On January 3, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants announced that the Canadian automotive market had the largest yearly sales increase since 1997, bolstered by improved vehicle supply, especially in H2 2023, and pent-up demand, from the million units of “lost sales” from 2020-22, that was strong enough to overcome high interest rates and economic worries.
With strong December sales at an estimated 120,698 units (up 10.7% from the same month in 2022) the market has now seen 14 consecutive months of YoY growth – with sales up across all provinces.
Final sales for 2023 from reporting manufacturers came in at 1.664 million units in 2023, up 11.8% from the 1.489 million units sold in 2022.
Sales of light trucks continued to increase over passenger cars, with trucks reaching a record market share of 85.8% for the year.
The fourth quarter was particularly robust with sales up 17.2% and the SAAR regularly tracking at levels near or above 1.8 million units.
As of December 13, Scotiabank expected 1.71 million annual auto sales in 2024 and 1.785 million annual auto sales in 2025.

Canadian auto sales up 20.7% in November, with YTD sales surpassing 2022 totals
On December 4, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants announced that Canadian car sales in November, estimated from reporting OEMs came in at an estimated 138,747 units, up 20.7% from the same month in 2022.
November was the thirteenth straight month of 2023 with over year gains, as well as the largest percentage gain seen so far in 2023, although it was still below the pre-pandemic November market of 143,315 in 2019.
The SAAR for the November came in at 1.82 million, the highest it has been since March 2021.
Canadian year-to-date sales have already surpassed full-year 2022 sales of 1.49 million units, with December still to come.
As of November 8, Scotiabank expected 1.63 million annual auto sales in 2023 and 1.71 million annual auto sales in 2024.

Canadian auto sales up 20.0% in October, marking 12 months of consecutive increases
On November 2, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants announced that Canadian car sales in October, estimated from reporting OEMs came in at 145,957 units, up 20.0% from the same month in 2022.
For comparison sake, sales in October 2022 were quite weak, a situation brought on by vehicle model availability affected by supply chain issues that had made it the worst October since 2009.
However, this October’s results have now made it 12 consecutive months of sales increases compared to the previous year, prompting Andrew King, Managing Partner of DAC to note that “The market has been on a tear the last 3 months with gains close to 20% each month.”
The SAAR for October came in at 1.79 million – the strongest monthly number since January.
As of October 17, Scotiabank revised down its full-year 2023 forecast for Canada from 1.67 million to 1.63 million units and its 2024 forecast from 1.75 million to 1.71 million units from its August 14 forecast.
This is attributed the pace of auto sales has slowed from the recent peak in late spring and early summer as rising vehicle prices and elevated financing rates continue to weigh on vehicle affordability.

Canadian auto sales up 19.0% in September, Q3 and YTD figures higher
On October 4, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants announced that Canadian sales in September came in at 155,259 units, up 19.0% from the same month in 2022 and higher than the 18.3% gain in August.
Andrew King, Managing Partner of DAC, commented “improved vehicle availability is making a real impact on the market, allowing pent-up demand to be released and easily outweighing any down-drafts from high interest rates and a weak economic environment.”
The SAAR for September was 1.77 million, the highest this year since January.
For the third quarter of 2023 among major corporations, GM sales were up 12.4%, Toyota was up 20.4%, Honda was up 31.7%, Nissan was up 36.6%, and the VW was up 7.9%, while FCA was the only one showing negative numbers, down 0.6%.
Similarly for year-to-date figures, GM sales were up 14.6%, Toyota was up 5.8%, Honda was up 19.2%, Nissan was up 17.1%, and the VW was up 14.6%, with FCA down 1.2% from the same period in 2022.

Canadian auto sales jump 18.3% in August
On September 6, DesRosiers Automotve Consultants reported that August new light vehicle sales among reporting manufacturers in Canada came at an estimated 149,697 units, up 18.3% from the same month in 2022.
“Fueled by improved vehicle availability and pent-up demand from the 1.1 million ‘lost sales’ that never happened in 2020-2022, the market in August performed strongly,” said Andrew King, Managing Partner of DAC.
While August 2022 was a very weak month for comparative purposes, as supply constraints affected auto production, last month’s sales numbers makes it now ten consecutive months with year-over-year market growth.
The SAAR for August was 1.65 million units, the highest level in 2023 since February and a positive sign of market momentum in Canada.

Canadian auto sales climb 13.5% in May
On June 2, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants reported that an estimated 159,705 units were sold in Canada in May 2023, 10.9% more than the previous month of April 2023, and a hefty 13.5% gain from one year ago in May 2022.
The SAAR for May came in at 1.54 million units, ending a 3-month trend of consecutive declines in the earlier part of 2023, with improved vehicle availability across a broader array of manufacturers.
While historically the strongest sales month of the year, May 2023 sales still show themselves to be 21.3% below the 202,800 units sold in May 2019.
Scotiabank raised its March outlook, forecasting full-year Canadian sales will be 1.7 million units in 2023 and 1.83 million in 2024, respectively.

Canadian auto sales up 2.3% in April
On May 3, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants reported that an estimated 144,069 units were sold in Canada in April 2023, slightly below the March 2023 total and a gain of only 2.3% from April 2022.
The SAAR for April came in at only 1.48 million units, showing itself to be the weakest month so far in 2023 after 6 consecutive months of percentage increases.
It remains to be seen whether April sales represent a trend of stalling sales for 2023, or are at least partially the result of late winter season storms.
Scotiabank anticipates that full-year Canadian sales will be 1.65 million units in 2023 and 1.8 million units in 2024, respectively.

Canadian auto sales rise 5.1% in February
On March 2, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants reported that an estimated 103,771 units were sold in Canada in February 2023, a 5.1% increase from the same month in 2022.
February’s gain, however, shows the automotive market achieving year over year gains in four straight months, since November 2022, as the breadth of improved vehicle availability gradually widens, and consumer spending remains resilient.
The SAAR for February came in at 1.70 million units.
Scotiabank anticipates that full-year Canadian sales will be 1.65 million units in 2023 and 1.8 million units in 2024, respectively.

On February 2, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants reported that an estimated 98,259 units were sold in Canada in January 2023, up 7.5% from the 91,411 units in the same month in 2022.

The fact that January 2023 was stronger than the year before is welcome news, though January 2022 was the strongest SAAR of any month (at 1.67 million units) of all of last year.
