Daimler: major advanced features
(1)
Sailing (coasting) function
When the driver eases off the accelerator at speeds up to 160 km/h and turns on the sailing function switch, the engine will be decoupled from the rest of the powertrain. This allows the vehicle to coast without engine braking for improved fuel efficiency. The system is equipped on the hybrid models of the S-Class.
(2)
Magic Body Control
This is the world's first suspension which monitors the road condition ahead. With a stereo camera fitted in the windshield mirror housing, the system scans the road contours up to 15 meters ahead of the vehicle and, to overcome unevenness, adjusts the damping of each suspension in advance within fractions of a second.
(3)
LED Intelligent Light System
The S-Class uses LEDs for all onboard lamps and employs the LED Intelligent Light System for its headlamps. The system's Adaptive Highbeam Assist PLUS function monitors vehicles in front and oncoming vehicles with a stereo camera. It automatically and continuously adjusts the highbeam headlamp range so that other drivers on the surrounding vehicles would not be dazzled.
(4)
Beltbag
In the event of a frontal collision, the beltbag, available in both of the outer rear seats, inflates the belt strap to nearly three times its normal width to reduce the impact force on the occupant's shoulders and chest and thereby lower the risk of injury.
Active seat-belt buckle  When the rear doors are opened, the active seat-belt buckle, available in both of the outer rear seats, is raised by five centimeters with an illuminated insertion slot to allow better access. After the seat-belt tongue is secured in the buckle, an electric motor automatically retracts the buckle to reduce any belt slack in the area of the pelvis and thorax so that passengers are secured more firmly.
Cushionbag  This is an airbag fitted under the cushion upholstery of a reclining seat. When the seat is reclined, it prevents the occupant from sliding forward beneath the seatbelt (so-called submarining) in an accident.
(5)
Distronic Plus with Steering Assist
The Distronic Plus uses a radar sensor to monitor vehicles in front and maintains a desired distance automatically. The system decelerates a vehicle when required and brings it to a standstill if the vehicle ahead stops. With its additional Steering Assist function, the stereo camera and radar sensor system monitor the curve of the lane markings and the vehicle in front. The function helps the driver steer the vehicle to stay centered in the lane. (When driving at slow speeds, e.g. in congested traffic, the Steering Assist can use the preceding vehicle as a means of orientation, even if the lane markings are not visible.)
(6)
BAS Plus with Cross Traffic Assist
When the radar sensor system and stereo camera detect imminent collisions with vehicles in front as well as cross traffic at junctions, pedestrians and obstacles, the system notifies the driver by activating visual and acoustic warnings. If the driver presses the brake pedal too tentatively, the BAS (Brake Assist) Plus automatically boosts brake pressure to avoid a collision. The Cross Traffic Assist is active at speeds up to 72 km/h.
(7)
Pre-Safe Brake
This collision mitigation brake system is effective for avoiding collisions at speeds up to 50 km/h. The latest system detects not only vehicles in front but also pedestrians ahead.
(8)
Rear-end Collision Prevention Assist
The system uses the millimeter-wave radar sensor in the rear bumper to monitor the distance from and the speed of the vehicle behind. When an imminent rear-end impact is detected, the system warns the following vehicle by flashing the rear combination lamps. When a vehicle is at a stop, the system firmly applies the breaking to minimize the risk of whiplash injuries and to prevent secondary accidents.
(9)
Night View Assist Plus with a spotlight function
When driving at night, the system uses the thermal imaging camera to detect pedestrians and animals ahead of the vehicle. It alerts the driver to the potential danger by automatically switching the display on the center of the instrument panel to a night view image and superimposes red lights on the sources of danger. Its additional spotlight function is able to flash any pedestrians detected ahead to warn both the driver and the pedestrians.
(10)
Emergency Call System
The emergency call system is available with the latest version of the COMAND Online infotainment system. If the airbags are deployed in the accidents, the vehicle's exact GPS position and vehicle identification number will be sent to the Bosch Communication Center. Even if the occupants are unconscious or unsure of exactly where they are, the emergency service will be sent immediately. (In Europe, it will be mandatory for all new models of passenger cars and light duty vehicles to install the automated emergency call system from October 2015.)

BMW: major advanced features
(1)
Park Assist
The latest version of the Park Assist will be available on the X5 from December 2013. The system maneuvers the vehicle into a parking space not only by steering but also by operating the accelerator and brake pedal and selecting the appropriate gear. These latter operations are conventionally handled by the driver. When the system has been activated at the press of a button, the vehicle therefore can find a suitable parallel parking space and park itself automatically in the selected space.
(2)
Night Vision with Dynamic Light Spot
The Night Vision uses the thermal imaging camera in the front grill to scan people, sizeable animals and other heat-radiating objects up to 300 meters ahead of the vehicle. It relays a video image to the control display and provides a warning if there is a collision risk. The Dynamic Light Spot function "spotlights" any persons or animals detected by the system, thereby alerting the driver to potential risks at an early stage.
(3)
Traffic Jam Assist
Available on the X5 from December 2013, this system not only maintains a safe distance from the vehicle ahead but also keeps the vehicle in the center of its lane by providing active steering input in the traffic jam on the motorways. It is active at speeds up to 40 km/h.
(4)
Collision/Pedestrian Warning with braking function
The system detects preceding vehicles and, at speeds up to 60 km/h, also pedestrians who are on a potential collision course with the vehicle. Visual and audible warnings are given if a hazard is detected and at the same time the brake system is primed. At speeds up to 60 km/h, moderate "hazard" braking is actuated to reduce vehicle speed and alert the driver to a critical situation.
(5)
Proactive Driving Assistant
This function is included in the Eco Pro Mode, a fuel efficient driving mode among the selective driving modes. In conjunction with the optional Navigation system Professional, the function tells the driver exactly when to ease off the accelerator when approaching corners, roundabouts, and speed-restricted sections of road to save fuel.

VW: major advanced features
(1)
Driver profile selection
This is a driving mode selection system, which allows the driver to choose from four modes: Eco, Sport, Normal and Individual. (With a DSG dual clutch gear box, a fifth option, Comfort, is also offered). Each of these modes alters the throttle mapping and engine management to the chosen style.
(2)
Automatic Post-Collision Braking System
When the airbag sensors detect the frontal and rear-end collisions, the system automatically applies brakes to reduce the speed of the vehicle to less than 10 km/h, thereby minimizing the risk of a secondary collision. A new innovation in the VW compact segment.
(3)
Park assist
The system not only makes parallel parking easier, but helps the driver reverse park into a space at 90 degrees to the curb. It uses ultrasonic sensors to find a parking space and steers the vehicle into the chosen space. All the driver has to do is select the gear and operate the accelerator and brake pedal. The system installed on the Skoda Octavia also steers the vehicle out from its parking space.
(4)
Driver alert system
Monitoring the driver's behavior such as steering operations and angles, the system detects erratic steering movements due to tiredness or drowsiness and recommends with a visual display and a warning sound that the driver take a break.
(5)
Lane Assist
Active at speeds more than 65 km/h, the system uses the camera located in the rear-view mirror unit to monitor the driving lane markings. If the vehicle starts to drift off lane unintentionally, the system alerts the driver with a vibration of the steering wheel and counter-steers the vehicle back on line.

Audi has adopted the innovative Matrix LED headlights on the A8 flagship model. In conjunction with the Night vision assistant, these headlights also play the role of the marker lights. If pedestrians in front of the vehicle are detected at night, individual LEDs flash at them to alert the driver and pedestrians. The A8 and the compact A3 Saloon feature the Audi Connect which allows the connection to the internet from the vehicle.

(Note) The facelifted Audi A8 was included in this report since it has employed numerous new features. The table above represents availability of the features on the model for the German market according to Audi's press release dated on August 21, 2013.

Audi: major advanced features
(1)
Matrix LED headlights
Headlamps: Each headlamp comprises 25 high-beam LEDs, arranged in groups of five. Each group of LEDs can be switched on and off or dimmed depending on the situation. When the onboard camera detects other vehicles ahead, the system masks the relevant sections of the high-beam by dimming or shutting off individual LEDs. Bright illumination is preserved in the remaining zones without dazzling the drivers in the other vehicles.
Navigation-based cornering lights: This lighting system uses route data from the navigation system to adjust the distribution of light toward traveling direction before the driver turns a steering wheel on the corners.
Dynamic turn signals: Each turn signal on the headlamps contains 18 LEDs arranged in a strip that is subdivided into seven blocks while one on the tail lamps contains 24 LEDs in eight segments. During flashing, the blocks are sequentially activated at 20 millisecond intervals, from the inside outwards. After 150 milliseconds, all segments are bright; for another 250 milliseconds, they illuminate with full intensity. Afterwards, the turn signals repeat the lighting sequence.
Marker lights: In conjunction with the Night vision assistant, these lights mark detected pedestrians. When the system detects pedestrians in front of the vehicle at night, individual LEDs flash at them rapidly three times in succession, alerting both the driver and pedestrians to the risks.
(2)
Secondary collision brake assist
When the airbag is deployed in response to a collision, the system automatically applies the brakes so that the vehicle does not travel further in an uncontrolled manner, thereby preventing secondary collisions.
(3)
Adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go function
The system monitors a preceding vehicle with the aid of the radar sensors and maintains a safe distance by automatically applying the brakes and accelerating. It is able to follow the vehicle ahead at speeds up to 150 km/h, and with the optional assistance package, up to 200 km/h. In slow-moving traffic and congestion, the Stop & Go function is active for the vehicle equipped with the S tronic dual clutch transmission.
(4)
Night vision assistant
The Night vision assistant detects pedestrians with the thermal imaging camera and shows them on the display. When the pedestrians are on the sides of the road, and not in the travelling route of the vehicle, yellow markings are superimposed in the display. If the unit identifies a hazard, e.g. if a pedestrian enters the driving course, the person is superimposed in red on the display. The upgraded system installed on the facelifted A8 can recognize larger animals in addition to pedestrians.
(5)
Audi connect
This is an extended function of the MMI navigation plus. It allows the connection to the internet from the vehicle via UMTS module (3G) or LTE. In the vehicle, online traffic information, Google Earth, Google Street View, and online news service are available. The Audi connect on the A3 Saloon offers a new parking space information service which shows locations, fees and the number of available spaces of the parking garages.
