Hyundai Group's passenger car sales in China In these years, Korean Hyundai Motor Group (including Kia Motors) has expanded its sales significantly in the Chinese market. During the January to October 2013 period, its combined sales of locally produced passenger and commercial vehicles increased by 20% year-over-year (y/y). Hyundai Motor Group has revealed its aims to become the second largest foreign capital group in China in the near future. Hyundai Motor Group has set its sales target at the 2.4 million-unit level for locally-produced passenger cars by 2016 (including exports but excluding imports). In line with this, the group plans to increase its annual passenger car production to more than 2.4 million units around 2015. Regarding commercial vehicles, Hyundai Motor aims at production and sales of 170,000 units in 2017.
 In parallel with the expansion of vehicle production, Hyundai Motor Group has been expanding its engine production. It is now promoting a plan to enhance its annual passenger car engine production capacity to more than 3 million units by 2015.

 Hyundai Motor Group is expected to attain its initial sales goal of 1.55 million units in 2013 for passenger cars which are built locally in China. As mid-term sales targets for passenger cars in China, Beijing Hyundai Motor Company Corporation and Dongfeng-Yueda-Kia Motor Co.  In its plan to increase annual production in China, Hyundai Motor Group has revealed its ambition to expand the annual production capacity of passenger cars from 1.43 million units as of November 2013 to more than 2.4 million units around 2015. Regarding commercial vehicles, the group also has an ambitious plan to increase the capacity from 100,000 units to more than 700,000 units in 2020 or later.

Beijing Hyundai Motor to expand annual production capacity to 1.4 million units by 2015

▽Third Beijing passenger car plant (operations started in 2012) to expand annual production capacity to 400,000 units
 In June 2012, Beijing Hyundai Motor formally started operations at the third Beijing (new) passenger car plant. The plant also started production of its first model, "Elantra" (known as the Avante in South Korea). As of November 2013, the plant's annual capacity is 400,000 units (achieved by the second phase construction; increased from 300,000 attained at the first phase). In the future, this plant is expected to introduce new models, mainly SUVs.
 In this third plant, CNY 6.5 billion was invested in total. The site area is 1.46 million square meters. The plant has already been equipped with a 5,400-ton class, full-automatic, combination-type press machine, a painting line using water-based paint, and a flexible assembly line. An engine plant is also located within the same premises.
▽Plan to construct fourth passenger car plant construction in mid-west area
 In May 2013, Beijing Hyundai Motor revealed that it is considering construction of its fourth passenger car plant in the mid-west area (Source: A press release on an interview with a Hyundai Motor's executive). The company's current annual capacity is 1 million units. This new plant will have an annual production capacity of 300,000 to 400,000 units and start operations by 2015 (or as early as in 2014).
 As of November 2013, it is reported that Chungking is the most likely candidate and that the company has already started talks with the local government.

Dongfeng-Yueda-Kia Motors to expand annual capacity to more than 1 million units

▽To start operations at third Yancheng plant from early 2014
 In June 2012, Kia Motor's passenger car JV, "Dongfeng-Yueda-Kia Motors", started construction of its third passenger car plant in Yancheng, Jiangsu province. By the end of 2013, the company plans to complete the first phase construction and start trial production. The plant's formal operations are expected to start in the first half of 2014 (as early as in February). Its initial annual production capacity will be 200,000 units. Kia plans to gradually expand the capacity to more than 300,000 units, and then to more than 400,000 units. (The number of employees at this plant will be increased to 2,300 eventually.)
 After this plant starts operations, Dongfeng-Yueda-Kia Motors' annual capacity will increase significantly. Combining the capacities of the first plant (130,000 units) and the second plant (300,000 units), the total capacity will be enhanced to more than 630,000 units (with normal shift) in the first half of 2014, and to more than 730,000 units by the end of 2014. Furthermore, the annual production capacities at the existing first and second plants will be enhanced up to 520,000 units.
The total of USD 814 million will be invested in the construction of this third plant. In addition to pressing/welding/painting/assembly facilities, there will also be a Research & Development (R&D) center including a high-speed test course, and an engine plant within the same premises. 410 production robots in total will be introduced at the new plant. This third plant is reported to build the new K3 (using the same platform as Beijing Hyundai's Elantra), new energy vehicles, and JV's original brand vehicles. It will also produce mid-size passenger vehicles and small/midsize SUVs.

Sichuan Hyundai Motor builds up production capability for Hyundai-brand commercial vehicles and large engines

 On January 1, 2013, Hyundai Motor started operations of Sichuan Hyundai Motor Co., Ltd. This JV was established jointly with Sichuan Nanjun Automobile on a fifty-fifty-basis in August 2012. The JV was capitalized at CNY 1.8 billion and inherited all commercial vehicle businesses except agricultural vehicles from Sichuan Nanjun Automobile. Production is continued at the JV's bus branch plant in Wenjiang, Chengdu, Sichuan province and at the existing truck plant in Ziyang. The JV's main plant is also under construction in Ziyang.
▽Starts production of the County under Hyundai brand, and high-end mid-size bus at Chengdu branch plant
 As of November 2013, Sichuan Hyundai Motor's Chengdu branch plant has an annual production capacity of 3,000 buses. The company plans to expand this capacity to 10,000 units by June 2014. In August 2013, production of the JV's first bus under Hyundai brand started at the Chengdu branch plant. This is a high-end mid-size bus, named the County.
 The existing truck plant in Ziyang has an annual capacity of more than 100,000 units. This existing plant produces refreshed models of various commercial vehicles (mini- to medium-duty trucks and light to large buses), which were inherited from Sichuan Nanjun Automobile.
▽To construct new commercial vehicle JV plant in Ziyang
 In August 2012, Sichuan Hyundai Motor started construction of its JV's main plant in Ziyang, Sichuan province. The company will complete the construction in three phases by 2020. It has an ambitious plan to increase employees to 50,000 and attain an annual commercial vehicle production capacity of 700,000 units through this construction. The main plant will have an engine plant, an R & D center, and a test course as well as pressing/welding/painting/assembly facilities. The plant is expected to start production in June 2014.
 The construction of this plant will be completed by 2020 with an investment of CNY 20 billion in total. 63% of this investment, CNY 12.6 billion, will be spent on the construction of facilities. On a phase basis, CNY 3.6 billion will be invested for the first phase (CNY 500 million for the R & D center construction, CNY 3.1 billion for the plant construction, resulting in a total of CNY 5.6 billion including capital investment), CNY 4 billion for the second, and CNY 5 billion for the third.
 This main plant will have an annual capacity to produce 170,000 commercial vehicles (breakdown: 160,000 trucks and 10,000 buses) after the first phase construction is completed in 2014. The company plans to increase this capacity gradually to 400,000 units through the second phase construction (site area will be expanded to 1.19 million square meters), and to 700,000 units through the third. The second phase construction will be completed in 2017 and the third in 2020.



Engine production enhancement in China

 Hyundai Motor Group has been expanding its annual production capacity for passenger car engines in China. More specifically, the capacity will be increased from 1.9 million units as of November 2013, including those to be exported, to more than 3 million units by 2015. Among them, the capacities of the engine plants of its passenger car JVs will be expanded from 1.15 million units as of November 2013 to 1.65 million units by 2015.

Beijing Hyundai Motor to build up new engine production capacity by 2015

▽Third Beijing engine plant already has annual production capacity of 400,000 units
 Around June 2012, Beijing Hyundai Motor started operations at the third passenger car plant in Shunyi District, Beijing. Operations also began simultaneously at the third engine plant located within the same premises. As of November 2013, the second phase construction has been completed and the annual production capacity at the third engine plant has already been expanded from 200,000 units to 400,000 units. The plant's main products are 1.4/1.6-liter engines, but it also produces engines for mid-size and large passenger cars.
▽Beijing Hyundai Motor to renovate existing first and second engine plants to produce new engines by January 2015
 Beijing Hyundai Motor will renovate its existing first and second engine plants attached to the first and second passenger car plants in Shunyi. The renovation already started in June 2013. The company will discontinue production of old type of engines and build up production capability for new engines. CNY 1.07 billion will be invested in this project. This renovation includes the construction of a new building covering 11,000 square meters.
 Although the combined annual production capacities will not change from 500,000 units (250,000 units each), the first plant's entire production capacity of 250,000 units will be shifted from conventional engines to the new γ (MPI) series of engines. The second plant had previously produced the γ (MPI) series of engines only, but will newly be assigned to annually produce 50,000 units of new γ (T-GDI) turbo engines through flexible production method.

Dongfeng-Yueda-Kia Motors to start operations at new engine plant attached to third passenger car plant

 Dongfeng-Yueda-Kia Motors' third passenger car plant in Yancheng is expected to start operations between February and June 2014. Within the same premises, a new engine plant will start operations as early as the end of 2013. This engine plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of more than 200,000 units. After the construction is completed, Dongfeng-Yueda-Kia's annual engine production capacity will be expanded to more than 450,000 units, including that of the engine plant (250,000 units) attached to the existing second passenger car plant.
 Currently, Dongfeng-Yueda-Kia procures 1.4/1.6-liter α and γ, and 1.8/2.0-liter Nu gasoline engines also from Hyundai WIA Automotive Engine (Shandong) Co., Ltd. The Hyundai Motor's engine JV is located in Rizhao, Shandong province, mainly to supply products for Hyundai-Kia Group's global plants.

Hyundai WIA Automotive Engine (Shandong) to build up engine production capacity of 1.35 million units, primarily for export

 Hyundai WIA Automotive Engine (Shandong) Co., Ltd. is an engine JV established by Hyundai-Kia Group and a local company in Shandong province. As of April 2013, the JV's three Rizhao plants had annual engine production capacities of 780,000 units in total. The JV's three casting plants in Rizhao produce a total of 1.6 million units of unfinished engine parts. On a plant basis, the first plant produces 700,000 units, the second 400,000, and the third 500,000. Its cylinder block and crank shaft plant produces 1.2 million units, including 400,000 transmission cases.
 In its sales targets released in May 2012, Hyundai WIA Automotive Engine (Shandong) aimed to sell 550,000 engines in 2012 (sales of CNY 5.8 billion), 610,000 in 2013 (Sales: CNY 7.5 billion), 670,000 in 2014 (Sales: CNY 8.4 billion), and 680,000 in 2015 (Sales: CNY 8.6 billion). In response to its recent strong performance, however, the company brought out a revised plan, as of November 2013, to expand the annual production capacity further to 1 million units around 2014 and to 1.35 million units by 2015.
▽Existing Rizhao plants to expand annual engine production capacity by 100,000 units
 Hyundai WIA Automotive Engine (Shandong) plans to expand its three existing engine plants in Rizhao. This plan was disclosed in March 2013 by the government's announcement of eco-assessment on the expansion of these plants.
 In this plan, the company intends to increase the annual production capacity at these engine plants by 100,000 units from the current 780,000 to more than 880,000. It aims for this expansion without constructing a new building, but through introduction of new facilities (129 units) and renovation of old ones (68 units/sets in total).In addition, the company will enhance the annual machining capacity for cylinder blocks and blanks used on Hyundai αIII/β/γ/Nu engines at the existing three casting plants. The enhanced annual capacity will be equivalent to 200,000 engines.
 So far, USD 817 million has been invested in this JV in total (USD 490 million for the first phase). The JV also produces dies and had more than 1,600 employees as of February 2013.
▽Our original survey finds plan to construct Rizhao fourth engine plant
 MarkLines' original survey conducted in November 2013 has found that Hyundai WIA Automotive Engine (Shandong) plans to construct its fourth new engine plant, again in Rizhao. Details including the annual production volume are yet to be disclosed.
 Most of this JV's products are exported to Hyundai Motor Group's plants in Russia, Slovakia, and India, but are also supplied to Beijing Hyundai Motor and Dongfeng-Yueda-Kia, the group's passenger car plants in China.

Sichuan Hyundai Motor to start operations at commercial vehicle engine plant in Ziyang in 2014

 Hyundai Motor's commercial vehicle JV in Sichuan, Sichuan Hyundai Motor Co., Ltd., will construct an engine plant within the premises of its main commercial vehicle plant in Ziyang. Construction of the main plant started in August 2012. Regarding the engine plant, details including annual production volume and when the construction will begin are yet to be revealed. The company will complete the first phase construction of the engine plant in 2014 and establish an annual capacity to produce 20,000 large engines which is compliant with Euro 4 (China IV) exhaust gas emission standards for Hyundai Motor's commercial vehicles.
 In the future, this engine plant is expected to gradually start production of Hyundai Motor's 3.9-liter, 5-liter, 10-liter, and 12.3-liter engines, including common rail diesel engines.



Model plans to improve Hyundai brand image and launch Kia's latest model in China

 As its new Chinese model strategy, Hyundai Motor revealed its emphasis on improving the company image from low/medium-end to high-end-oriented.

 In the next 10 years from 2013, it will expand the high-end lineup for the Chinese market, mainly through Beijing Hyundai Motor. This is their so-called "D + S" strategy, centered on D segment and SUVs. The company plans to increase the ratio of midsize models from 26% in 2010 to more than 50% in 2017.

 Regarding commercial vehicles, Sichuan Hyundai Motor's new Ziyang main plant will start operations in Sichuan province in 2014. Starting that year, Hyundai Motor will produce additional Hyundai brand new commercial vehicles every year, including mini- to heavy-duty trucks and new buses (Universe/Global 900-type).

 On the other hand, Kia will introduce production models released in the U.S. and Europe under its brand into the Chinese market, as previously planned. In addition, the company intends to shift its strategy to premiere Kia brand new models in China. In the future, it plans to launch one or two new models every year. For the time being, Kia will focus on the expansion of sales of the K series models (fashionable, high-quality cars) and Forte (low-end, practical cars), through Dongfeng-Yueda-Kia Motors. The company will also expand its SUV lineup further.

 Concerning energy-saving and new energy vehicles, Hyundai Motor Group will boost sales of vehicles equipped with "T-GDI" turbo engines. It will also start low-volume production of electric vehicles (EVs) by 2015, and launch hybrid vehicles (HVs) as well via Beijing Hyundai Motor. Through Dongfeng-Yueda-Kia, on the other hand, the group plans to launch JV's Horki brand model in 2015 (likely to be an EV) and HVs in 2016 (probably K5 Hybrid) into the Chinese market (Source: Press release in April 2013 on an interview with General Manager So Nam-young of Dongfeng-Yueda-Kia Motors).
