South Africa auto sales up 2.5% in December, the full year 2024 down 3.0%
On January 8, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) announced that sales of new passenger and commercial vehicles in South Africa increased 2.5% year-on-year to 41,273 units in December 2024. In 2024, the full year sales volume decreased 3.0% year-over-year to 515,712 units.
Passenger vehicles sales in 2024 represented a 1.1% increase from 2023, LCV sales represented a 12.0% decrease, MHCV represented a 6.5% decrease, HCV sales represented a 0.5% increase, Extra HCV sales represented a 7.9% decrease and bus sales represented increased 28.2%.
Among passenger vehicle and LCV sales manufacturers in December, Toyota sold 11,004 units (28.3% share), VW sold 4,785 units (12.3% share) and Suzuki sold 4,514 units (11.6% share).
Among commercial vehicle sales in December, Toyota sold 418 units (17.7% share), Daimler Trucks and Buses sold 382 units (16.2% share), and FAW sold 274 units (11.6% share).
Sales to dealers accounted for 88.4%, to car rental agencies 8.1%, to governments 2.1%, and to corporate fleets 1.4% in December.
Exports in December decreased by 4.3% y/y to 25,931 units.
According to NAAMSA, at the onset of 2024, the new vehicle market was still only 0.9% below the pre-pandemic level of 536,612 units in 2019. The industry anticipated a year of two halves with a taxing first half of the year and with brighter economic prospects and an upswing in new vehicle sales during the second half of the year, which unfortunately did not materialise. New vehicle sales remained under pressure in 2024, continuing to reflect a shift in the matrix with various new entrants in the domestic market, in particular Chinese brands, offering options at the more affordable end of the pricing spectrum as consumers battled a tough economic climate.

South Africa auto sales down 14.0% in June, down 7.4% in H1 2024
On July 1, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) announced that sales of new passenger and commercial vehicles in South Africa decreased 14.0% year-on-year to 40,072 units in June 2024. In the first half of 2024 sales volume decreased 7.4% year-over-year to 246,062 units.
Passenger vehicles sales in June 2024 represented a 9.0% decrease from the same month in 2023, LCV sales represented a 24.3% decrease, MCV represented a 27.7% decrease, HCV sales represented a 20.5% decrease, Extra Heavy CV sales were down 12.3%, and bus sales were up 89.5%.
Among passenger vehicle sales by manufacturers in June, Toyota sold 9,490 units (25.3% share), VW sold 5,454 units (14.6% share) and Suzuki sold 4,297 units (11.5% share). Among commercial vehicle sales in June, Daimler Trucks and Buses sold 424 units (16.4% share), FAW sold 401 units (15.5% share), and Isuzu sold 291 units (11.2% share).
Sales to dealers accounted for 82.5%, sales to vehicle rental industry 11.0%, sales to government 3.6%, and sales to corporate fleets 2.9%.
Exports in June increased by 3.6% y/y to 28,306 units.
According to NAAMSA, "New vehicle sales further declined in June 2024 as South African households continued to grapple with consistent cost pressures in a weak economic environment with affordability remaining a decisive factor in new vehicle purchasing decisions. Cumulative new vehicle sales for the first six months of the year were now tracking 7,6% below the corresponding period 2023, in line with industry expectations of a taxing first half of the year. However, the markets seem to have responded positively to the announcement of the new Cabinet and along with a third month of no load-shedding, a further welcomed relief at the fuel pumps in July 2024 reducing inflationary pressure, and likely lower interest rates to commence before year-end, brighter economic prospects for the second half of the year are steadily improving. South Africa’s seventh administration now has a unique opportunity to accelerate implementing structural reforms and turning the economy around. A keystone of this is Operation Vulindlela that has already resulted in many gains for the country, including the opening up of the electricity market and building better relations between businesses and government to resolve other crises areas."
