 new cars and LCVs sold in the first ten months of 2021 represented an increase of 10.5% over the same period in 2020.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in October 2021, Lada sales were down 30.9% to 25,573 units, Kia sales were down 24.5% to 16,027 units, Hyundai sales were down 14.7% to 13,162 units, Renault sales were down 36.2% to 9,165 units and Toyota sales were up 5.8% to 8,516 units.
The 3 best-selling models sold in October were the Lada Vesta, Lada Granta and Kia Rio.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee, said, “There is still a long way to overcome the global production shortage and new problems with logistics due to breaks of the supply chains.” “Positive and worth mentioning is that, despite of all the difficulties, the BEV segment continues its growth with the year to date sales of 845 vehicles, which is already 118 % higher than the total sales of 2020. The positive BEV sales dynamic fosters the development of the charging infrastructure and helps distributors to bring more and also more affordable BEV models to the Russian market. Of course, the rising BEV market segment can be later occupied by locally produced models. This positive development could be significantly undermined by a non-prolongation of 0-import customs duty for BEVs during the next years with then BEV prices increase, leading to decline of customer demand and respective stagnation of the BEV sales dynamic. Also some OEMs might delay there BEV model launches in Russia due to higher cost for smaller than planned sales volumes. Therefore, our Committee is convinced that the prolongation of the 0-import customs duty for BEVs is mutually beneficial for all market participants and the Government.

Russian car sales decrease 22.6% in September

According to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on October 6, the 119,485 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in September 2021 represented a decrease of 22.6% compared to the same month in 2020. The 1,260,111 new cars and LCVs sold in the first nine months of 2021 represented an increase of 15.1% over the same period in 2020.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in September 2021, Lada sales were down 51.3% to 17,189 units, Kia sales were down 16.5% to 17,037 units, Hyundai was down 25.9% to 13,624 units, Toyota was up 18.2% to 10,039 units and VW was down 27.4% to 7,752 units and.
The 3 bestselling models sold in September were the Lada Vesta, Kia Rio and Hyndai Solaris.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee, said, “The known strong car deficit in the market, linked to production shortage and the worldwide semi-conductor problem as well as other new disturbing influencers like energy crisis in China and Great Britain, rise of raw material cost and others will support the negative trend also during the next months. The market situation is very uncertain at the moment, but the AMC will try to revise its market forecast 2021 in November. In September, we experienced a significant drop in car sales with -17% as compared to September 2020. Whereas the demand situation remains stable, the production cuts resulting from the worldwide lack of electronic components continue increasing the gap between demand and supply thus negatively influencing the sales figures. As there is no sign of a soon resolution of this situation, we expect volatile sales situation and further market decrease in the next few months. YoY results still remain positive. For the period from January to September 2021 1,067,890 new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles were sold, which is 21.3% higher than last year. With the existing trend we so far keep our year end forecast (+9.8%) unchanged but will evaluate it again after the third quarter.”

Russian car sales decrease 6.5% in July
The 132,640 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in July 2021 represented a decrease of 6.5% compared to the same month in 2020 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on August 5.
The 953,760 new cars and LCVs sold in the first seven months of 2021 represented an increase of 28.4% over the same period in 2020.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in July 2021, Lada sales were up 2.7% to 32,013 units, Kia sales were down 5.4% to 17,071 units, Hyundai was down 6.5% to 13,383 units, Renault was down 3.3% to 11,223 units and Skoda was down 35.8% to 7,921 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in July were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Kia Rio.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “As stated in the June press-release, we experienced this month a slight market downturn YoY. In July 2021 132,640 PCs and LCVs were sold which is 6,5% less than the strong July 2020 (after the lift of pandemic restrictions). In January - July 2021 953,760 cars were sold which is still a 28,4% increase in comparison with the same period of previous year. The next months will show further corrections linked to limiting effects of worldwide production cuts following the shortage of electronic components.”

Russian car sales increase 28.7% in June
The 157,808 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in June 2021 represented an increase of 28.7% compared to the same month in 2020 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on July 6.
The 870,749 new cars and LCVs sold in the first half of 2021 represented an increase of 36.9% over the same period in 2020.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in June 2021, Lada sales were up 43.1% to 40,096 units, Hyundai sales were up 43.6% to 19,204 units, Kia was up 10.5% to 18,801 units, Renault was up 23.9% to 13,265 units and VW was up 35.3% to 10,220 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in June were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Hyndai Creta.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “In June 2021 157,808 PCs and LCVs were sold, which is 28.7% more than in June 2020 and also +9.8% as compared to June 2019. In the first half year 2021, 870,749 cars were sold - an increase of 36.9% vs the same period of the previous year and 5.1% versus 2019. As earlier stated, the market shows better dynamics than expected. Postponement of the disposal fee increase supported the market and helped slowing cars prices increase. The COVID-19 situation is worsening, but we hope that we manage to escape a complete lockdown. Despite of the difficulties with the semi-conductors supply and metal prices increase, we believe to prevent a drop down in 2021 sales and we will see corrections in the months to come. The Committee has a positive outlook of this year market development and, as announced, updates its annual sales forecast: in 2021, 1,756 k passenger cars and light commercial vehicles will be sold which is 9.8% higher than previous year. This means, we have corrected our forecast from 2.1% to 9.8% increase.”

Russian car sales increase 133.8% in May
The 147,378 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in May 2021 represented an increase of 133.8% compared to the same month in 2020 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on June 4.
The 663,312 new cars and LCVs sold in the first five months of 2021 represented an increase of 38.7% over the same period in 2020.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in May 2021, Lada sales were up 145.7% to 38,284 units, Kia sales were up 135.0% to 18,818 units, Hyundai was up 151.1% to 16,261 units, Renault was up 121.3% to 12,482 units and Skoda was up 230.5% to 9,561 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in May were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Kia Rio.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “May 2021 new vehicle sales growth is on the expected very high level compared to same month of previous year, especially for the volume leaders. In his month 147,378 new passenger cars and LCVs were sold, which is 133.8% increase versus same period last year and also 6.7% in comparison to May 2019 increase (about 10,000 cars plus). YTD May 2021 is 38.7% higher than previous year period, including the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown effect in 2020. The same situation we will observe in June, but we will see more realistic YOY monthly comparison from July on. During the summer months, we will also see the effect of limited supply driven by the worldwide shortage of electronic components. Therefore,we expect lower new vehicle sales of most of the brands compared to the currently high customer demand. With the state support of the customers and manufacturers we may hope for the positive completion of the year. The AEB AMC will renew its annual forecast with the next press release.”

Russian car sales increase 290.4% in April
The 151,964 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in April 2021 represented an increase of 290.4% compared to the same month in 2020 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on May 12.
The 515,934 new cars and LCVs sold in the first three months of 2021 represented an increase of 24.3% over the same period in 2020.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in April 2021, Lada sales were up 303.7% to 37,931 units, Kia sales were up 340.7% to 19,101 units, Hyundai was up 538.2% to 15,483 units, Renault was up 345.2% to 13,957 units and Skoda was up 240.8% to 10,365 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in April were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Kia Rio.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “April 2021 new car sales are 151,964 units and 290.4% higher than the “Black April” of the last year. Especially the four biggest local manufacturers show above-market performance compared to the same month of the last year when the lockdown affected them most. The total sales of the first four months 2021 are 515,934 units and, as expected, 24.3% higher than 2020, but 4.5% below the sales of the same period of 2019. So far, the sales achievement of this year supports our year-end forecast of 2.1 % sales increase vs. last year, but, with the market getting its real trace, the AMC will be able to update its annual forecast in July. The state support measures are still needed to further stabilize the customer demand and the business. ”

Russian car sales decrease 5.7% in March
The 148,676 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in March 2021 represented a decrease of 5.7% compared to the same month in 2020 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on April 6.
The 387,322 new cars and LCVs sold in the first three months of 2021 represented a decrease of 2.8% over the same period in 2020.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in March 2021, Lada sales were up 3.0% to 33,779 units, Kia sales were up 1.3% to 20,057 units, Hyundai was down 3.0% to 15,332 units, Renault was down 14.5% to 11,659 units and Toyota was down 18.3% to 10,278 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in March were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Kia Rio.
Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “In March 2021, 148,676 cars were sold, which is 5.7% less than in March 2020. However, it is worth mentioning that March 2020 was the best month last year before the lockdown in April. In Q1 this year, 387,322 cars were sold that is 2.8% less than last year. It is obvious that the next couple of months will remedy the situation and the market will demonstrate growth, because we will compare results of the nearest months with the worst ever months in the automobile industry linked with business limitations due to the coronavirus pandemic. In general, the market situation is of no surprise. Purchase interest slightly decreases while prices increase, in some cases there is still a deficit in offer of certain models. Uncertainty with the disposal fee increase does not help the market either. The mass segment is slowing down most of all. From now on, the AEB press release provides additional information on sales of SUVs, LCVs, Pick-ups and BEVs. The data shows that SUVs build close to a half of the market as the most favorite car type of Russian customers. ”

We still expect that with stronger February and March sales, so the first quarter will be on the level of previous year. Five top selling brands are showing relative stability. Interesting is the strong growth of some brands and that for the first time Korean brand model positioned in the top of the table.”
