Canadian auto sales rise 4.1% in November
On December 2, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc. reported that estimated light vehicle sales in Canada for the month of November were up 4.1% from the same month in 2021 to 114,966 units.
However, November 2021 was a noticeably weak month with sales of only 110,448 units – compared to sales of 143,315 units in November 2019 before the COVID pandemic.
The SAAR for November 2022 reached 1.51 million, a slight improvement from the summer months, but still below the levels seen in Q1 2022.
While November 2022 did show a gain in sales, the YTD total now stands at only 1.38 million units sold, making it likely that the year will finish below 1.5 million units.
If it does, it will be first year the market has fallen below 1.5 million units since 2009.

Canadian auto sales drop 5.3% in October
On November 2, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc. reported October vehicle sales for Canada.
Estimated sales in Canada for the month of October were 121,653 units, down 5.3% from an already weak October 2021, and the lowest for October sales since the 121,500 units of 2009.
October 2022 sales were down 6.7% from the 130,421 sales in the previous month of September.
The SAAR came in at 1.49 million for the month of October.
Andrew King, Managing Partner of DAC noted that while the past 2 months have shown improvement from the low performance levels of the May-August period, however the market continues to struggle until the recovery by a wider group of manufactures becomes more visible.
Still, Scotiabank is hopeful in the short term, even though it says a “technical recession” is underway.
“Sales in Canada have been weak this year, but the economy still has some near-term momentum, which benefits auto demand in the context of heightened uncertainties,” the bank said in its latest Global Auto Report.

Canadian auto sales down 16.2% in July
On August 4, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants announced that sales for July 2022 of 130,480 units represented a decline of 16.2% from the same month one year ago as the majority of OEMs still struggle with disrupted semiconductor supply chains and empty dealer lots.

The SAAR for the month of July was 1.45 million units, broadly in line with levels seen during Q2 2022.
DesRosiers says the recovery from the chip shortage will be “uneven and unequal,” but didn’t say when the shortage might end.
Scotibank Economics said in its late-July Global Auto Report that Canadian demand for new vehicles “should remain resilient over the course of 2022 and 2023.” But, there aren’t enough vehicles to meet consumer needs.
Scotiabank estimates automakers will sell 1.65 million new vehicles in 2022, down from the 1.66 million sold a year ago.

Canadian auto sales down 8.5% in May
On June 2, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants announced that the 140,725 light vehicle sales for the month of May, down only slightly from April 2022, but an 8.5% drop from May 2021.
The fact that sales in May 2019 were in excess of 202,000 units shows how far the market remains down from its potential as vehicles on dealer lots continue to be in short supply.
The SAAR for May reached only 1.36 million units, down from the April SAAR of 1.44 million units.
The SAAR has continued to fall each month throughout 2022—from 1.67 million in January to the 1.36 million now in May—indicating that the market supply situation appears to be worsening.

Canadian auto sales fall 13.3% in April
On May 4, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants announced that the 140,785 light vehicle sales for the month of April, were down 13.3% from April 2021, yet were up 0.2% from the 140,460 sales the previous month in March.
The short supply of vehicles on dealer lots, due to production constraints caused by the ongoing semiconductor shortage and other supply chain issues, continues.
The SAAR for April reached only 1.44 million units, down from the March SAAR of 1.54 million units.
One year ago, April 2021 marked the first month in which the semiconductor shortage hit the market in a measurable way, and a year later the same issues persist.
The SAAR for April 2021 had fallen from a healthy 1.92 million in March 2021 to 1.66 million, and has not recovered since, despite market demand that is at least 2 million units.

Sales as estimated by DAC came in at 98,722 units, compared to the 112,654 units sold in February 2021, which was noted then to be a reasonably strong month.
The SAAR for February 2022 came in at 1.62 million units, down from last February’s 1.85 million units, but broadly in line with the levels seen over the last 10 months.

Canadian auto sales increase 0.6% in January
On February 2, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants announced that Canadian automotive sales in January 2022 were almost flat from the previous year, registering an increase of 0.6% to an estimated 91,411 units, compared to the 90,890 units sold in January 2021.
While January is usually the lowest sales month of the year in Canada, the very slight increase portends a hopeful year even though the discrepancy between market demand and market supply caused by production disruptions still persists.
The SAAR for January 2022 matches the same 1.66 million units for January 2021, and shows a definite improvement from the previous two months in November and December 2021.
