Flash report, March 2024
Apr 2, 2024
*There are cases where recently released data and detailed information in the database do not match up for reasons including different information sources, and discrepancies between preliminary reports and confirmed data.
On April 1, the automobile manufacturers association of Spain (ANFAC) announced that passenger car registrations of 94,840 units in March 2024 represented a decrease of 4.7% over March 2023.
Passenger car sales of 244,879 units in the first three months of the year represented a 3.1% increase from the same period in 2023.
Toyota sales increased 15.6% to 9,343 units, Kia sales increased 6.1% to 7,269 units, VW sales decreased 6.6% to 5,822 units, SEAT sales decreased 24.2% to 5,753 units and Peugeot sales decreased 28.5% to 5,729 units compared to March 2023.
The best-selling cars in March 2024, in order of popularity, were the Nissan Qashqai, Dacia Sandero, Toyota Yaris, Toyota Corolla and Hyndai Tucson.
Of all vehicles sold in March, gasoline vehicles had a 42.6% market share, diesel vehicles had a 9.1% share, and other vehicles had a 48.3% share.
Private car sales in March decreased 3.9% to 34,668 units, business sales decreased 27.3% to 28,272 units and rental car sales increased 29.7% to 31,900 units.
ANFAC explained that "This month of March, it recorded the first negative market since December 2022. While it is true that Easter this year falls in March, unlike last year, which was in April, and we have two less working days. We will have to wait until April to see whether we continue on the upward path or not; we are concerned about the decline of more than 27% of corporate purchases, given that these are an indicator of how the economy goes. But we are more concerned about sales of electrified vehicles. Adding power and plug-in hybrids in March, the quota was 10.3%. We are still far from achieving the targets for decarbonization in both sales of these vehicles and recharge facilities."

Spanish passenger car sales increase 9.9% in February
On March 1, the automobile manufacturers association of Spain (ANFAC) announced that passenger car registrations of 81,348 units in February 2024 represented an increase of 9.9% over February 2023.
Passenger car sales of 150,033 units in the first two months of the year represented a 8.7% increase from the same period in 2023.
Peugeot sales increased 7.1% to 6,151 units, Toyota sales increased 0.8% to 6,085 units, VW sales increased 8,7% to 5,279 units, Renault sales increased 17.0% to 5,201 units and SEAT sales decreased 13.8% to 5,196 units compared to February 2023.
The best-selling cars in February 2024, in order of popularity, were the Dacia Sandero, Nissan Qashqai, SEAT Arona, Peugeot 2008 and Toyota Corolla.
Of all vehicles sold in February, gasoline vehicles had a 40.1% market share, diesel vehicles had a 10.2% share, and other vehicles had a 49.7% share.
Private car sales in February increased 7.2% to 34,787 units, business sales decreased 10.9% to 28,546 units and rental car sales increased 89.7% to 18,015 units.
ANFAC explained that "February continues on the path we started in January, a fact that has been favoured by having one more market day per leap year. This February has also been a turn for rent companies to take over, as they have made purchases to meet the demand of tourists during Easter, which is celebrated later this month. Our goal remains to exceed one million cars sold this year, a figure that has not been achieved since 2019. This low sales volume has led to the average age of passenger cars in Spain in 2023, which continues to grow to reach 14.2 years. We need to recover vehicle sales volumes to lower that average age, while increasing the market share of low and zero-emission vehicles, which account for only 5.7% of the entire operating park."

Spanish passenger car sales increase 7.3% in January
On February 1, the automobile manufacturers association of Spain (ANFAC) announced that passenger car registrations of 68,685 units in January 2024 represented an increase of 7.3% over January 2023.
Toyota sales increased 14.8% to 7,615 units, SEAT sales increased 14.7% to 5,073 units, Kia sales decreased 2.2% to 4,594 units, Hyndai sales increased 19.0% to 4,121 units and Peugeot sales decreased 4.2% to 3,881 units compared to January 2023.
The best-selling cars in January 2024, in order of popularity, were the Dacia Sandero, Toyota Corolla, MG ZS, SEAT Leon and Toyota Yaris Cross.
Of all vehicles sold in January, gasoline vehicles had a 34.9% market share, diesel vehicles had a 11.0% share, and other vehicles had a 54.1% share.
Private car sales in January increased 6.3% to 34,037 units, business sales decreased 1.6% to 27,410 units and rental car sales increased 74.6% to 7,238 units.
ANFAC explained that "We started 2024 with a positive data. The market grows by 7.3 per cent, and it shakes by 69,000 units. Considering that in January 2023, much of the orders that were placed in November and December 2022 and delayed deliveries due to lack of vehicle trucks were registered, last January has yielded good data. Admittedly, we are still far from the 2020 figures, but starting the year up gives us optimism. We should realize how resilient the automobile sector is to adapt to all kinds of endogenous and exogenous shocks nonstop. We are now struck by the delays caused by terrorist attacks on the Red Sea that force cargo ships to surround Africa to reach Europe and by the severe drought that can affect not only people's routine but the production of all kinds of goods. We will see how February behaves, but with this figure and, with all the caution of being January, we could be close to one million new cars by 2024."
