I. Introduction

The need for clean and eco-friendly engines is naturally increasing. To meet this need, automakers and their suppliers are actively engaged in activities to reduce the weight of components, improve fuel efficiency and improve exhaust gas cleansing performance. Engine performance is directly connected to fuel economy and exhaust emissions, so it is essential to improve the performance of exhaust system components as well as to achieve improvements in the lubrication system and drivetrain, and to optimize combustion control.

For exhaust gas purification, it is necessary to improve the performance of the catalytic converter, as well as to design the optimum catalyst effect and back pressure (exhaust side pressure) for each engine. The exhaust pipes and tubes including the muffler and silencer, the shell shape of the catalytic converter, the pipe length, branching shape, inner wall condition of the exhaust manifold, and the heat capacity of the exhaust path are also important design items to be tuned in the restricted layout under the vehicle floor.

In addition, stricter regulations are expanding business in the short term for Japanese, European and U.S. catalyst manufacturers, who are leading the way in emissions control measures ahead of Chinese parts manufacturers. In 2020, electrically-heated catalytic converters were released by component manufacturers as equipment to comply with stricter Euro-7 regulations. Companies remain under pressure to develop exhaust systems.

On the other hand, the development of eco-friendly vehicles such as EVs (electric vehicles) is progressing at a rapid pace due to tightening regulations worldwide. Suppliers are also seeking opportunities to diversify into body parts, chassis parts and electrification parts for these eco-friendly vehicles.
