China vehicle production and sales both decrease 7.9% in November
On December 9, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for November 2022.
In November 2022, vehicle production and sales were somewhat sluggish, presenting poorer-than-expected overall performance with declines both month-over-month (m/m) and year-over-year (y/y). Specifically, passenger car production and sales fell y/y; commercial vehicle production and sales kept hovering at low levels; while New Energy Vehicle (NEV) production and sales as well as auto exports remained strong.
With downward pressure weighing on the economy and COVID-19 outbreaks hitting the auto consumer market, consumers’ demand for purchasing vehicles cooled down, bringing heavy pressure to the stable operation of the auto market. The CAAM believes that China’s auto industry is in a critical period of transformation and upgrade, and suggests that purchase tax incentives for conventional ICE vehicles and local consumption boosting policies be renewed in 2023 to promote industrial development.
Overall vehicle production and sales in November totaled 2.386 million units and 2.328 million units, both down 7.9% y/y. Cumulative production and sales volumes from January to November were 24.628 million units and 24.302 million units, up 6.1% and 3.3% y/y, respectively.
In November, passenger vehicle production reached 2.151 million units, down 3.9% y/y, while sales were 2.075 million units, down 5.6% y/y. Passenger vehicle production from January to November totaled 21.702 million units, up 14.7% y/y, while sales were 21.292 million units, up 11.5% y/y.

China vehicle production and sales increase 28.1% and 25.7%, respectively, in September
On October 11, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for the month of September, 2022.
In September 2022, vehicle production and sales presented rapid growth. Despite the off-season, high demand contributed to the market stability and recovery. Consumption boosting policies like purchase tax incentives had a continuous impact. Passenger vehicle sales had already returned to normal levels, presenting a trend of rapid growth. The commercial vehicle market wasn’t recovering as fast as expected. Nonetheless, China’s Ministry of Transport recently introduced a further 10% reduction in truck tolls (from 00:00 on October 1, 2022 to 24:00 on December 31, 2022), which had a positive effect on the development of road logistics and the recovery of the commercial vehicle market. New Energy Vehicle (NEV) production and sales delivered the best-ever performance again. China's Ministry of Finance and other ministries jointly issued a notice on the extension of NEV purchase tax exemption, which boosted the confidence of NEV makers. Vehicle exports also delivered strong performance this month.
CAAM predicts that vehicle production and sales will maintain rapid growth in Q4. Exports of NEVs and automobiles will continue to gain momentum. The auto market will achieve the goal of steady growth for the whole year.

China vehicle production and sales decline 46.1% and 47.6%, respectively, in April
On May 11, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for the month of April, 2022.

The industrial chain and supply chain of the auto industry experienced the most severe test in history. Some automakers suspended production, with the addition of great obstacles in logistics, which led to the slump in supply capacity. Owing to the COVID pandemic, there was a significant drop in consumer purchasing power and confidence. Steady growth in the auto industry remains an uphill task.
In April, vehicle production and sales reflected a significant year-over-year (y/y) drop, delivering the worst April performance in the past decade. Production and sales of both passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles slumped y/y. New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) were also affected by the pandemic, but still presented growth compared with the same period last year, demonstrating fine performance. This month witnessed a slight y/y drop in vehicle exports.
Overall vehicle production and sales in April totaled 1.205 million units and 1.181 million units, representing a 46.1% and 47.6% y/y decrease, respectively. China vehicle production and sales decline 9.1% and 11.7%, respectively, in March
On April 11, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for the month of March, 2022.
In March 2022, multiple COVID cases recently occurred in China, which resulted in a significant increase in the difficulties of market players. The smooth economic cycle encountered some constraints, along with the increased new downward pressure. In terms of auto supply, the chip shortage had not been significantly improved; the soaring costs of raw materials used in EV batteries further increased the manufacturing cost for enterprises; business activities of automakers were hampered; the overall situation fell short of expectations. In terms of auto consumption, the consumer driving forces were clearly insufficient, presenting a declining trend from a year earlier.
In the first quarter, vehicle production and sales reflected slight year-over-year (y/y) increase, but the growth rate dropped significantly compared with the same period of the previous year. Production and sales of passenger vehicles delivered a growth rate higher than that of the overall industry. Production and sales of commercial vehicles still presented a rapid decline y/y. New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) continued its rapid growth, with production and sales both exceeding 1 million units, accounting for a market share of 19.3%. The strategic leading role of NEVs became more obvious.
Overall vehicle production in March totaled 2.241 million units, reflecting a 9.1% y/y decrease, while sales totaled 2.234 million units, reflecting an 11.7% y/y decrease. Cumulative production and sales volumes of the period from January through March were 6.485 million units and 6.509 million units, up by 2.0% and 0.2% y/y, respectively.
In March, passenger vehicle production and sales reached 1.881 million units and 1.864 million units, representing a 0.1% and 0.6% y/y decline, respectively. Passenger vehicle production for the January to March period totaled 5.499 million units, up by 11.0% y/y, while sales were 5.545 million units, up by 9.0% y/y.
Among commercial vehicles, production in March totaled 360,000 units, reflecting a 38.0% y/y decrease. Commercial vehicle sales were 370,000 units, reflecting a 43.5% y/y decrease. The period from January through March has recorded a total of 985,000 units and 965,000 units for commercial vehicle production and sales volumes, respectively, reflecting a y/y decrease of 29.7% and 31.7%.
In March, NEV production and sales reached 465,000 units and 484,000 units respectively, both reflecting a 110% y/y increase. Among NEVs, BEV (battery electric vehicle) production and sales reached 376,000 units and 396,000 units respectively, both reflecting a 110% y/y increase. PHV (plug-in hybrid vehicle) production was 89,000 units, reflecting a 160% y/y increase, while sales were 88,000 units, reflecting a 140% y/y increase. FCV (fuel cell vehicle) production and sales were 500 units and 367 units respectively, up by 1010% and 520% y/y respectively.
For the period from January to March, NEV production and sales volumes were 1.293 million units and 1.257 million units, both up by 140% y/y. Among NEVs, BEV production and sales reached 1.036 million units and 1.007 million units, both reflecting a 130% y/y increase. PHV production and sales were 256,000 units and 249,000 units, up by 230% and 200% y/y, respectively. FCV production and sales reached 856 units and 738 units, up by 720% and 390% y/y, respectively.
Overall vehicle exports in March reached 170,000 units, reflecting a 28.8% y/y increase. Passenger vehicle exports totaled 121,000 units, reflecting a 21.8% y/y increase, while commercial vehicle exports totaled 49,000 units, reflecting a 49.8% y/y increase. Total exports of the January to March period were 582,000 units, reflecting a 58.3% y/y increase. Cumulative passenger vehicle exports were 452,000 units, up by 61.9% y/y, while cumulative commercial vehicle exports were 130,000 units, up by 47.2% y/y.

*There are cases where recently released data and detailed information in the database do not match up for reasons including different information sources, and discrepancies between preliminary reports and confirmed data.

China vehicle production and sales rise 20.6% and 18.7%, respectively, in February
On March 11, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for the month of February, 2022.
From January to February 2022, vehicle production and sales remained stable by and large, continuing to present year-over-year (y/y) growth, up by 10% compared with the same period in 2019. Production and sales of passenger vehicles both dropped month-over-month (m/m) but maintained a rapid y/y growth; while production and sales of commercial vehicles presented m/m and y/y declines, which was still sluggish. New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) still delivered an excellent performance this month, presenting a slight m/m decline and a rapid y/y growth. Vehicle exports also registered a decline compared with last month but maintained a y/y growth.
By looking at the automotive trend in Q1, the implementation of several policies and the start of large infrastructure projects in various places since the last quarter will play a significant role in boosting economic growth. Automakers keep accelerating the launches of new models, which may contribute to a steady growth in the auto market in Q1. Nonetheless, the external environment of the industry became more complex owing to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. At the same time, factors such as the chip shortage and the rising cost of raw materials affected the production and operation of companies, making it hard to stabilize prices.
Overall vehicle production in February totaled 1.813 million units, reflecting a 20.6% y/y increase, while sales totaled 1.737 million units, reflecting a 18.7% y/y increase. Cumulative production and sales volumes of the period from January through February were 4.235 million units and 4.268 million units, up by 8.8% and 7.5% y/y, respectively.
In February, passenger vehicle production and sales reached 1.534 million units and 1.487 million units, representing a 32.0% and 27.8% y/y growth, respectively. Passenger vehicle production for the January to February period totaled 3.612 million units, up by 17.6% y/y, while sales were 3.674 million units, up by 14.4% y/y.
Among commercial vehicles, production in February totaled 279,000 units, reflecting an 18.3% y/y decrease. Commercial vehicle sales were 250,000 units, reflecting a 16.6% y/y decrease. The period from January through February has recorded a total of 624,000 units and 594,000 units for commercial vehicle production and sales volumes, respectively, reflecting a y/y decrease of 24.0% and 21.7%.
In February, NEV production reached 368,000 units, reflecting a 200% y/y increase, while sales reached 334,000 units, reflecting a 180% y/y increase. Among NEVs, BEV (battery electric vehicle) production was 285,000 units, reflecting a 170% y/y increase, while sales were 258,000 units, reflecting a 160% y/y increase. PHV (plug-in hybrid vehicle) production was 83,000 units, reflecting a 410% y/y increase, while sales were 75,000 units, reflecting a 340% y/y increase. FCV (fuel cell vehicle) production and sales were 213 units and 178 units respectively, up by 750% and 540% y/y respectively.
For the period from January to February, NEV production and sales volumes were 820,000 units and 765,000 units, up by 160% and 150% y/y, respectively. Among NEVs, BEV production and sales reached 652,000 units and 604,000 units, both reflecting a 140% y/y increase. PHV production and sales were 168,000 units and 160,000 units, up by 280% and 250% y/y, respectively. FCV production and sales reached 356 units and 371 units, up by 500% and 310% y/y, respectively.

China vehicle production and sales rise 1.4% and 0.9%, respectively, in January
On February 18, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for the month of January, 2022.
By and large, vehicle production and sales remained stable in January 2022, presenting a slight year-over-year (y/y) growth. Supported by the continued slight improvement in chip supply, along with the addition of policies to encourage automobile consumption issued by some local authorities, the passenger vehicle segment delivered a better performance than the overall market, maintaining a steady y/y growth in its production and sales. Commercial vehicles segment suffered a significant y/y decline in its production and sales. Both NEVs (New Energy Vehicles) and vehicles delivered outstanding performances in export, maintaining relatively rapid y/y growths. The production and operation activity expectation index of the automobile industry in January was at a high level of over 60.0%, which served as the cornerstone for stabilizing industrial development.
Looking to the first quarter, positive factors are listed as follows: local authorities will issue policies concerning steady growth in a bid to facilitate stable market demand; Insufficient chip supply in the automotive industry is expected to further mitigate; and some passenger vehicle makers believe that market expectations are fine in 2022. Negative factors are listed as follows: the chip supply shortage still exists; the scattered cases of COVID-19 in China have also increased the risks in the industrial chain and supply chain; and the current policy dividends for commercial vehicles have been practically consumed.
Overall vehicle production in January totaled 2.422 million units, reflecting a 1.4% y/y increase, while sales totaled 2.531 million units, reflecting a 0.9% y/y increase.
In January, passenger vehicle production and sales reached 2.077 million units and 2.186 million units, up by 8.7% and 6.7% y/y, respectively.
Among commercial vehicles, production in January totaled 345,000 units, reflecting a 28.0% y/y decrease. Commercial vehicle sales were 344,000 units, reflecting a 25.0% y/y decrease.
In January, NEV production reached 452,000 units, reflecting a 130% y/y increase, while sales reached 431,000 units, reflecting a 140% y/y increase. Among NEVs, BEV (battery electric vehicle) production and sales reached 367,000 units and 346,000 units respectively, both reflecting a 120% y/y increase. PHV (plug-in hybrid vehicle) production and sales were both 85,000 units, both reflecting a 200% y/y increase. FCV (fuel cell vehicle) production and sales were 142 units and 192 units respectively, up by 390% and 200% y/y respectively.
Overall vehicle exports in January reached 231,000 units, reflecting an 87.7% y/y increase, representing the second highest monthly figure. Passenger vehicle exports totaled 185,000 units, reflecting a 94.5% y/y increase, while commercial vehicle exports totaled 46,000 units, reflecting a 64.8% y/y increase.
