South Africa auto sales up 16.2% in December, the full year 2022 up 13.9%
On January 9, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) announced that sales of new passenger and commercial vehicles in South Africa increased 16.2% year-on-year to 41,783 units in December 2022. In 2022, the full year sales volume increased 13.9% year-over-year to 528,963 units.
Passenger vehicles sales in 2022 represented a 19.3% increase from 2021, LCV sales represented a 1.9% increase, Medium CV represented a 11.3% increase, HCV sales represented a 19.4% increase, Extra HCV sales represented a 9.2% increase and bus sales represented increased 4.4%.
Among passenger vehicle and LCV sales manufacturers in December, Toyota sold 10,965 units (27.9% share), VW sold 5,290 units (13.5% share) and Suzuki sold 3,058 units (7.8% share). Among commercial vehicle sales in December, Daimler Trucks and Buses sold 518 units (20.3% share), Isuzu sold 343 units (13.4% share), and Mercedes-Benz sold 314 units (12.3% share).
Sales to dealers accounted for 89.7%, to car rental agencies 7.3%, to governments 1.5%, and to corporate fleets 1.5% in December.
Exports in December increased by 24.2% y/y to 26,302 units.
According to NAAMSA, following a fairly upbeat first quarter 2022 industry performance, global supply chain disruptions along with the impact of the devastating floods in KwaZulu-Natal, elevated inflation, an upward trend in interest rates, record fuel prices, as well as record highs in the frequency and intensity of load shedding weighed heavily on both business and consumer confidence. However, the new vehicle market’s performance in 2022 remained resilient despite the the multiple national and international headwinds. On a positive note, the lifting of all COVID-19 lockdown restrictions in the country in 2022 along with the recovery in business and leisure travel provided some support to the new vehicle market to counter the growing pressures on household incomes. However, the consumer trend of buying less expensive and smaller cars, usually SUVs or crossovers, continued in 2022. Stronger sales in the various commercial vehicle segments indicated improved business confidence, even in the tough economic times.

South Africa auto sales up 7.6% in June, up 11.4% in H1 2022
On July 1, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) announced that sales of new passenger and commercial vehicles in South Africa increased 7.6% year-on-year to 41,019 units in June 2022. In the first half of 2022 sales volume increased 11.4% year-over-year to 253,442 units.
Passenger vehicles sales in June 2022 represented a 20.6% increase from the same month in 2021, LCV sales represented a 20.8% decrease, MCV represented a 1.3% increase, HCV sales represented a 19.4% increase, Extra Heavy CV sales were up 5.8%, and bus sales were totally flat.
Sales to dealers accounted for 85.2%, car rental agencies 8.6%, corporate fleets 5.0%, and governments 1.2%.
Among passenger vehicle sales by manufacturers in June, Toyota sold 7,086 units (18.4% share), VW sold 5,652 units (14.7% share) and Suzuki sold 4,622 units (12.0% share). Among commercial vehicle sales in June, Daimler Trucks and Buses sold 387 units (14.9%), Toyota sold 353 units (13.6%), and Isuzu sold 322 units (12.4%).
Exports in June increased by 18.0% y/y to 33,054 units.
According to NAAMSA, considering several upside risks to the economy and the inflation outlook, the new vehicle market delivered an upbeat performance during the month of June 2022. However, as consumers start to feel the pinch of rising food and fuel prices along with higher interest rates on their cost of living, the spill-over effect of reduced disposable income will increasingly result in lower demand for non-essentials. In a further blow to the economy resulting in escalating business and consumer anxiety, stage 6 load shedding was implemented during the month, only the second time since 2019. Just emerging from COVID-19 and the impact of the devastating floods in KZN, stage 6 load shedding will cost the South African economy dearly at a time when it is already facing a myriad of headwinds battling to recover.
Passenger car exports performed well during the month, but LCV exports lagged due to the knock-on effects of the KZN floods as well as the ongoing shortage of semi-conductors impacting on vehicle production. Although the ongoing war in Ukraine, supply chain disruptions and the risk of stagflation are hampering global growth and will weigh in on the domestic industry’s export potential, prospects for 2022 remain optimistic on the back of further new locally manufactured model introductions during the year.
