Mexican vehicle sales increase 16.0% in December, increase 24.4% for full-year 2023
On January 4, Mexico’s Institito Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI) reported sales of 142,959 light vehicles in December 2023, representing a 16.0% increase from the 122,787 sales in December 2022.
In 2023, Mexican light vehicle sales increased 24.4% to 1,361,433 unites.
In 2023, Nissan sold 241,056 units, a increase of 42.7% from the previous year.
General Motors sales of 184,051 units in 2023 had increased 11.5% from 2022.
Volkswagen Group sold 149,936 units, an increase of 37.4%, and Toyota sales of 104,113 units in 2023 increased 8.0% from the last year.
Stellantis sales increased 30.1% to 96,795 units in 2023 while Kia sold 93,490 units, an increase of 4.9% from the last year.
Mazda sold 76,017 units, an increase of 57.5% from the last year and MG sales of 60,128 units in 2023 increased 25.0% from the last year.
Hyundai sales increased 20.3% to 49,757 units in 2023 while Ford Motor sold 47,968 units, an increase of 16.0% from the last year.
Chery sales were up 343.9% to 38,484 vehicles.
As of December 13, Scotiabank expected 1.39 million annual auto sales in 2024 and 1.43 million annual auto sales in 2025.

Mexican vehicle sales up 31.9% in November
On December 3, Mexico’s Institito Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI) reported sales of 128,961 light vehicles in November, representing a 31.9% increase from the 97,368 sales in November 2022.
Nissan sold 22,185 units in November, an increase of 55.8% from the previous year.
Overall Volkswagen Group sales of 14,891 units in November increased 177.5% from the same month in 2022.
General Motors sold 16,690 units, an increase of 15.1% from last year.
Ford sold 4,699 units in November, an increase of 19.4% from 2022, while Stellantis sales increased 19.3% to 8,146 units in November.
Toyota sold 10,265 units, an increase of 9.5%, while Honda sold 4,962 units, an increase of 39.7%, and Mazda sold 8,607 units, and increase of 108.8% from the same month last year.
Kia sales increased 2.8% to 8,020 units, while Hyundai sales increased 22.5% to 4,858 units.
JAC sold 2,100 vehicles, a 38.3% increase from last November.
Chery and Omoda brands sold 3,115 units, while Motornation sold 1,035 units of BAIC, Changan, and JMC vehicles.
Cumulative sales for the eleven months of the year were up 25.5% y/y to 1,218,474 units.
As of November 8, Scotiabank expected 1.35 million annual auto sales in 2023 and 1.39 million annual auto sales in 2024.

Mexican vehicle sales up 22.8% in October
On November 3, Mexico’s Institito Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI) reported sales of 113,672 light vehicles in October, representing an 22.8% increase from the 92,596  sales in October 2022.
Nissan sold 19,147 units in October, an increase of 76.2% from the previous year.
Overall Volkswagen Group sales of 13,670 units in October increased 103.2% from the same month in 2022.
General Motors sold 16,341 units, an increase of 21.9% from last year.
Ford sold 4,074 units in October, an increase of 15.7% from 2022, while Stellantis Group sales decreased 27.4% to 5,999 units in October.
Toyota sold 9,182 units, an increase of 25.5%, while Honda sold 4,487 units, an increase of 9.1%, and Mazda sold 6,968 units, and increase of 23.9% from the same month last year.
Kia sales increased 2.7% to 7,606 units, while Hyundai sales increased 12.8% to 4,451 units.
JAC sold 2,024 vehicles, a 25.5% increase from last October.
Chery and Omoda brands sold 2,547 units, while Motornation sold 800 units of BAIC, Changan, and JMC vehicles.
Scotiabank maintained its September 11 forecast for Mexico at 1.16 million units for the full year 2023 and 1.23 million units for 2024, as of October 17.

Mexican vehicle sales jump 35.6% in September
On October 4, Mexico’s Institito Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI) reported sales of 118,038 light vehicles in September, representing an 35.6% increase from the 87,051 sales in September 2022.
Nissan sold 20,146 units in September, an increase of 86.4% from the previous year.
Overall Volkswagen Group sales of 13,000 units in September increased 81.2% from the same month in 2022, with the VW brand selling 10,074 units, Audi selling 1,249 units, SEAT selling 1,514 units and Bentley selling 2.
General Motors sold 16,132 units, an increase of 13.7% from last year.
Ford sold 4,445 units in September, an increase of 38.0% from 2022, while Stellantis sales increased 38.4% to 8,483 units in September.
Toyota sold 8,746 units, an increase of 73.3%, and Honda sold 4,047 units, an increase of 24.9% from the same month last year.
Kia sales increased 4.9% to 7,770 units, while Hyundai sales increased 38.8% to 4,655 units.
JAC sold 1,703 vehicles, a 19.1% increase from last September.
Chery sold 3,687 units, while Motornation sold 782 units of BAIC, Changan, and JMC vehicles.
As of September 11, Scotiabank anticipates that full-year Mexican sales will be 1.16 million units in 2023 and 1.23 million units in 2024, respectively.

Mexican vehicle sales up 23.8% in August
On September 5, Mexico’s Institito Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI) reported sales of 113,873 light vehicles in August, representing a 23.8% increase from the 91,988 sales in August 2022.
General Motors sold 16,356 units in August, an increase of 17.2% from the previous year.
Volkswagen Group sales of 12,857 units in August had increased 40.6% from the same month in 2022.
Ford sold 4,107 units, an increase of 14.8%, and Stellantis sold 7,826 units, a increase of 12.4%.
Nissan sales of 21,182 units in August increased 61.9% from the same month last year.
Toyota sales increased 18.8% to 7,723 units, while Mazda sales increased 7.6% to 5,532 units in August.
Honda sold 2,790 units, a decrease of 31.6% from the same month in 2022.
Kia sold 7,915 units in August, an increase of 6.7% from 2022, while Hyundai sales increased 22.8% to 4,596 units.
JAC sold 1,453 vehicles, a 1.9% increase from a year ago in August.
Chery sold 3,771 units, while Motornation sold 850 units of BAIC, Changan, and JMC vehicles.
Scotiabank anticipates that full-year Mexican sales will be 1.16 million units in 2023 and 1.23 million units in 2024, respectively.

Mexican vehicle sales jump 32.6% in July
On August 2, Mexico’s Institito Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI) reported sales of 110,843 light vehicles in July, representing a 32.6% increase from the 83,598 sales in July 2022.
General Motors sold 15,992 units in July, an increase of 16.3% from the previous year.
Volkswagen Group sales of 11,483 units in July had increased 10.6% from the same month in 2022.
Ford sold 4,052 units, an increase of 11.2%, and Stellantis sold 6,899 units, an increase of 38.2%.
Nissan sales of 18,614 units in July increased 98.4% from the same month last year.
Toyota sales increased 44.6% to 9,726 units, while Mazda sales increased 46.5% to 6,286 units in July.
Honda sold 3,014 units, a decrease of 3.9% from the same month in 2022.
Kia sold 7,707 units in July, an increase of 4.0% from 2022, while Hyundai sales increased 19.4% to 3,735 units.
JAC sold 1,621 vehicles, a 22.4% increase from a year ago in July.
Guillermo Rosales, president of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA), pointed out: "The situation is positive: we are seeing a recovery in the supply to the distribution networks and the demand has proven to be resistant to inflation and high rates of interest".

Mexican vehicle sales rise 25.7% in June
On July 4, Mexico’s Institito Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI) reported sales of 113,553 light vehicles in June, representing a 25.7% increase from 90,368 sales in June 2022.
General Motors sold 15,405 units in June, an increase of 21.2% from the previous year.
Volkswagen Group sales of 11,937 units in June increased 1.2% from the same month in 2022.
Ford sold 4,414 units, an increase of 25.9%, and Stellantis sold 8,545 units, an increase of 19.2%. Renault sold 4,542 units, an increase of 85.4%.
Nissan sales of 21,011 units in June increased 50.3% from the same month last year.
Toyota sales increased 30.7% to 9,208 units, while Mazda sales increased 123.4% to 5,539 units in June.
Honda sold 2,152 units, a decrease of 31.9% from the same month last year.
Kia sold 8,005 units in June, an increase of 8.1% from 2022, while Hyundai sales increased 25.9% to 4,117 units.
MG Motor sales increased 2.8% to 4,121 units.
Chery sold 3,665 units, and JAC sold 1,544 vehicles, a 22.4% increase from last June.
Guillermo Rosales, president of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA), assured that the balance of the first half of the year is "favorable: the supply to the distributor networks is recovered and the demand capacity has shown resilience in the face of the inflation and high interest rates.

Mexican vehicle sales rise 17.1% in May

On June 2, Mexico’s Institito Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI) reported sales of 106,798 light vehicles in May, representing a 17.1% increase from the 91,215 sales in May 2022.
General Motors sold 13,647 units in May, an increase of 11.1% from the previous year.
Volkswagen Group sales of 11,592 units in May had increased 3.8% from the same month in 2022.
Ford sold 3,736 units, an increase of 15.5%, and Stellantis sold 6,997 units, an increase of 36.6%.
Nissan sales of 20,045 units in May increased 42.2% from the same month last year.
Toyota sales decreased 18.3% to 8,334 units, while Mazda sales increased 178.1% to 5,945 units in May.
Honda sold 2,177 units, a decrease of 30.5% from the same month last year.
Kia sold 7,803 units in May, an increase of 5.3% from 2022, while Hyundai sales increased 17.3% to 3,916 units.
MG Motor sales increased 15.0% to 5,002 units and JAC sold 1,537 vehicles, a 22.2% increase from last May.
"This level of sales is higher than sales in the same month of 2019, standing 0.3% above the 102,422 units sold then," Guillermo Rosales, president of AMDA said.
"The positive results for May continue to reflect an improvement in the level of inventory and a better performance in the various brands in the market," Rosales added.

Mexican vehicle sales climb 17.0% in April
On May 4, Mexico’s Institito Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI) reported sales of 97,610 light vehicles in April, representing a 17.0% increase from the 83,459 sales in April 2022.
General Motors sold 14,629 units in April, an increase of 6.3% from the previous year.
Ford sold 3,164 units, an increase of 14.5%, and Stellantis sold 8,030 units, an increase of 44.8%.
Volkswagen Group sales of 11,628 units in April had increased 25.8% from the same month in 2022.
Nissan sales of 15,025 units in April increased 10.9% from the same month last year.
Toyota sales decreased 23.7% to 7,233 units, while Mazda sales increased 608.6% to 3,777 units in April.
Honda sold 1,623 units, a decrease of 26.4% from the same month last year.
Kia sold 7,610 units in April, an increase of 8.7% from 2022, while Hyundai sales increased 7.9% to 3,436 units.
JAC sold 1,764 vehicles, an increase of 44.6% from last year.
Chery sold 2,929 vehicles in April, while Motornation sold 542 units of BAIC, Changan, and JMC brand vehicles.
The sales volume is the highest since April 2020, when economic activity in Mexico and the world was closed due to the pandemic. “The positive results for the month of April continue to reflect improved inventory levels and better performance in the different brands in the market,” said Guillermo Rosales, president of AMDA.

Mexican vehicle sales jump 24.8% in March
On April 4, Mexico’s Institito Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI) reported sales of 118,801 light vehicles in March, representing a 24.8% increase from the same month in 2022.
General Motors sold 15,387 units in March, an increase of 11.5% from the previous year.
Volkswagen Group sales of 11,980 units in March increased 20.0% from the same month in 2022.
Ford sold 3,177 units, an increase of 3.1%, and Stellantis sold 10,150 units, an increase of 28.5%.
Nissan sales of 22,623 units in March increased 34.7% from the same month last year.
Toyota sold 7,231 units, a decrease of 15.9% from March 2022.
Honda sold 3,274 units, a decrease of 24.5% from the same month last year, while Mazda sales increased 83.2% to 7,105 units.
Kia sold 8,301 units in March, an increase of 1.8% from 2022, while Hyundai sales increased 4.7% to 3,591 units.
With local production at Giant Motors, JAC sold 1,713 units in March, a 51.3% increase from the previous year.
Scotiabank expects that the US economic performance will play a key role in Mexican growth and is likely to be a challenge for the Mexican economy. About two-thirds of the Mexican recovery from the 2020 pandemic low is accounted for by exports to the US, which is now broadly expected to fall into a technical recession in 2023. As expected, Mexico's central bank raised interest rates to 11% in February 2023.

Mexican vehicle sales up 28.0% in February

On March 2, Mexico’s Institito Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI) reported 101,911 light vehicles sold in February, representing a 28.0% increase from the same month in 2022.
The sales figure in February 2023 is the third time the level of 1000,000 units per month has been exceeded in the last 36 months. In the last 36 months (from March 2020 to February 2023), monthly vehicle sales exceeded 100,000 units only three times: December 2020 with 105,135 units, December 2022 with 120,862 units, and February 2023.
General Motors sold 13,376 units in February, an increase of 9.2% from the previous year.
Volkswagen Group sales of 11,475 units in February had increased 29.2% from the same month in 2022.
Ford sold 3,047 units, a decrease of 3.2%, and Stellantis sold 8,179 units, an increase of 124.3%.
Nissan sales of 19,417 units in February increased 28.1% from the same month last year.
Toyota sold 7,270 units, an increase of 10.6% from February 2022.
Honda sold 2,347 units, an increase of 23.8% from the same month last year, while Mazda sales increased 39.0% to 5,568 units.
Kia sold 7,341 units in February, an increase of 4.6% from 2022, while Hyundai sales increased 1.0% to 3,918 units.
With local production at Giant Motors, JAC sold 1,502 units in February, a 38.4% increase from the previous year. MG sales increased 51.2% to 4,602 units.
Scotiabank expects that the US economic performance will play a key role in Mexican growth and is likely to be a challenge for the Mexican economy. About two-thirds of the Mexican recovery from the 2020 pandemic low is accounted for by exports to the US, which is now broadly expected to fall into a technical recession in 2023. The bank also anticipates that Banxico’s overnight rate will rise to 11% in 2023.

Mexican vehicle sales up 20.1% in January
On February 2, Mexico’s Institito Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI) reported sales of 94,414 light vehicles in January 2023, representing a 20.1% increase from the same month in 2022.
General Motors sold 10,422 units in January, a decrease of 10.3% from the previous year.
Volkswagen Group sales of 10,291 units in January had increased 28.8% from the same month in 2022.
Ford sold 3,357 units, an increase of 1.0%, and Stellantis sold 5,555 units, an increase of 89.7%.
Nissan sales of 17,147 units in January increased 22.3% from the same month last year.
Toyota sold 8,356 units, a decrease of 2.1% from 2022, and Honda sold 3,177 units, a decrease of 5.1% from January 2022. Mazda sales increased by 89.7% compared to January 2022 to 6,591 units.
Kia sold 7,505 units in January, an increase of 2.0% from 2022, while Hyundai sales increased 16.9% to 3,273 units.
JAC sold 1,706 units in Mexico in January, 57.5% more than the same month in 2022.
