Canadian vehicle sales down 8.9% in August
On September 1, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants (DAC) announced that new light vehicle sales in August were estimated to be down 8.9% from August 2019 levels, notably not too far from the 4.9% decline seen in July.
Sales reached an estimated total of 165,837 units sold in August 2020, down from the estimated 182,040 units sold in the same month of 2019.
August sales were within approximately 900 units of July’s total.
According to Scotiabank, given fleet sales are still depressed, the retail sales rebound is even stronger, showing signs of not only pent-up demand, but also pandemicmotivated purchases.
Scotiabank maintain its sales forecast outlook at 1.6 mn units for 2020 with some further upside from these new policy supports along with the stronger economic recovery profile, but still note considerable downside risks on the horizon, particularly south of the border.

The fact that Canadian estimated new vehicle sales of 165,020 units in July 2020 represented a 4.9% drop from July 2019 was very good news, as it also represented an increase of 6.2% from the previous month of June, according to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants.
These sales figures rank July 2020 as the seventh best July in Canadian automotive history.
The extent to which this sales success was pent-up demand from the brutal sales collapse in April, versus a more sustainable recovery, remains to be seen.
May and June sales had increased an estimated 147.0% and 37.3%, respectively, over the previous months.
Monthly sales totals are estimates now that the vast majority of OEMs have stopped reporting on a monthly basis and now issue quarterly reports.
One company that did report its monthly July 2020 sales was Subaru, which posted its best July sales ever with 5,678 vehicles sold, representing a 10.1% increase compared to the same month in 2019 and making it the brand's third best month ever.
Subaru’s YTD sales in the first seven months of 2020, however, were down 26.8% from the same period in 2019 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Canadian vehicle sales decrease 44.2% in May
Canadian vehicle sales of 113,224 units in May decreased 44.2% from the 202,800 units sold in the same month in 2019.
Sales for the first five months of 2020, totaled 488,165 unites, a decrease 38.9% from the 799,423 units sold in the same period last year.
According to Scotiabank, the plunge in Canadian auto sales decelerated in May with a decline of “only” 45% y/y. April should mark the abyss of the pandemic-induced auto sales contraction. As dealerships across the country began tentatively opening in mid-May, vehicle sales accelerated with month-over-month purchases up by 127% (sa) by month-end. The strength and sustainability of the rebound will depend, in part, on job recoveries.

Canadian vehicle sales of 45,833 units in April decreased 75.2% from the 185,158 units sold in the same month in 2019.
Sales for the first four months of 2020, totaled 374,941 unites, a decrease 37.2% from the 596,623 units sold in the same period last year.
According to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants (DAC), while its records are incomplete, it believes the number of new vehicles sold in April is the month’s lowest sales total since 1951.
“This could mean that April 2020 results brought us to the bottom of this chasm and the first tentative steps of recovery can potentially start as early as (this) month,” said DesRosiers.

Canadian vehicle sales of 96,117 units in March decreased 47.1% from the 181,800 units sold in the same month in 2019.
SUV and pickup sales, at 77,064 units, were down 42.2% in March, while passenger car sales, at 19,053 units, were down 60.7% compared to 2019.
Combined sales in March for the Detroit Big 3 were 146,070 units.
In the first quarter 2020, General Motors, Ford, and FCA estimated sales decreased 12.8%, 13.8%, and 18.8%, respectively.
Among German companies’ sales, Mercedes-Benz sales were down 22.2%, BMW brand sales were down 29.7%, VW brand sales were down 20.4%, and Audi sales were down 22.5% compared to the same quarter last year.
Among Japanese automakers, Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Subaru were down 18.6%, 31.2%, 36.4%, and 12.7% respectively.
Hyundai and Kia reported that their actual sales were down 15.0% and 15.2%, respectively.
“Sales through the first portion of the quarter appeared to be actually pretty good,” said David Adams, President, Global Automakers of Canada. “As the full impact of the COVID-19 virus became apparent in mid-March, and dealers either were forced to shut down due to emergency measures enacted, or voluntarily shut down due to minimal consumer traffic, the impact on sales has been dramatic,” added Adams.

On March 3, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants DAC estimated that February new light vehicle sales in Canada increased, continuing the positive showing seen in January.
In light of more manufacturers continuing the trend of quarterly reporting from their sales organizations, total February 2020 sales settled at an estimated 123,375 units, a 2.1% increase from February 2019 when 120,891 total units were sold.
As with the established trend, February 2020 passenger car sales struggled with an estimated 26,875 units sold for the month, falling 10.8% from February 2019’s sales of 30,124 units.
A roughly six thousand unit increase in light truck sales proved to be sufficient in overcoming the losses in passenger car sales, and pointed the market upwards overall.
An estimated 96,500 SUV and pickups were sold in February, rising 6.3% above the 90,767 unit figure recorded in the same month last year.
Passenger car sales accounted for 21.8% of total monthly sales while light trucks claimed 78.2%.
Scotiabank estimates that Canadian light vehicle seasonally adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) for February 2020 was approximately 1.98 million units.
Despite decent job and wage performance, Canadian consumption has remained soft. The emergence of COVID-19 will likely introduce further volatility and at least temporary dampening in auto sales in the coming months.
