South Africa auto sales down 3.3% in December, the full year 2023 up 0.5%
On January 9, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) announced that sales of new passenger and commercial vehicles in South Africa decreased 3.3% year-on-year to 40,329 units in December 2023. In 2023, the full year sales volume increased 0.5% year-over-year to 532,098 units.
Passenger vehicles sales in 2023 represented a 4.4% decrease from 2022, LCV sales represented a 11.6% increase, MHCV represented a 0.6% decrease, HCV sales represented a 8.0% decrease, Extra HCV sales represented a 21.3% increase and bus sales represented increased 6.3%.
Among passenger vehicle and LCV sales manufacturers in December, Toyota sold 10,939 units (28.9% share), VW sold 5,229 units (13.8% share) and Suzuki sold 3,355 units (8.9% share). Among commercial vehicle sales in December, Daimler Trucks and Buses sold 563 units (22.1% share), Isuzu sold 316 units (12.4% share), and Toyota sold 261 units (10.3% share).
Sales to dealers accounted for 88.0%, to car rental agencies 8.7%, to governments 2.2%, and to corporate fleets 1.1% in December.
Exports in December increased by 1.2% y/y to 26,612 units.
According to NAAMSA, the new vehicle market’s prolonged recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic stuttered towards the second half of 2023, following two previous years of sound rebound. The market was still 1.3% below the pre-pandemic level in 2022 and for most of 2023 was well on track to recover to the pre-pandemic level of 2019. However, amidst a depressed economy, elevated cost of living increases and power outages, new vehicle sales finally yielded to the pressure with major logistical challenges at the country’s ports towards year-end further undermining the new vehicle market’s ability to full recovery. New vehicle sales increased by only 0.5% year-on-year in 2023 to 532,098 units compared to the 529,556 units in 2022 and will likely now take four years to recover to the pre-pandemic level of 536,612 units in 2019. On a positive note, heavy commercial vehicle sales already exceeded the pre-pandemic level in 2022, supported by the transport of goods forced onto roads due to the rail inefficiencies. The country’s weak economic growth rate, although still marginally positive, remains a key challenge for the new vehicle market going forward in view of the close correlation between new vehicle sales and the GDP growth rate. With a modest GDP growth rate of 1% projected for 2024, the new vehicle market would likely only improve by single digits of around 5% compared to the level of 2023.

On July 3, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) announced that sales of new passenger and commercial vehicles in South Africa increased 14.0% year-on-year to 46,810 units in June 2023. In the first half of 2023 sales volume increased 4.8% year-over-year to 265,824 units.
Passenger vehicles sales in June 2023 represented a 0.8% increase from the same month in 2022, LCV sales represented a 57.1% increase, MCV represented a 8.2% increase, HCV sales represented a 5.9% decrease, Extra Heavy CV sales were up 32.3%, and bus sales were down 14.5%.
Among passenger vehicle sales by manufacturers in June, Toyota sold 12,731 units (29.1% share), VW sold 5,531 units (12.6% share) and Suzuki sold 4,335 units (9.9% share). Among commercial vehicle sales in June, Daimler Trucks and Buses sold 560 units (18.2% share), FAW sold 350 units (11.4% share), and Isuzu sold 295 units (9.6% share).
Sales to dealers accounted for 83.5%, sales to vehicle rental industry 10.0%, sales to government 3.5%, and sales to corporate fleets 3.0%.
Exports in June decreased by 12.6% y/y to 27,296 units.
According to NAAMSA, the unexpected extent of the upswing in the new vehicle market during June 2023, for the second month in a row, exceeded expectations, despite ongoing increases in the total cost of ownership. Challenges confronting the economy and the automotive industry such as high interest rates, high inflation, and currency depreciation continue to strain consumers’ budgets and affordability appears to be driving new vehicle sales, underlined by the top selling models in the market. In addition to an easing in inflation by more than expected as well as an improvement in significantly less daytime loadshedding during the month, another welcome development was the renewed collaboration between business and government to urgently tackle key current challenges relating to energy, infrastructure and transport logistics, as well as combating crime. If successful, the collaboration efforts could assist to reduce policy uncertainty and promote a more predictable economic environment which would enable much higher levels of investment, growth and job creation and to break out of the current low economic growth trap.
