South Africa auto sales down 3.5%, the full year 2021 up 22.1% to 464,000 units
The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) announced that sales of new passenger and commercial vehicles in South Africa declined 3.5% year-on-year to 35,948 units in December 2021. In 2021 the full year sales volume increased 22.1% year-over-year to 464,122 units.
Passenger vehicles sales in December 2021 represented a 1.7% increase from the same month in 2020, LCV sales represented a 16.6% decrease, MHCV represented a 17.5% increase, HCV sales represented a 2.0% increase, and bus sales represented decreased 39.5%. Sales to dealers accounted for 92.2%, to car rental agencies 4.9%, to governments 1.9%, and to corporate fleets 1.0%.
Among passenger vehicle sales manufacturers in December, Toyota sold 9,302 units (27.4% share), VW sold 5,048 units (14.9% share) and Hyundai sold 2,872 units (8.5% share). Among light commercial vehicle sales in December, Daimler Trucks sold 350 units (17.4%), Toyota sold 278 units (13.8%), and Isuzu sold 226 units (11.2%).
Exports in December increased by 19.4% y/y to 21,430 units.
According to NAAMSA, while the new vehicle market has seen substantial growth since the initial shock, it has not been sufficient to return to pre-pandemic levels in 2021.
A sustained higher domestic economic growth rate is essential to support higher domestic new vehicle sales volumes. However, with a GDP growth rate forecast of a moderate 1.8% in 2022, the new vehicle market is expected to continue its gradual recovery during the year, but at a slower pace and at this stage a year-on-year improvement of around 8% in aggregate new vehicle sales volumes is projected for 2022. Factoring in the expected year-on-year improvement in vehicle exports of around 15%, an improvement in industry vehicle production of about 17% is projected for 2022.
