Flash report, November 2021
Dec 10, 2021
*There are cases where recently released data and detailed information in the database do not match up for reasons including different information sources, and discrepancies between preliminary reports and confirmed data.China vehicle production and sales decline 9.3% and 9.1%, respectively, in November
On December 10, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for the month of November, 2021.
In November 2021, China’s macro-economy was in a stable state. The lack of power supply had been slightly mitigated, along with the fall in price of raw materials. The automotive industry was struggling to overcome the impact exerted by numerous factors such as chip supply shortage, outbreak of scattered COVID-19 cases, and adjustments to policies and regulations. The overall situation of vehicle production and sales was better than what was expected at the beginning of the month.
In November 2021, production and sales both kept declining year-over-year (y/y). Passenger vehicle production and sales achieved month-over-month (m/m) growth. Owing to factors such as the implementation of China VI emissions standard and the policy adjustments for “light trucks with a blue plate” (for example, the total weight standard of “a light truck with a blue plate” has been increased, which means more freight can be transported), consumers were sitting on the fence, which resulted in a sharp y/y decline in production and sales. However, NEV (New Energy Vehicle) production and sales hit a record high again. From January to November, cumulative NEV production exceeded 3 million units, while its sales volume were approximately 3 million units. Vehicle exports in November have maintained a rapid growth y/y. Chinese-branded passenger vehicles continued to increase their share for eight consecutive months.
Looking ahead to December, regardless of the stable automotive consumption needs, there are still uncertainties about the supply. Factors such as the chip supply shortage, power cuts in various regions at the end of the year, and scattered COVID-19 cases in local areas have increased the potential supply chain risk of the automotive industry. In conclusion, vehicle production and sales in 2021 is expected to be slightly higher compared with 2020.
Overall vehicle production in November totaled 2.585 million units, reflecting a 9.3% y/y decrease, while sales totaled 2.522 million units, reflecting a 9.1% y/y decrease. Cumulative production and sales volumes of the period from January through November were 23.172 million units and 23.489 million units, up by 3.5% and 4.5% y/y, respectively.
In November, passenger vehicle production and sales reached 2.231 million units and 2.192 million units, representing a 4.3% and 4.7% y/y decrease, respectively. Passenger vehicle production for the January to November period totaled 18.879 million units, up by 6.9% y/y, while sales were 19.060 million units, up by 7.1% y/y.
Among commercial vehicles, production in November totaled 353,000 units, reflecting a 31.9% y/y decrease. Commercial vehicle sales were 330,000 units, reflecting a 30.3% y/y decrease. The period from January through November has recorded a total of 4.293 million units and 4.429 million units for commercial vehicle production and sales volumes, respectively, reflecting a y/y decrease of 9.1% and 5.3%.
In November, NEV production reached 457,000 units, reflecting a 130% y/y increase, while sales reached 450,000 units, reflecting a 120% y/y increase. Among NEVs, BEV (battery electric vehicle) production was 372,000 units, reflecting a 120% y/y increase, while sales were 361,000 units, reflecting a 110% y/y increase. PHV (plug-in hybrid vehicle) production was 85,000 units, reflecting a 160% y/y increase, while sales were 89,000 units, reflecting a 170% y/y increase. FCV (fuel cell vehicle) production and sales were 212 units and 147 units respectively, down by 26.4% and 49.3% y/y respectively.
For the period from January to November, NEV production and sales volumes were 3.023 million units and 2.99 million units, both reflecting a 170% y/y increase. Among NEVs, BEV production and sales reached 2.504 million units and 2.466 million units, up by 180% and 170% y/y. PHV production and sales were 517,000 units and 522,000 units, up by 130% and 140% y/y. FCV production and sales both reached 1,000 units, up by 23.0% and 16.0% y/y, respectively.

China vehicle production and sales decline 17.9% and 19.6%, respectively, in September
On October 12, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for the month of September, 2021.
In September 2021, under the national policy of "dual control of energy consumption", owing to the shortage of coal supply and the fact that the purchase price of coal is higher than the sale price of electricity, China enforced power cuts in many regions across the country, which affected the production of enterprises. Moreover, crippled by factors such as high commodity prices and high international logistics costs, the supply and demand of the manufacturing industry slowed down. The automotive industry, in particular, continued to suffer from chip shortages, placing it under great pressure.
In September 2021, production and sales both continued to decline year-over-year (y/y). But NEV (New Energy Vehicles) production and sales hit a record high again, both exceeding 350,000 units. Additionally, vehicle exports continued to increase rapidly in September.
Overall vehicle production in September totaled 2.077 million units, reflecting an 17.9% y/y decrease, while sales totaled 2.067 million units, reflecting an 19.6% y/y decrease. Flash report, August 2021
Sep 10, 2021
*There are cases where recently released data and detailed information in the database do not match up for reasons including different information sources, and discrepancies between preliminary reports and confirmed data.China vehicle production and sales decline 18.7% and 17.8%, respectively, in August
On September 10, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for the month of August.
In August 2021, production and sales both kept declining year-over-year (y/y) on a large scale. Several factors account for this situation. For example, the pandemic in China and Malaysia led to higher risks in the supply chain, which may further increase the risk of reducing production. In addition, production and sales were high in August 2020.
Influenced by the implementation of China 6 emission standards for heavy-duty diesel vehicles from July 1, the production and sales of commercial vehicles fluctuated. However, thanks to the strong performance of the microbus market, buses maintained y/y increases in production and sales in August. In this month, NEVs (New Energy Vehicles) continued to be a bright spot, with production and sales both exceeding 300,000 units for the first time. Additionally, vehicle exports continued to increase rapidly in August.
Overall vehicle production in August totaled 1.725 million units, reflecting an 18.7% y/y decrease, while sales totaled 1.799 million units, reflecting an 17.8% y/y decrease. Cumulative production and sales volumes of the period from January through August were 16.166 million units and 16.556 million units, up by 11.9% and 13.7% y/y, respectively.
In August, passenger vehicle production and sales reached 1.497 million units and 1.552 million units, representing an 11.9% and 11.7% y/y decrease, respectively. Passenger vehicle production for the January to August period totaled 12.891 million units, up by 15.2% y/y, while sales were 13.112 million units, up by 16.0% y/y.
Among commercial vehicles, production in August totaled 229,000 units, reflecting a 46.2% y/y decrease. Commercial vehicle sales were 247,000 units, reflecting a 42.8% y/y decrease. The period from January through August has recorded a total of 3.275 million units and 3.444 million units for commercial vehicle production and sales volumes, respectively, reflecting a y/y increase of 0.6% and 5.5%.
In August, NEV production and sales reached 309,000 units and 321,000 units, both reflecting a 180% y/y increase. Among NEVs, BEV (battery electric vehicle) production and sales were 252,000 units and 265,000 units, both up by 190% y/y. PHV (plug-in hybrid vehicle) production and sales were both 56,000 units, reflecting a 140% and 170% y/y increase, respectively. FCV (fuel cell vehicle) production and sales were 40 units and 38 units, down by 58.8% and 68.6% y/y, respectively.
For the period from January to August, NEV production and sales volumes were 1.813 million units and 1.799 million units, both reflecting a 190% y/y increase. Among NEVs, BEV production and sales reached 1.512 million units and 1.492 million units, up by 220% and 210% y/y. *There are cases where recently released data and detailed information in the database do not match up for reasons including different information sources, and discrepancies between preliminary reports and confirmed data.China vehicle production and sales increase 6.3% and 8.6% respectively in April
On May 12, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for the month of April, 2021.
In April 2021, production and sales both reflected dramatically lower year-over-year (y/y) increate rates compared to the double-digit increase rates in March. The reason is that production and sales began to recover in April 2020, as a result of which high increase rates based on the low baselines in 2020 were no longer able to be achieved. Among passenger vehicles, SUVs surpassed sedans in terms of monthly production and sales. Chinese-branded passenger vehicles experienced a significant increase in market share in April. With regard to commercial vehicles, trucks reflected a near-zero growth in sales. Production and sales of new energy vehicles in April were still above 200,000 units, marking a record high in terms of April production and sales. Additionally, vehicle exports performed well and reached a record-breaking 150,000 units in April.
Overall vehicle production in April totaled 2.234 million units, reflecting a 6.3% y/y increase, while sales totaled 2.252 million units, reflecting an 8.6% y/y increase. Cumulative production and sales volumes of the period from January through April were 8.586 million units and 8.748 million units, up by 53.4% and 51.8% y/y respectively.
In April, passenger vehicle production and sales reached 1.714 million units and 1.704 million units, representing a 7.9% and 10.8% y/y increase respectively. The passenger vehicle production for the January to April period totaled 6.668 million units, up by 55.3% y/y, while sales were 6.791 million units, up by 53.1% y/y.
Among commercial vehicles, production in April totaled 521,000 units, reflecting a 1.2% y/y increase. Commercial vehicle sales were 548,000 units, reflecting a 2.3% y/y increase. The period from January through April has recorded a total of 1.918 million units and 1.956 million units for commercial vehicle production and sales volumes respectively, reflecting a y/y increase of 47.0% and 47.3%.
In April, NEV production reached 216,000 units, reflecting a 160% y/y increase, while sales reached 206,000 units, reflecting a 180% y/y increase. Among NEVs, BEV (battery electric vehicle) production was 182,000 units, reflecting a 210% y/y increase, while sales were 171,000 units, reflecting a 220% y/y increase. PHV (plug-in hybrid vehicle) production was 34,000 units, reflecting a 49.9% y/y increase, while sales were 35,000 units, reflecting a 70.8% y/y increase. FCV (fuel cell vehicle) production and sales were 36 units and 38 units respectively, down by 67.0% and 48.0% y/y respectively. For January, February, March and April in total, NEV production and sales volumes were 750,000 units and 732,000 units, up by 260% and 250% y/y respectively. China vehicle production and sales increase 71.6% and 74.9% respectively in March
On April 9, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for the month of March, 2021.
In March 2021, production and sales volumes of every vehicle type showed a significant year-over-year (y/y) increase, due to a low baseline in March 2020. Among commercial vehicles, production and sales volumes of heavy-duty trucks and light trucks set new records in terms of March results, as driven by factors such as the shift to China 6 emission standards and commencement of infrastructure projects. As a result, trucks and commercial vehicles both reached a record high with regard to production and sales volumes. When compared to historical data of 2019, passenger vehicle production and sales volumes declined in the first quarter of this year. The larger y/y drop may be related to the shortage in semiconductor supply. New energy vehicle (NEV) production, sales, and exports reached a record high for the month of March.
Overall vehicle production in March totaled 2.462 million units, reflecting a 71.6% y/y increase, while sales totaled 2.526 million units, reflecting a 74.9% y/y increase. Cumulative production and sales volumes of the period from January through March were 6.352 million units and 6.484 million units, up by 81.7% and 75.6% y/y respectively.

For January, February and March in total, NEV production and sales volumes were 533,000 units and 515,000 units, up by 320% and 280% y/y respectively.
