November sales in China: Nissan, Toyota, Honda, and Mazda achieve y/y growth
In November 2016, four Japanese automakers, Nissan, Toyota, Honda, and Mazda, achieved a year-over-year increase in vehicle sales in China. Growth was driven by continued popularity of SUVs as well as strong sales of small vehicles (demand increased based on an assumption that small car tax break will end in 2016.) Toyota achieved a year-over-year rise for the first time in two months due to favorable small car sales.

On December 5, Nissan announced that its November sales in China reached 135,800 vehicles. This figure represented a 10.7% increase on a year-over-year (y/y) basis and record-high sales for the month of November. The y/y improvement rate was lower than that in October, but this is the ninth consecutive month that the company achieved a y/y rise. Nissan continued to see high demand for the Sylphy compact sedan that is eligible for the small car tax break, and achieved increased sales of the Qashqai SUV. The OEM’s year-to-date (YTD) sales in China from January through November totaled 1,192,100 units, which was 9.3% higher than those in the same period in 2015.

Toyota’s November sales in China reached approximately 111,100 vehicles for a 6.0% increase y/y. The automaker achieved a y/y rise after suffering a 4.1% decrease in October. Major models that boosted the OEM’s sales were smaller models like the Corolla and the Levin, which are eligible for the small car tax break. The automaker sold 1,100,300 vehicles in China from January through November 2016, up 10.0% y/y, and is aiming to achieve full-year sales of 1,150,000 units.

Honda sold 126,713 vehicles in China in November. This figure was 39.5% higher than that in November 2015, marking the ninth consecutive month of a double-digit improvement y/y on the back of the small car tax break and strong demand for SUVs. Sales of the Accord, Vezel, CR-V, Civic, and XR-V continued to exceed 10,000 units, respectively. Honda’s January-November sales in China totaled 1,114,822 units, up 28.3% y/y.

Mazda’s November sales in China reached 30,203 vehicles for a y/y increase of 36.7%. The automaker achieved a y/y rise for the sixth consecutive month. Its YTD sales totaled 250,060 units, 19% higher y/y. The company’s goal to sell 240,000 vehicles in 2016 was attained one month ahead of schedule due to strong sales of four models that are equipped with the Skyactiv technology.

According to the October sales results in China announced by Japanese automakers, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., Honda Motor Co., Ltd., and Mazda Motor Corporation achieved a double-digit growth rate on a year-over-year (y/y) basis. Sales were driven by the small car tax break and strong demand for SUVs. Meanwhile, Toyota Motor Corporation saw its sales decrease 4.1% y/y due to slowdown in demand before its new model releases.
On November 4, Nissan announced that its October sales in China reached 127,200 units, which was a 16.1% y/y and a record-high for the month of October. Sales continued to grow y/y for the eighth consecutive month. Sales increased due to continued strong demand for vehicles including the Sylphy small sedan, X-Trail SUV, and Qashqai SUV. Year-to-date (YTD) sales totaled 1,056,300 units, up 9.1% y/y.
Toyota’s October sales were 99,200 units, a 4.1% decrease y/y. This is the first time in four months that Toyota failed to achieve y/y growth. Sales declined due to slowdown in demand before the planned releases of redesigned models including the new Vios. The decrease is reportedly attributable to high production volume in the same month last year, when the company had to recover production after the Tianjin port explosions. YTD sales reached 989,300 units, up 10.5% y/y.
Honda’s October sales reached 116,005 units, which was a 39.6% increase y/y. The OEM achieved a double-digit y/y growth rate for the eighth consecutive month. The gain was led by strong sales of five popular models which sold over 10,000 units respeceively: the Accord, Vezel, CR-V, Civic, and XR-V. Honda’s YTD sales totaled 988,109 units, up 27.0% y/y.
Mazda’s October sales were 28,147 units, a 40.1% increase y/y. The company achieved record-high sales for each month for the fifth consecutive month. Demand for vehicles equipped with the automaker’s Skyactiv systems is high, and Mazda has already sold over 500,000 vehicles equipped with the technology in China. Mazda’s YTD sales were 219,858 units, up 16.9% y/y. The company says it will continue its efforts to achieve its full year sales target of 240,000 units.
