UK passenger car sales increase 10.4% in March
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on April 4, UK passenger car sales increased 10.4% to 317,786 units in March 2024. It was best March since 2019 and 20th consecutive month of growth. Year-to-date sales increased 10.4% with 545,548 cars registered in the first 3 months of 2024.
March sales for VW increased 1.8% to 22,147 units (7.0% market share), Nissan sales increased 21% to 20,559 units (6.5% share) while BMW sales increased 38.7% to 20,065 units (6.3% share).
Mercedes-Benz sales increased 20.4% to 19,794 units (6.2% share), Kia sales decreased 6.2% to 18,478 units (5.8% share).
The best-selling cars in March 2023 were Nissan Qashqai (8,931 units), Ford Puma (8,318 units), Kia Sportage (7,445 units), Nissan Juke (7,346 units) and Audi A3 (6,010 units).
Compared to last March , gasoline-engine car sales increased 9.2% to 177,019 units (55.7% share), EV increased 3.8% to 48,388 units (15.2% share), HEV increased 19.6% to 44,550 units (14.0% share), PHEV increased 36.7% to 24,517 units (7.7% share), and diesel-engine car sales decreased 2.7% to 23,312 units (7.3% share). The biggest percentage growth was recorded by PHEVs.
In March, private car sales decreased 7.7% to 128,472 units (40.4% share), fleet sales increased 29.6% to 181,399 units (57.1% share), and businesses sales decreased 8% to 7,915 units (2.5% share). Overall increase driven by fleet investment with weak confidence constraining private retail demand.
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons increased 11.1% to 52,916 units, sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons increased 46% to 946 units while sales of taxis decreased 18.5% to 256 units in March.

UK passenger car sales increase 14% in February
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on March 5, UK passenger car sales increased 14% to 84,886 units in February 2024.
Year-to-date sales increased 10.3% with 227,762 cars registered in the first 2 months of 2024.
February sales for VW increased 13.3% to 7,724 units (9.1% market share), BMW sales increased 65.5% to 5,911 units (7.0% share) while Ford sales decreased 14.7% to 5,845 units (6.9% share). Audi sales increased 11.8% to 5,176 units (6.1% share), Vauxhall sales decreased 13.2% to 4,784 units (5.6% share).
The best-selling cars in February 2024 were Ford Puma (2,535 units), VW Golf (2,203 units), VW T-Roc (1,986 units), Kia Sportage (1,948 units) and Audi A3 (1,835 units).
Compared to last February, gasoline-engine car sales increased 13.3% to 48,001 units (56.6% share), EV increased 21.8% to 14,991 units (17.7% share), HEV increased 12.1% to 10,801 units (12.7% share), PHEV increased 29.1% to 6,098 units (7.2% share), and diesel-engine car sales decreased 7.4% to 4,995 units (5.9% share).
In February , private car sales decreased 2.6% to 28,630 units (33.7% share), fleet sales increased 25.2% to 54,740 units (64.5% share), and businesses sales increased 15.5% to 1,516 units (1.8% share).
In February, the UK new car market has recorded its best February performance for two decades as registrations. It was the 19th month of consecutive growth. Fleets and businesses were responsible for the entirety of February’s increase.
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons increased 2.2% to 17,934 units, sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons increased 53.4% to 523 units while sales of taxis increased 31% to 55 units in February.

UK passenger car sales increase 8.2% in January
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on February 5, UK passenger car sales increased 8.2% to 142,876 units in January 2024.
January sales for VW decreased 7.8% to 11,460 units (8.0% market share), BMW increased 38.2% to 10,795 units (7.6% market share), Kia sales increased 13.2% to 10,207 units (7.1% share) while Ford sales increased 5.9% to 9,696 units (6.8% share) and Audi sales decreased 2.2% to 8,832 units (6.2% share).
The best-selling cars in January 2024 were Kia Sportage (4,239 units), Ford Puma (4,201 units), Nissan Qashqai (4,008 units), MG HS (3,413 units) and BMW 1 Series (3,204 units).
Compared to last January , gasoline-engine car sales increased 7.5% to 81,905 units (57.3% share), EV increased 21% to 20,935 units (14.7% share), HEV decreased 1.2% to 18,744 units (13.1% share), PHEV increased 31.1% to 11,944 units (8.4% share), and diesel-engine car sales decreased 10.1% to 9,348 units (6.5% share).
In January, private car sales decreased 15.8% to 50,244 units (35.2% share), fleet sales increased 29.9% to 90,314 units (63.2% share), and businesses sales decreased 17.7% to 2,318 units (1.6% share).
Sales of all vans to 3.5 tons increased 8.4% to 23,962 units, sales of trucks between 3.5 and 6.0 tons increased 103.5% to 521 units while sales of taxis decreased 28.5% to 103 units in January.
January 2024 saw the best performance for the month since 2020 and the 18th consecutive month of growth. The increase was driven entirely by the fleet market, which rose by 29.9%.
The latest 2024 outlook for the new car market estimates a total overall volume of 1.974 million units, which is a 4,000 unit increase on the October estimate, but with the BEV forecast reduced to a market share of 21.0% over the year compared with 22.3% anticipated in October.
